A few years ago, some friends and I spent a week at Degas House. We booked both available suites, and had a simply amazing stay. I arrived a bit earlier than the rest of my party, and was greeted by a lovely, cheerful staff, and lead to a beautiful room to wait. The woman who greeted me at the door brought me a glass of really good red wine and engaged in pleasant conversation while I waited. Once everyone else arrived, we were helped to our suites. The rooms were meticulously cleaned, and stunning. Both suites had balconies. The one I stayed in overlooked a charming courtyard. The beds were the most comfortable Ive ever slept in, and the enormous tub had several jets! The kitchen was completely furnished, with dishes, a coffee maker, corkscrews, etc, and the fridge stayed stocked with refreshments. There was even a beautiful sherry decanter that was magically refilled each time we went out. Lol. The location is within walking distance of Bourbon Street, Jackson Square, etc. There was also a bus stop just outside. The staff made our stay absolutely amazing, and I definitely hope to return someday!!

This is an exquisitely beautiful venue. I was there for a wedding and everything was perfect. The outdoor courtyard is stunning and the interior rooms are perfect for a reception. My favorite part of the evening was sitting with friends on a gorgeous New Orleans avenue under the Spanish moss, the air heavy with fragrant flowers. The catered food is delicious. Overall an excellent experience.

What an amazing stay. We stayed in the William Bell Suite. The room was beautiful. Not sure why all the negative reviews. Rooms were clean. Staff was wonderful. Yes, its an older building but isnt that the point? If you want a newer building go stay in a place with no culture in some corporate hotel. Want a place with New Orleans charm? Stay here.

Good side-great room and breakfast. Bad-another guest easily broke into room saying it was hers. Interior locks are cheap. All electric items were unplugged, so I had to move heavy furniture, including a 200lb plus bed to get things to work. Staff was aware that previous users had unplugged but did not address. Took awhile to reset alarm as normal buttons did not function. Worst issue was tv not properly set to work. Multiple voice mails seeking help were not returned for days and staff did not staff office during posted hours. When I finally got a response, was told that “this is not a hotel.” So bottom line, fine spot unless there is a problem because then you are on your own.

We didnt love our stay here. It was very expensive, the breakfast was pretty terrible (love to Denise though--shes a sweetheart), and our room was WAY below par. The staff is very friendly and the house is in a nice neighborhood - about a mile from City Park. If you dont have a car, you can usually get a Lyft/Uber within 5 minutes. The breakfasts are also amazing. We stayed in the Josephine room, which is quite spacious. Its an old house and a little worn in parts. For example one of the faucet handles in the shower kept coming off. Although the neighborhood is fairly quiet, ound carries through the house. The staff was very loud when they were getting breakfast ready. Also, the house has a lot of events. There was a wedding and a fashion show going on while we were there, but fortuneatly they didnt go too late.

The house is beautiful, the breakfast is wonderful. The air-conditioning in the Josephine room never worked while we were there, had to sleep with the windows open- they did bring us a box fan. We reported the ac issue the day we arrived and our third day there, all we received was the box fan. We are fortunate we were there in February and not July or we wouldnt have survived the heat and humidity. Its an old house with quirks but the ac going out is a deal breaker.

