This is NOT a museum of The Overland Trail! I drove 200+ miles to go out there, to find only one reproduction of an 1860s map on the wall that is out of focus. Much better maps can be found on line. They think the Overland Trail may have passed in front of the museum building. Thats it. Nothing else about The Overland Trail. It is a very nice museum featuring unusual farm implements of the 1880-1930s era, as well as various buildings from the same era which have been relocated to the grounds. The exhibits are typically donations from the community featuring the same era, and also a selection of arrowheads which have been found locally. Its a nice museum of early Sterling, but certainly NOT a museum where you can study The Overland Trail.

Coolest place in Sterling. If you are history buff this place is a must stop. They have several different building/structures to walk through and see what life was like during that time period. Black Smith shop, saddlery, soda shop, gas station and even an old caboose railcar. The admission prices were reasonable and staff was friendly and helpful. Located right off i25.

Amazing regional museum in Sterling. The exhibits are beautifully organized and curated. The buildings on the grounds give a wonderful glimpse into every day life on the Plains. Its not difficult to imagine different times and the people who inhabited them through the excellent work of this museum. Thank you for a fascinating visit!

This museum which is much larger, more detailed and in general, far more extensive than most people realize pays tribute to the wild history of Far Northeastern Colorado and the immigrants that settled it over a Century ago. If you are headed back to or from the Midwest or are a Colorado Native and if you are keen on American history and the history of the Wild West, then please pay this jewel of a museum a visit. You’ll be impressed.

I enjoyed this museum tremendously. The layout of the museum worked well. As I explored I had many questions that were almost immediately answered by their exhibits and well placed information. The staff was willing to answer any further questions I had and were clearly enthusiastic about the subject. I learned a great deal about Eastern Colorado and rural America that I didnt know before which is exactly what a museum should do.There were a great many artifacts but, I think, some of them might have only been there because it was donated by a prominent local citizen rather than its particular significance. Also, I would have liked to see more about Native American presence in the area prior to Western settlement. However, the presentation of the changing nature of the area (20th century oil boom, the Rural Electrification Act, and others) was extremely interesting. The grounds were pristine and the structures that were there were like time capsules to a variety of areas. This museum is clearly a source of pride for the community and is well-worth the effort to visit if you are passing through or as your specific destination.

Feels like time travel into not too far historical era. The museum grows on me slowly and gets interesting. The old school and fuel station show how things were done then. We spent more time than i thought we would.

Itd be hard to over-state the quality and value we found at the Overland Trail Museum. Their displays cover a lot of ground - everything from dinosaurs to WWI to the expansion of electrical lines to rural populations... so, so cool.We went with three hours and figured thatd be enough time, we could repeat the visit and maybe then well be able to see everything. They have an array of old buildings to tour so you can walk through history - tanning, an old fuel station, storefront and more...Polite and informative staff - inexpensive entry fee. Worth every penny, plus a healthy donation.

I highly recommend this place. The admission fee was $11.50 for our family. It has a lot of local history on display from the Native Americans to present day. I visited once 13 years ago and all of the changes and additions that have occurred since then are incredible and really add to the historical value of the museum. My kids in particular loved this place. The two- headed cow was just mesmerising for them. They also were stoked they could get souvenirs that ranged from for $1-$3. Once outside of the museum, there are some incredible finds. The barns and buildings are filled with unique pieces-- like a large collection of branding irons, a antique go-cart, farm equipment, the barbwire display and of course, the two-headed cow. The museum is easily accessible from the highway and is very close to the Holiday Inn and Best Western hotels. The only part we struggled with is the wheelchair accessibility of the museum. It is an old building and lots of stairs. There were ramps on the outside to avoid the stairs and there was a lift to access the new building but the accessiblity was definitely complicated. Naturally all the old buildings outside, the church barbershop, general store, home, etc. had really small doorways for a wheelchair. That is to be expected with old buildings. There was paved sidewalk to all the buildings outside except to the railroad car. There was only gravel and dirt to the railroad car. This place was cool and definitely worth a look when in the area.

Great display of local, state and national history; appreciated the diversity of items and the stories that went with them. There was a big crowd today for July 4th and while the museum could have enjoyed a boom in ticket sales, it was free to the public -- with lots of special activities to mark the day. I left with a new appreciation for rural and pioneer life on the Plains and saw first hand the community spirit that endures today.

This is a fabulous museum! There are artifacts and exhibits covering prehistory through contemporary times. Many items and artifacts were found locally (ie large collection of stone arrowheads) or donated by local families that show life on the prairie from homeateading times, through the various economic booms and busts. There are 17 buildings and many exhibits throughout.Cost is now only $3 per adult and well worth it at much more for the enjoyment, education, and entertainment.

We really, really loved this place. 2 adults and 3 kids 6 and under. It costs a little bit of money now and its not ftee...but it was worth it. Lots of historic buildings and my little bit lived the old time gas station and gas pumps the best. The interactive museum in the back was also fun. I will definitely recommend, especially over the Pioneer Village in Minden, NE. This is comparative too that but way better.
