A hidden gem in the Lower East Side surrounded by Chinese shops and right next to a Buddhist temple. Beautiful architecture with tons of symbolism. The museum is very small but provides a good background of how the Jewish community established and grew in NY. Since it is not busy, you can take your time reading all the information and sitting and reflecting. The piece de resistance is the temple itself. It is breathtaking!! There are no words to explain how majestic and peaceful it is. As you enter, WOW! The gorgeous stained window , the chandeliers, and the wood surrounding the nave are incredible. One has to sit to take in all the beauty in this temple. The tour guides are so knowledgeable and funny!

I visited years ago the China town Synagogue and museum built at the end of 19th century. I found the building is well kept and operated. The lady we got as guide was very kind, attentive most informative and ready to answer any questions from international visitors. We got to know that the Synagogue was not a worship place only, it also rendered services to immigrants as a travel office, legal assistance point, loan bank, general and language school etc. primarily in the first half of 20th century. The local Jewish community did it best to assist people already arrived or would be immigrant family members or friends mostly from Eastern Europe. The tour in the Synagogue might take minimum 1.5 hours. #synagogue

Visited this location as part of the OHNY Weekend program. Gorgeous space with with plenty of interpretive information describing the origin, history, and restoration. The museum is known for its modern stainglass window motif design which sits harmoniously with the overall space. A neighborhood gem well worth the visit!

This is a beautiful place. The building is very well kept and the staff is very nice. When we visited the museum, there was a concert taking place. We were allowed in and could enjoy the end of the concert for free. Because of the beautiful lightning and colored windows, there is a wonderful atmosphere over there. Hard to imagine you’re in the heart of Manhattan when you are inside. Definitely worth a visit, whether you are religious or not.

Fascinating view of a vanished society. Learning about the Jewish immigrants who settled in this part of Manhattan and helped to build New York into the city it is today was really interesting. The synagogue is beautiful, and even the story of its restoration and renewal is amazing. The tour lasts about an hour or so, but you really learn a lot. The exhibit in the basement about the Jews of Harbin is interesting as well.

“Mesmerizing stained glass, never miss it!”Located in Chinatown, Eldridge Street Synagogue may be the most beautiful synagogue in New York. Especially, never miss the main stained glass which was added in 2010 during its restoration. Ive seen many stained glassed while traveling America, but havent met such one. Amazing. When I first entered into an entrance, I thought $14 admission fee is a little bit too much for its small size. It changed as going up to the main floor and seeing a sea-like blue stained glass. The building is not so big like St. Patrik Cathedral or E-Manuel Temple on 5th Ave so one can look around in 20 mins if you walk fast. But I spent almost 2 hrs just looking all the stained glasses and delicate ornaments. Just walk through the nave or sit on it for a while and appreciate its beauty.

An astonishing restoration that has to be seen to be believed. I wasnt prepared for the main sanctuary after entering on the lower level and seeing the chapel first. They are more than happy to share their knowledge.

This museum is such a great representation of the diverse makeup of the Lower East Side. The synagogue is its anchor, which has earned National Historic Landmark designation and is quite impressive in its own right. What a fabulous museum! My family played an important role in the hay day of this synagogue. The museum has done a remarkable job at both sustaining and restoring the Synagogues most magnificent edifice and at teaching the history of the community which built the Synagogue. The guides are extremely informative and there are few landmarks in the City, artistic, and religious which can compare to the Eldridge Street Synagogue.
