This place exceeded my expectations. The house and almost all the furnishings are original right down to the Limoges china in the dining room. Surprised to find that Harriet Lane has a personal friendship with Queen Victoria white her uncle was ambassador to the Britain. Very well maintained with beautiful grounds surrounded by a leafy neighborhood. Highlights are an 1827 Madeira bottle and refurbished carriage in the visitors center. Highly recommend.

A must visit to step back in time and view Wheatland, home of our nations 15th President. Built in 1828 by William Jenkins, Buchanan was our only President to remain a bachelor his entire life, his orphaned niece, Harriet Lane, whom he would adopt, would serve him wells as his official White House hostess. Remember to absorb what all he was politically involved in leading up to the American Civil War as he handed the reins over to Abraham Lincoln in such a volatile time. Simply incredible and to tour his Mansion for us was a great experience. Purchase your admittance ticket at the main building where a great exposition of items is waiting. Our hostess was dressed in a magnificent period dress, was very informative which helped to bring our tour alive when we visited in August. Restrooms on premise. Easy walking tour with stairs to climb to the second floor. Time permitting, you can visit President Buchanans Grave site at the Woodward Hill Cemetery, Lancaster, PA. Kindly click like if you find this post and my photos helpful.

Went here on a field trip with my kids class. Decent trip. Cant complain. Did a similar one to Rockford plantation and this was waaay better. Not only did they talk about James Buchanan and his contributions, but kids good a lot of if his they lived, etc. Rockford, so they did was to talk about when they received each price of art work, from whom, and in which style- to third graders.

Review №24

President James Buchanan gets a bad rap: our tour guide admitted as much. The tour of Wheatland, however, was better than many other such tours, with our tour guide knowledgeable not just about Buchanan, but about the era in which he lived, and people with whom he shared his life. Buchanan and his niece, Harriett Lane, are presented as three dimensional people rather than the subject of a history lecture. Unlike later presidential libraries, which are funded by the federal government, Wheatland is supported by a devoted group of people who clearly take pride in bringing Buchanan to life. The staff was unfailingly knowledgeable about Buchanan, area attractions, and enjoy sharing their subject. Well done. See Wheatland.

My sister and I love history and visiting these types of houses. Even though the set-up is smaller than others, we were really impressed with our tour guide. We went on a Monday, and the man who did our tour was very interesting and knowledgeable. The museum was very small, and not really worth the extra $5, but I was happy to have paid it after going on the tour of the house. The information he gave us about president Buchanan was very interesting.

Very modern museum on location that highlights some of Pennsylvania and Lancaster county history. The guided tour of the Buchanan house was very well done. The tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and professional. The mansion is nothing exceptional to see. But you do learn a bit about some of Americas somewhat obscure history. Allow approximately 2 hours for your total visit.

This was a happy surprise in Lancaster. I arrived at the museum right on the time for the last tour, and I got to visit James Buchanans House guided by Bob, a very friendly and kind tour guide dressed in a victorian costume. The house is very well maintained, it has a lot of original furniture from Buchanans time, and they care to place things exactly as how they were portrayed in documentations of the 19th century. I am not from the US, and yet through this experience I learned a bit more about a chapter of the north american history. It was totally worth the visit, and I recommend spending some time walking at the garden around the house to get in the mood.

Review №43

This is not a bad place to spend the day. There are a lot of original pieces of our former president and everything is very well preserved. They have a lot of pieces still in restoration which you can see behind glass windows in the museam portion of the tour. The downside is you cant get close enough to enjoy them. This would also be better of it wasnt the property of one of the worst US presidents.

Outstanding! If you are a fan of history, this is a must see. Visitors can explore the grounds at their leisure but are not allowed to tour the main home on their own (tours are offered on an hourly basis). My docent possessed so much knowledge of Buchanan and his immediate family. Plus her enthusiasm to share this wisdom with the group made the tour all the more enjoyable. I learned a lot about the 15th president.
