This company puts on amazing productions with a very talented cast, production crew, and management. Its a small house of ~250 seats so theres really no bad seats. I personally enjoy the first 2 rows of the Balcony more than the Orchestra. Ive watched SF Playhouse grow tremendously over the past 2 decades and they are one of the best in the area.

The theater itself is just stunning. It is all art deco and looks like a theater from the 40s. It is so well maintained. If you are ever in LA, catch a play. Check their website for seating, but they do sometimes have seats at curtain time.

Saw Groundhog Day: The Musical on January 17th 2020. Wonderful performance. So full of energy and the show has great live music. Impressed with the quality. Very unusual theater located in a hotel. Never seen that before. Staying at the Westin St. Francis so it took all of 2 minutes to get back after the show.

Welcome to the empathy gym! Thats SF Playhouses mission. The company prides itself on being a place where you can sit in the dark with an audience and witness a part of other peoples lives. For a couple of hours, you have the chance to feel what others are feeling, and are changed as a result. Thats the power of theatre.SF Playhouse produces shows that engender empathy. You feel for the characters and their struggles. Its not always serious, mind you. The comedies and musicals are just as entertaining and thoughtful as the dramas. The Playhouse produces classic shows like Sunday in the Park with George, and brand new works through its Sandbox Series. Theyre all excellent.Do yourself a favor and check out the Playhouses current and upcoming shows. Youll be glad you gave your empathy muscles a workout.

Lovely theater--perfect size for an intimate performance. The theatre staff were so kind and helpful. We saw Cabaret. I write this in hopes that greater attention is payed to productions in this space.I brought teens with me that are by no means prudish. But I was embarrassed for the cast. I feel that explicit sexual representations took priority over choreography. The dancing lacked. The set didnt work at all and the actors didnt connect at all. Staging and lighting was amature. Its a lovely space that could have easily been transformed. Many opportunities to further the storyline and power of the musical were lost. Im hopeful my next visit will be better. Keep going.

From a satire of corporate myopia (think Lululemon) to women in the workplace to cultural heritage to self actualization, this play gets us to laugh and laugh... and see life from another angle. The plays that I have attended have been some of the most beautiful, hilarious and amazing performances that I have seen to date. The sets are a marvel, and it has that old-time theater feel. Intimate and, as always, engaging window into life, relationships, struggles. This time, King of the Yees had a family feel, providing a Chinatown drama that touched both the audience and, as revealed in the post-play chat, the talented actors themselves.

Amazing experience! I took my 12 year old daughter to see She Loves Me on Friday night at SF Playhouse... We both LOVED it! The quaint theater was beautiful. The actors were fantastic. We also loved seeing the 4 piece band up on the balcony level. It was a terrific end to a Mom and Daughter day (and night) in the City.Well definitely be back for another production.

I loved our experience there! First, the architecture of the building and the inside art is fabulous, a treat rare to find in San Francisco. The environment was very welcoming and organized, it doesnt give the feeling of going someplace crowded. The drinks were nice but just a bit pricey. The great bonus is that you can take your food and and drinks into the auditorium.

A comfortable smaller venue seating, maybe, 200 people. The theater has a lobby and front bar that sells drinks and small snacks before the show and during intermission. The theater is located in the same building as the Kensington Park Hotel and is on the second floor. Fun to go to the theater in this old cool building. It used to be an Elks Lodge and now is a hotel and theater. The crowd was dress VERY casually. My parents had season tickets to the theater (not this one) and Im used to getting a little dressed up to go to a play or performance. I was surprised that people we wearing jeans on a Friday night and to the theater. I understand people are more casual now (I am a fifth generation Californian) but I think it makes it more fun to get dressed up and shows you have respect for the performers that you value their work by dressing up to see it.

I had a very enjoyable experience watching The Christmas Story musical here this winter. Im going to make a point of seeing plays in this local playhouse more often. The location is on the second floor of a hotel right near Union square. There is a small lobby with bar service and a coat check service (with a suggested $5 donation). The theatre itself is very intimate with minimal sloping between rows. The seats are tight and uncomfortable, but offers a great way to chat with your neighbors. The performances are spectacular! Surprisingly good for a theatre of this size. The Christmas Story was very well performed and I was especially surprised by the talent of the child actors.

I have seen more plays in my lifetime than I am able to count, in multiple cities and on multiple continents, such as in New York City and London. I left halfway through City of Angels. I have seen some not so great plays before but nothing that warranted leaving. This play, those actors, the set, the playhouse were the most atrocious things I have ever had to witness. The acting was stilted, the set malfunctioned, the casting was horrendous (don’t cast a character who is described in the script as a long legged bombshell with a short toad of a human). For your sake, save your money. It’s been over a year since I have seen this swill and I’m still angry I spent money at this dumpster fire of a company.

I went here with my wife to see The Nether and I have to say that since I moved to US from Europe 3 years ago, this was the best play I had seen. I am not much of a theater goer, but I do go 2-3 times a year and I did do that in Europe, Russia/Ukraine mostly. This was the first play that was on par with best of Moscow performances I had seen. It was modern, captivating, deep, well casted. Some things with acting and overall cadence could have been improved, but overall, this was very good and I am glad such places exist.

Thank god our guests didnt realize the end of he first act WASNT the end. It allowed us to leave and not be put through any more of that dreck. No character depth, you dont care about the characters and just lazy writing all around. DO NOT SPEND YOUR MONEY ON THIS.
