Great museum with a lot of hidden gems. UW parking is $4 per hour. Free Thursday museum entrance with online reservations. There are 2 parking lot pay stations the other pay station is hidden behind a tree near the entrance. Very busy the day that we went but we still had a great time. 3 levels of things to explore. Dinosaur is on the top floor which was the most crowded.

I felt a little nostalgic entering the museum knowing that it’s going to be replaced with a brand new building next door in 2019. It’s a compact collection but a nice cross section between evolutionary and geological history as well as exhibitions on humans - who are we?! It’s also a great place to remind you of the intrigue, fascination and excitement of children as they run around with their parents

This museum is a real beaut. Many deeply interesting exhibits, densely and logically organized. I won’t say that the museum is not interesting because it is BUT is quite outdated and the displays look old.The lighting is terrible and doesn’t give justice to the pieces. The museography is poor and the explanatory charts not quite interesting. It is great to see people cleaning the pieces and the conservators doing their job, no doubt..but a museum needs way more than that. This building will be gone by early 2019 and the new one, next to it will open. Hopefully it will improve the whole concept. In the 21st century museums need to be way more inviting.

Great museum with a very responsible attitude towards its artifacts--many things have been returned to the tribes they belong to, and some have been loaned back, but others have been replaced with something commemorating the original item or replicas, with information about the original items/the repatriation of the originals.I liked that this museum covers things native to the Pacific Northwest, and also things from around the Pacific, from New Zealand to Vietnam to Japan. I also really liked the cards scattered throughout that teach how to pronounce native words and how Pacific Islanders navigated.Next time I plan to explore the upstairs section on natural history.

The Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture was founded in 1885. It is the oldest public museum in Washington state and was designated the State Museum in 1899. Its administration resides with the University of Washington College of Arts & Sciences. The Burke recognizes that the museum sits on the ancestral land of the Native peoples of Washington state. The Burke holds deep respect for Indigenous knowledge, and is dedicated to collaborating with diverse Native populations, sharing collections and learning together. The Burke is a research- and collections-based museum that serves many audiences and communities, including Washington state residents, tourists and visitors to Seattle, educators and students, Indigenous and Pacific communities, and researchers, scholars, and enthusiasts. The 16 million objects (and counting!) in the Burke collections are used in many ways,

A new building is under construction to relocate the museum, so I was a little confused about where to go for the current exhibits; signage wasn’t very clear to me. I attended the museum on the first Thursday with free admission and was glad I didn’t pay. It’s clear that this is a museum on a university campus, because there was nothing that blew me away. Perhaps it is a more engaging place if you come with children.

Review №32

Agree with others, very underwhelming for a musuem from a major university in a large city. The price of admission was too high for the quality and quantity of exhibits presented. Understanding that the price helps to fund the continued research, but cant that be offset by the universitys endowment or revenue from their athletic programs? Did not see a mineral and geology exhibit that was in the old building. The building layout with the long passageway in the middle makes it feel cramp. The old building had a better flow plan. Parking was adequate given the high traffic location. Take advantage of the free first Thursday to lessen the dissatisfaction you will feel if paying the regular admission cost.

We had a great time here. Its a small museum, but one of the most interesting in Seattle. Lots of native history and artifacts. We really enjoyed the dinosaurs and fossils. We spent around 2 hours here. Admission is reasonable ($10 for adults) and you can get a discount of $2 if you are a AAA member, but hurry up because the museum will be closed from January to October 2019 to move into their new building next door. Due to the hype around the opening of the new Burke Museum I was so excited to see both new architecture of the building and how the collections would be displayed and showcased. Unfortunately I was underwhelmed with the entire experience. The siting of the new Burke Museum is actually quite good, and the best feature is part of the cafe where the giant awning window wall that can pivot outward by an enormous counterbalance atop the wall. Hopefully once the landscaping is completed the exterior experience of the museum will be pleasant and enjoyable. The Interiors of the building felt basic almost like a version of a big box store but for a museum. Also the curation of Museum feels amateurish and the displays uninspiring and benign, at least to this adult, while the only engaging moments was when you could talk directly with an employee who was displaying some species.

It will be wonderful when this opens back up into a larger space because thats my main complaint. They only have 1% of their collection currently displayed in the small space they have. I love the focus on the Pacific Northwest many of their displays have. The Tyrannosaurus theyre working on in front of the public which is so cool to see the process theyre using to excavate it out of its stone matrix. The Burke is one of the museums that participates on free museum days on the first Thursday of the month.Compared to other museums around town this one seems relatively small. Despite that the museum packs plenty of fascinating and useful information! The museum seems like something like a couple of Anthropology courses with a hint of Geology. Downstairs contains various cultural displays. The various displays do not focus on one culture but a variety of them. There are artifacts belonging to Northwest Native American tribes, Latino cultures, European and Asian. Really a little bit of everything. It is fascinating!Upstairs there is more the physical Anthropology, Archeology and Geology part of the museum. There are various fossils from plants, crustaceans and dinosaur remains here. They even have a display with artifacts during the Ice Age.One room covers volcano information and how they work. There is also a chart of all of the volcanoes along the West Coast in which they chart and estimate the frequency of eruptions each one has had.Of course there are mammal display cases too! In the front lobby there was a little display with a porcupine and other unusual mammals where you could touch them too see how they feel. It was their skin or they were mounted. They were not alive. The Burke was a fun visit and those free museum visits should be taken advantage of!

Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture is a great option when you want an indoor activity. Plan for an hour, tops. I was lucky enough to go on Fossil Friday and got to see behind the scenes of the paleontology lab to get up close and personal with some of the fossils. The staff is excellent and the exhibits are well cared for. Its $10 for adults, so I dont know if the entertainment/education value is really worth it at this location. At the time Im writing this, they seemed to be moving some of the exhibit pieces to the new bigger location, which will open in Fall of 2019. Im really looking forward to seeing what they come up with. It seemed as though part of the new focus is on career development for young (and older) people, which I applaud.

I cant wait to review the new building. But for now, the existing museum is a good example of world history with a hyper-local lens. There is an open area where families can watch scientists work on artifacts, and great anthropological exhibits downstairs. There are also games and programs for all ages.
