I will never forget all the nights that I have spent in Smalls. This little underground jazz bar gave me a huge impact the moment I stepped in, the sound, the music, the atmosphere and the crowd. I particularly enjoyed the jam session after midnight when all the young and energetic musicians gather and practice their skills. I came here three straight nights and stayed until 3am because I dont want to miss out anything. It has been a year and I wish I will be here very soon.

What a terrific Jazz Club if you desire enjoy an amazing music you must come to this place.Cozy environment, friendly staff, fair price and well located. The Club isn’t crowded so it is not a concern for those who are claustrophobic. I am not sure if they serve any sort of food but there plenty places around where you can have same meal.

Arrive early to get your tickets in advance and to find a nice place to sit. The experience was amazing, really good music and cozy environment. They don’t serve any food here so eat before/after you go and you should be fine. The tickets also grants you access to another jazz bar across the street and for all the shows firings the night, definitely a must if you’re a jazz fan or just want to enjoy a quality evening in NYC.

Wow! If you really want an authentic jazz club/dive bar experience, this is the place! As soon as you walk down and into the room you are taken back to another time. The acoustics are barely amplified and absolutely brilliant. The act we saw was so impactful, raw and (even though we were sat near the back) almost within touching distance. This leads me to say that smalls is very intimate.I cant take stars off for this but the price of entry could be considered a little high ($20) but honestly its worth it. A one drink minimum is also applicable but they are reasonably priced. The main downside, which we didnt know until chatting to a lovely couple in the queue (got there an hour before the first act and the queue was round the block), is that you only get an hour set for your money. It is such a great place you feel fortunate to have the experience of an hour, but wish it could go on longer. You can purchase an additional set for a continuous $20 per hour.

Had the pleasure of bringing in the New Year at Smalls. First time visiting & won’t be my last. Infectious music, great gritty atmosphere, friendly staff. I sat in the corner, behind the piano. Best seat in the house. Come here to enjoy the music, not your dates conversation...close your eyes, SHUT YOUR MOUTH :) & feel the sound. Thanks, Smalls, for an unforgettable evening.

Much more vibrant than mezzrow, people here can get a bit agitated. There’re some awkward moments with some musicians on stage. Oooohhh the drama. Beware, some young musicians here for jam session are slimy and douche(I mean, it’s kinda a jazz musician thing but still). Get yourself an opposite wingperson, ladies who want to be left alone. We’re all here for music not drama right?

Small jazz club playing traditional and awesome jazz. Aim to get there at least 45 minutes before the show starts and line up on the street. It gets busy and people always get turned away at the end of the line. Also note that its cash only to enter ($20) and there is a one drink minimum (which can be paid on card). There is an ATM across the street. It can be quite loud on the front row so be aware.

Lovely jazz club with a very intimate atmosphere in a basement of a building near Chelsea. It fits probably no more than 50 people which helps to build this feeling of a unique experience. Be aware: arrive early, I mean at least 20 minutes before the show starts if you one to score a ticket and get a good spot. There are many spots in the club where you won’t be able to see the musicians (although you will hear them). There are at least two shows, you pay for each one of them and your ticket gives you admission two a second jazz club across the avenue.

I would give it a 4.5 if that was an option because they didn’t have any sort of snacks or food and I got there exhausted and hungry and there was nothing to order. The service was a bit slow but I can see how that’s fair because it is a small venue and it was very crowded. However it had an amazing feel, great atmosphere and fantastic music and performance

Smalls has everything good you could expect from an intimate jazz bar. Its definitely a must in New York do for all jazz lovers or even simply if you want to try. Their wine is really good too. And the service is great. Be careful, its small as the name tells it so it can get full very quickly. Be sure to check the time of the concerts and arrive at least 15-20 minutes in advance.

Historical bar and a landmark in New York. The space is what you should expect from a basement jazz bar: cozy. Service is ok with am good variety of wine and beers - also some appetizers. But the true experience here is to see a jazz band )or any jazz / blues variety) in this little space, making you feel like your listening in your own living room. Enjoy this experience and, most of all, arrive early and enjoy the free entrance in their other bar once you leave Smalls!

