Absolutely iconic. No point in going just to the Manhattan Bridge. Do Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridge both. Photograph both from the other. You can get them in full too. Walk on either is tantalizingly exciting. Its alot like walking through Hollywood history. The constant rumble of cars going past beneath is very, very exciting. OH and BTW, the cars are going between Manhattan and Brooklyn. What a coincidence. And if youre lucky, you have a subway train go by too!

One of the major tourist attractions in NYC. The bridge was the last of the three suspension spans built across the lower East River, following the Brooklyn and Williamsburg Bridges. In the earliest plans it was to have been called Bridge No. 3, but was given the name Manhattan Bridge in 1902. When the name was confirmed in 1904, The New York Times criticized it as meaningless, lobbied for one after Brooklyns Wallabout Bay, and railed that the span would have geographical and historical significance if it were known as the Wallabout Bridge. In 1905, the Times renewed its campaign, stating, All bridges across the East River are Manhattan bridges. When there was only one, it was well enough to call it the Brooklyn Bridge, or the East River Bridge.

One of the popular tourist attraction in New York! Great place to visit and take a photos of wonderful Manhattan Bridge! There are cafes around the corner where you can still see the beautiful bridge while having a meal or drinking a cup of tea. You should visit this place and have a look of the bridge!

I had this in my checklist while traveling NY, because of the many interviews of Woody Allen. We booked some weekend long pass which gave us free trips on this bridge and the other ones after sunset. There is entrance of this bridge with Greek sculpture. Came here once again in daylight, on a bicycle. I saw an artist painting a powder-landscape of it from the Brooklyn side.

Alright have I got you convinced yet? Now the important part, how exactly do you get here? The bridge is mostly a car bridge, but on one side (facing downtown) youll find the pedestrian path and on the other side (facing Queens) youll find the bike path. From Manhattan walk to the intersection of Bowery and Canal streets and look for stairs to enter. From Brooklyn, look for Sands and Jay street - and the stairs to enter.

The Manhattan Bridge is one of three gorgeous bridges that connect Manhattan to Brooklyn. Specifically it connects Canal Street in the Chinatown section of Manhattan to the downtown section of Brooklyn, but there’s so much more that you may not know. The official color of Manhattan is “Manhattan Bridge Blue” named for the color of the bridge, which was originally grey.2. It was built following the success of the Brooklyn Bridge which created so much growth for Brooklyn that another bridge became a necessity.3. When the bridge first open it was adorned with statues of two women: one symbolizing Manhattan and the other Brooklyn. Miss Brooklyn and Miss Manhattan were designed by Daniel Chester French, the artist behind the Lincoln Memorial’s Abe Lincoln. The statues were there for fifty years before being moved to the Brooklyn Art Museum.  The bridge now has replicas in place of the originals.4. You’ve seen the Manhattan Bridge in movies like “I Am Legend” with Will Smith, “The Lonely Guy” starring Steve Martin and “Once Upon A Time In America” with Robert De Niro and James Woods.5. The bridge first opened to traffic on December 31, 1909.6. Originally the Manhattan Bridge was going to be called “Bridge No. 3” because she was the third bridge built across the East River. The New York Times criticized that name calling it “meaningless”. What are the other two bridges? The Brooklyn Bridge and the Williamsburg Bridge. The Manhattan Bridge is the star of the famous painting by American artist Edward Hopper, “Manhattan Bridge Loop”, painted in 1928.

From a tourist standpoint, an excellent alternative to Brooklyn Bridge. If you have already walked across that bridge, Manhattan Bridge will offer less crowds and stunning views of Lower Manhattan which will include Brooklyn Bridge. You will exit out to the civic area with an easy walk to DUMBO. Be aware that the subway does cross the bridge, which is loud.