Review №33

We wanted this to be a good tour and experience. Unfortunately it just wasnt. As a fan of Degas and his works I knew wed be visiting the house and not an art museum, and I wasnt expecting to see any original pieces of artwork. There are other museums to have that experience.Heres the thing; please dont start what is to be a 60-90 minute tour by forcing us to watch a 30-40 minute PBS documentary from the late 90s that is definitely showing its age. Were actually HERE! Im on vacation to see and experience things that I cant from home and while I may not be able to find this exact film due to its age and quality, I can certainly watch other award-winning documentaries about Degas from the comfort of my home. There are times that a multimedia experience can add to the overall impact of an in-person experience, but if you are going to do anything...do it right. Get a quality multimedia setup and not a cheap $100 TV with no speakers that muffles the narrators voice and makes it tough to impossible for a room to understand. If you are going to show a film, do it well. If you are going to show a film, let your docent expound on that information and not criticize or contradict it for being wrong. Our docent made multiple statements that a couple facts in the video were wrong and they dont know what they are talking about. Your own docent then diminishes the experience that you just asked us to enjoy. The docent was rude and curt throughout...often stumbling mightily over her tour points and complaining about everything; the computers arent working, someone moved my demonstration, I think this rule is stupid, etc. She also at one time in the tour insulted a tour attendee not in our party who sneezed, demanded no one look at their phones during the tour otherwise shed lose her train of thought, and more. Regardless of her connection to Degas and the home, her attitude diminished the experience. Finally, dont expect anything original here. No original paintings or artwork which is to be expected. But even the elements on the tour are of the quality of a class project and certainly not up to the standards of a quality experience...outside of your memories of your 4th grade classroom. Poster board diagrams, a meddling timeline of his life on computer printouts taped to one wall, etc. Again, if you need a visual aid, do it right. Hire a professional or spend some time at Kinkos to have quality visual aids and materials created that show your passion for Degas and your tour experience. This should have been at most a 30 minute tour, not 90, and an experienced, nice, and well presented tour and guide would have improved the experience.

Amazing!! Absolutely amazing!! My husband and I just had our wedding there last weekend and I can not say enough kind words about this staff and venue. We planned this wedding in six weeks from out of state and from beginning to end, it was perfect. It was so nice having everything in one spot and we really had very little to handle. They took care of EVERYTHING. One of our favorite moments was when one of the servers came out on the dance floor and showed us how to do the Cupid Shuffle. She rocked it!! So fun. Beautifully situated on Esplanade Ave, which I think is the most beautiful street in all of NOLA. The houses have different rooms. Each has its own character. We stayed in the Mathilda. I do recommend that you call ahead and double check which room you get. Not all have jacuzzi tubs, or claw foot tubs. Some of the rooms need minor updates, nothing major, normal wear for older homes. The staff however!!!! Let me just say how much I love this staff!!!!! They are awesome!!! The breakfast ladies, two of the friendliest and best cooks in NOLA... Love their French toast.... Well i must say my weekend was a bit of a nightmare. I am a frequent visitor to the city and in the interest of diversity i decided to splash out for a stay at the Degas House. Without question the house and staff are top notch. The problem lies in the fact that the total lack of soundproofing between rooms makes the place little better than a youth hostal. Friday night i suffered through a batchelorette party that went on until 330am in the neighboring room. Saturday night the afterparty for the wedding did not end until 430am also in the neighboring room. Sunday night was relatively peaceful until 1230am when my neighbors returned and proceeded to have a very loud fight! Thankfully this ended relatively quickly and peace finally prevailed. So you see i am very disappointed with my stay. Also bed was very uncomfortable

Worth the money - Degas was the only Impressionist to visit America, and this is the only house he stayed/lived in that is open to the public. A comprehensive tour of the house (split in 2 at some point after Degass visit), with an informative video to start, is led by none other than one of Degass grand-nieces. A wealth of information, not only about Degas, but also the area during the 1870s and the Impressionist movement in France, is offered to the visitor. The art lover and the historian will be both pleased by this visit.

Overall, I was not in the house that is advertised in the photo. The pool was dirty our entire trip. They didn’t start cleaning it until we physically got there and it was way to dark to go swimming in it. It didn’t start clearing up until the actual day that we were leaving. The house was in poor condition. The walls were peeling in the bathroom. The shower and bathtub was peeling and carried a stench. It literally looked like a family just left and said here you go now you can stay. The interior wasn’t pleasant and the day we left, someone physically came in and left his wallet. I’m assuming he ran out once he realized that we hadn’t checked out yet. It was creepy and we ran out as soon as we saw the wallet. Someone had to be staying in the garage while we were there. We kept hearing noises all the time. I have pictures of the bathroom by the way-gross and disappointing unfortunately