Music was good, space is intimate. On busy nights, you will want to line up early to get tickets/seating. For a Sunday 7.30pm set, we were told to line up 6.30-6.45pm (they’ll open the doors to let you in at 7pm). If you come late, you might not get in - or may end up standing room only. $20 cover and 1 drink minimum per set.

Smalls is the hub for the NYC Jazz scene. A historic landmark for the city, it is no coincidence that this is the place all of the greatest jazz musicians in the world come to play and hang out. No other jazz club has music EVERY night ALL night. Not to mention the great staff!

Jazz lovers from around the world or those looking for a typical and intimate New York cultural experience are advised to come to the little pub on W 10th st. Called the Smalls Jazz Club. The place has been operating for over 20 years and host talented players and bands. The atmosphere is intimate and close, and the front row people can really touch the artists soul, okay sometimes even his foot or cello ... I already said - a unique experience ... :) The original owner of the place, Mitch Borden is usually at the entrance and responsible for the line.He opened a pub of the same style, also in the village called Mezzrow. Make sure to check the home page and follow the show schedule. a one hour arrival is recommanded.

The music is good, the acoustics are fine. The space is small and - while it can get crowded at times - kind of cozy.None of the positive attributes matter much when the staff turn a blind eye toward drunken tourists who think theyve come to a local pub to watch a game of soccer/rugby.Its really hard to enjoy the music in this club with all that shouting. If music is what youre looking to hear, go somewhere else.

The best in jazz period! The owners have been dedicated to helping young talent develop in the heart of NYC and the club now has the authenticity of a Village Vanguard due to it’s careful nurturing of talent and history!!!I love performing there as well! Spike is a great host and he always makes sure that the band is well taken care of! The staff is courteous and kind! The admission charge is reasonable as are the drink prices! It’s a great club to see and support cutting edge jazz. We were travelling from Melbourne Australia and looking to hear some quality jazz. We found it here, only an hour but top flight stuff. The seating was pretty ordinary and the requirement to buy a drink after paying US$20 over the top, considering a water was $5US. The doorman ( owner manager ) asked if I was Australian, which obviously I was. I then asked if he was from Australia to which he replied - yes . I asked where from and he then explained how everyone asked him that and that if I bought him a drink he might tell me. As if I really cared, one thing I know for sure he wasnt anyone worth spending money on a drink.

Smalls is amazing, the later the better! The programs never disappoint me. I urge all the tourists who want to check out this spot to respect the musicians and your fellow customers. This is not a bar to chat with your friends where jazz is just in the background. The music is the center here and nothing you can say is more beautiful. To the owner or the manager, I love how you maintained this place and I will continue to be a loyal customer as long as you help me shushing the chatty ones ;-)

The musicians were great! But the place itself was not good. I get that jazz clubs have a certain charm, a lived in funk that comes with the territory but this place was downright filthy. The waitress was useless, she came to us once during the two hours we were there (we stayed because we paid cover and the music was great) she was constantly chattering and playing cards with the bartender, they were talking over the music most of the time. So rude!! Also empty beer bottles and glasses on the floor under chairs. Definitely wouldnt go back.

This was one of worst clubs Ive been to in ny. I arrived and purchased tickets and was suggested to go to their sister club down the street. The staff there was downright rude, and when I came back to smalls the whole management was disorganized and resulted in a shouting match with another patron. I will be passing on this place from now on, its a shame as they used to be one of the best. Now the drinks are just over priced and the staff acts entitled.

I attended Smalls last night (Friday) and despite their website saying you pay £20 per show which should last around 2 hours, this is not the case. You pay £20 for one hour. The band was great and I enjoyed the music. What was not up to my expectation was the fact that it was packed with tourists; this negates the ‘real Live Jazz experience’.They’ve also suggested to the audience to not record the show as they upload everything online. What they did not say is that you have to pay to watch it online. If you do not mind any of the above, then Smalls is an okay place to visit.