In April 1986, workers temporarily closed the Manhattan-bound roadway on the upper level in order to repair the deck there.[44] The north-side subway tracks, underneath the Manhattan-bound roadway, were also closed during this time.[45] In December 1987, inspectors also shut one lane of the lower level due to a crack in the deck.[46] The New York City Department of Transportation published a list of 17 structurally deficient bridges in the city. Among them was the Manhattan Bridge, which needed $166 million in repairs to fix cable anchors and torsion of steel members as subways cross.[47] Repairs on the northern side of the Manhattan Bridge were complete by the end of 1988,[43] and the subway tracks on the north side were reopened. Simultaneous with the reopening of the north side, the south-side tracks were closed.[48] In 1991, trucks were banned from the lower level because they were too heavy for the decaying bridge.[49]Major repair work on the southern side began in 1992.[43] The Yonkers Construction Company was awarded a $97.8 million contract for the repair project in August 1992.[50] City Comptroller Elizabeth Holtzman originally denied the contract to the company because of concerns about corruption,[51] but she was overridden by Mayor David Dinkins, who wanted to complete repairs quickly.[50] At the same time, the NYCDOT increased the frequency of maintenance inspections for the bridge, after inspectors found holes in beams that had been deemed structurally sound during previous inspections.[52] The Brooklyn-bound roadway on the upper level was closed from 1993 to 1996 so that side of the bridge could be repaired.[53] The bridge repairs were repeatedly delayed as the renovation process uncovered more serious structural problems underlying the bridge. The original plans had been to complete the renovations by 1995 for $150 million, but by 1996, the renovation was slated to be complete in 2003 at a cost of $452 million.[41] By 2001, it was estimated that the total cost of the renovations had reached half a billion dollars, including $260 million for the south side and another $175 million for the north side. At the time, the NYCDOT had set a January 2004 deadline for the renovation.[54]The original pedestrian walkway on the south side of the bridge was reopened after forty years in June 2001.[55] It was shared with bicycles until late summer 2004, when a dedicated bicycle path was opened on the north side of the bridge. The northern bridge bike path is notable for poor signage that leads to cyclist and pedestrian conflicts.[56] By the time work on the bridge was completed in 2004, the final cost of the renovation totaled $800 million.[23]To celebrate the bridges centennial anniversary, a series of events and exhibits were organized by the New York City Bridge Centennial Commission in October 2009. These included a ceremonial parade across the Manhattan Bridge on the morning of October 4 and a fireworks display in the evening.[57] In 2009, the bridge was designated as a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark by the American Society of Civil Engineers.[

The good old Manhattan Bridge to get over to downtown Manhattan area, either by train, car, bus, biking or walking. When your across, your at China Town and walking distance to Little Italy areas. As soon as your over, theres a few shopping and eating businesses on both sides of the bridge. For the rush hour time, get ready to wait in traffic. The bridge did get a make over years ago but if you ask me, theres still a lot of work to be done.

Way less crowded than the Brooklyn Bridge, and offers excellent views of Chinatown, the East River, and Lower Manhattan. The bridge goes over the FDR highway, which is a nice view.See some authentic 70s-80s style New York graffiti on the Chinatown buildings and some on the bridge itself.Subway trains run almost constantly over the bridge causing plenty of noise and shaking, making it exciting.hope you dont meet up with the guy who had his large dog not on a leash on the bridge.I thought it was a stray, and I was kind of scared when it ran towards me barking threateningly. The owner called it back to him,but then it ran at me a second time. Both times I thought I was about to have a chunk of flesh taken off my leg! Other than that it was great!

The Manhattan Bridge is the under-loved brother of the Brooklyn. This blueish structure is also iconic gracing the beautiful views of DUMBO (and lower Manhattan) and is responsible for coining this Brooklyn neighborhood for the space underneath. It has been used as a backdrop in films like Spider-Man and editorial shots in GQ. Visit on a Thursday night in the summer for live music under the bridge or stroll across it to China Town and take in the vibes.

The metro is passing by on the left and the water is far below you on your right. If youre afraid of heights then there is nothing to worry about walking the Brooklyn Bridge. You walk in the center of the bridge on a secure wood path that has a walking lane and bike lane. The views you get of Manhattan are amazing and the experience is well worth the walk.
