Both the ship and the sub are cool. I’ve been in both but at separate times so I can’t tell you which is better. The Jeremiah O’Brien definitely has more to it and is much cooler then the sub for its historic value. The sub is unique because you can walk inside it and view every room (some are through glass and you can’t go inside). Whatever one you do, or if you do both, I assure you that you won’t be disappointed!

Compared to the Pampanito (submarine) next door, the ticket price here definitely was worth the length of the tour. However, the entire heritage site was really badly managed. It was peak tourist time when renovation and painting would continue on, the kitchen was actually making hot dogs for some private events, and the ship lacked a lot of explanation boards that describe what you are seeing. Essentially, you walk onto a historical boat without any explanation or history and somehow need to make sense of it all, all while your illusion broken by people fixing and renovating the boat. There are definitely jewels of the tour. The engine room is unique, theres a great WW2 museum in the lower level, etc. However, the entire presentation looked liked a junkyard. Visitors simply cannot get in the illusion that they were roaming around a WW2 ship. Also it wouldve been amazing to know exactly what role this particular ship played in D-Day at Normandy.Somehow all the presentation coming together felt badly managed and presented. A lost opportunity I would say. Wont probably return even with tourists visiting from out of town.

We had gone on a San Francisco bay cruise (highly recommended) and saw this ship docked at pier 45. It is a fully restored WWII merchant marine ship. I looked up the history of the ship and decided we had to see it. My father served in the Army Air Corps and spent 4 years in England during the war. He told stories of sailing on a ship like this. This ship was rescued from the moth ball fleet and fully restored to sea worthy condition. It even made the trip back to Normandy for the recent anniversary. You can explore the ship on a self guided tour.It is a trip back in time. This ship was built in 1943 and looks like it did when in active duty. I was impressed and amazed. Its probably not for little kids. For us big kids there is metal stair and ladder climbing to see everything . There is a museum on board which was very well done. This ship is a national treasure. Its well worth the price of admission.

A must see experience in San Francisco. The story of the ship and simply being on this vessel is an incredible experience. The volunteers are absolutely awesome people, and they were delighted to fill me in on anything that came up. Make sure to check out the engine room and the crew quarters...and everything. See everything. Great for anyone interested in history.

Amazing old World War 2 ship, got a whole history lesson from a veteran of the war himself, James. He’s 92 and volunteers his time to teach people about the history of the boat and he knows his stuff. What an incredible man. Got to walk around the entire ship myself and see some really cool stuff, even the engine room which I’m pretty sure I wasn’t supposed to be in I got into some places that seemed pretty closed off (my fault) still was an incredible day haha

The history that is contained in the ship is amazing. Definitely worth your time to reflect on not only the ship but the WWII era. The sacrifices that went into making these ships was incredible. Ideal for all ages, but make sure to keep the little ones close to you in the engine room. There are some steep stairs and narrow passages that may not be suitable for everyone, but there is plenty to see and reflect upon.

Really cool! This was a really unique opportunity to explore an old WW2 boat, almost fully restored and still running! $20 per adult, there is a full, very informative museum on board, and you get to roam over quite a few of the decks, including into the engine room. Very cool experience and very worth it.

A rare view: the famous liberty-ship. And in very good condition thanks to motivated and passionate volunteers. Enjoyed very much the self-guide tour, which gives you sufficient information about the ship. More details can be found in the museum area. Very interestingly done! One gets a good idea of life at sea on board such a ship. For me a must visit when in San Francisco.

Take the time to visit one of the last two working Liberty Ships in the world. Great views of the bay and city. Ship is generally staffed with ex U.S. Sailors who served on similar ships. There is an impressive tour that takes you into the engine room. Its worth it for that along. Educational and fun for all ages. Amazing cargo ship! Its technically still active so you arent allowed to go in certain areas but there is still so much to see. Tickets are $20 for each adult and you can plan to spend one to two hours here. It is a self guided tour so you can explore at your own pace. Do not go here if you are not able to climb up and down ladders. The ship is very well kept and all the staff are very friendly and knowledgeable. Parts from the movie Titanic were filmed aboard. The ship has also been to Normandy.

If I had it all to do over again, I would have spent all day on this ship. From the upper decks to the engine room, it was a fantastic experience for me.Oh, and they have a large diorama that shows how the OBrien took part in D-Day. I love me a good diorama and the lady in the gift shop left her post to give me a tour of it.This is a great example of living history, a ship crewed by volunteers making an enormous effort to keep the ship viable. That it sails and you can take a short cruise on it (only during specific times of year, be sure and check before you go) is not only amazing but I was charmed by the entire experience and will make an effort to get back for a cruise.

This is one of the rare ships that survived the Normandy attack. Also, this is the one of the two ships still functioning among the ~2700 Liberty class ships made. The ship is well maintained and almost all areas of the ship are accessible. If you climb to the front turret area, you can aim the turret by rotating a wheel which is really cool. Also, the engine room is famous as the Titanic movie scene before iceberg collision was filmed here.

Not one singular thing won the Second World War. All efforts contributed to the destruction and dismantling of hateful and fascist regimes. To be in the presence of one of those mechanical efforts is awe-inspiring. Yeah, a Liberty ship may not be sexy or necessarily eye-appealing, but these ships were the foundation of multiple successful military campaigns. This ship is the s**t.
