The course itself was fine but the service and hospitality was completely disappointing and outright RUDE. There was a very deep hole that was completely covered by grass and my mother’s foot went right in and she fell. We let the pro shop know to make sure that they put spray paint around it. However, when we went to tell them they didn’t apologize for it nor did they thank us for giving them a heads up. Incredibly dismissive, didn’t even look me in the eyes, and said “we sent someone out.” So rude. Terrible service for a supposedly nice course.

From the tips, the Cupp Course plays 7,079 yards with a course rating of 75.0 and a slope of 143. If you were skiing, the tips would be rated Double-Black Diamonds; in other words, they are for the pros. So, if your golf game has never been written about in Golf Digest, you probably shouldn’t play from back here. Several holes require carries of 225+ just to find mother earth. If you’re still debating this feat, stroll on over to the 9th tee and take a look at what you need to do with your tee shot on the 472-yard par 4. That’s right, 472-yard, par 4!Cupp created the course on a computer, something that is commonplace nowadays but not so much in the early 1990s. That’s why you will find a lot of straight lines and recognizable geometric figures, especially when it comes to the bunkers. There’s a lot of mounding too, in and around fairways and greens alike. The greens come in all sizes and shapes, several with false fronts, unfriendly slopes and a lot of subtle undulations.Memorable HolesOne of the holes that brings back memories – not necessarily good – is the 2nd, a par 5 that plays a mere 468 yards from the White Tees. From the distance alone, it sounds like a no-brainer to go for the green in two, however the creek that makes its way across the fairway may have you thinking twice. It sits about 240 yards from the green and if you’re not on the left side of the fairway, you’ll have to lay up anyway. Up near the green, trees really crowd the right side and with all the mounding, the left is no bargain either. Even at 468 yards, par is still a good score.Number 10 is a three-shot par 5, that plays 474 yards from the White Tees. I say three-shot because of the large pond that sits directly in front of the green. Play left of the large fairway bunker on the left and then hit a layup shot short of the water and then a short approach shot to an elevated two-tiered green.Another favorite hole – and one that gives you about the best chance at birdie on the course – is the short par 4, Number 11, which plays 290 yards from the white tees. Hit something less than driver off the tee, short of the triangular bunker, and you’ll be left with a short pitch shot to a green where the pin is probably blocked out by a large mound. The green’s not real deep so distance control is at a premium.A good course needs a great finishing hole and Number 18 is ready to take on anyone who dares. It’s a par 4, dogleg right around two lakes that plays 357 yards from the White Tees. Playing your tee shot down the left side of the fairway will give you the best approach angle and take the water out of play as much as possible. Any pin placements on the right side and the water is in play, no matter where you come at it from. Make your par and head to the 19th hole. After your round, head into the clubhouse to Baird’s Pub for your favorite après-golf libation. Baird’s also has an outstanding menu with a Lowcountry theme that showcases many of Hilton Head Island’s fresh local ingredients. In fact, all of their seafood and meet dishes are prepared fresh daily. The pro shop at Palmetto Hall is one of the best stocked in the area for men’s and women’s golf apparel and they carry several unique designers. They are more than willing to accommodate whatever you’re looking for, so if you don’t see what you want, just ask and they’ll help you find it.Last Word: The Cupp Course is one of the most exciting layouts on the Island as it winds its way through dense oak and pine forests and large Lowcountry marshes. From an aerial view, the layout is spectacular with its geometry all over the course. From a playing perspective, it can be as tough or as gentle as you want it, just pick the right set of tees. With narrow fairways and natural impediments at both ends of the fairway, each hole offers a new start, regardless of how you did on the previous hole.

Great course, always in great shape 2 courses to choose from and both challenging as well as scoring holes. Very well laid out and not too long of a course either. Definitely check out Palmetto Hall when in the area or while in HHI!

Played the Hills course. It was in excellent condition, considering we played in the middle of the summer. Loved the layout. I’d have to imagine this is one of the beat values on the island. My only gripe would be the bunkers could use some attention, however it won’t deter me from returning or giving a 5 star rating.

Course was good, great value for the price. Very long holes, unfortunately we had to wait a while behind a slow group not letting people play through, great customer service though. They offered us a free 9 for the inconvenience!

Better greens than Old South. Carts are still noisy gas. Cart paths need some serious work...or replace carts with ATVs.

Played as the last 18 round in the afternoon. Multiple water hazards were empty and since I was the last Full round of the day, they decided not to fill the cooler with ice and was kind enough to hand me a pencil NOT EVEN SHARPENED with a score card. Challenging course, and I am glad I did not pay full price or I would have been disappointed. The pro shop was nice, I had to buy a collard shirt and I got a hat on discount form the sale rack. Good course but they seem to be OK with stuff not being maintained except for the greens which were really nice and rolled pretty decent as well.

Played the Cupp course(twosome). Our tee time was at 3p.m. on a Wednesday and we basically had the course to ourselves. The greens were in really good shape and rolled at a decent speed. Lots of water and sand as you would expect on a HHI course. Only reason I didnt give 5 stars was the course is a little difficult to navigate hole2hole when you are a 1st time visitor. Got turned around a few times but eventually figured it out.

We booked a tee time at the Arthur Hills course on the recommendation of a guy we met in a local golf store. We were already playing the three Palmetto Dunes courses during the week and had a spare day available to play a new course. This was his firm favorite of the moderately priced (non-Sea Pines) options in the area.In all honesty, we felt just a little disappointed after the round. Although the course was very pleasant, it wasnt spectacular in any way, with the possible exception of the 18th hole which is a gem to look at and a great test of golf. The range facilities were ok, nothing special and frankly, the service provided to us by the staff was a notch or two down from the RTJ course we played at Palmetto Dunes the day before. The course was also a notch down but to be fair, so was the greens fee ($50 cheaper to be precise). The course is absolutely fine and well priced compared with those of a similar standard elsewhere on the Island i.e. better than say Shipyard, not as good as Palmetto Dunes or Sea Pines. If I were asked the same question we asked, I would probably point someone towards Olde South rather than here. The huge let down for us on the day was the speed of play. The foursome in front of us took more than 5 hours to complete their round and refused to invite us through on the several occasions we caught them on the tee box. The marshal told us he had warned them the first time he came around but this didnt make any difference and it was another 9 holes before he returned again, this time just for a wave as he drove by. It really is frustrating when a facility does not take the initiative to care for the majority of their guests when a group is clearly holding everyone up.

Palmetto Hall Plantation (Robert Cupp course), rated 3-1/2 stars: Some of Robert Cupps original sharp lines, angles and geometric symmetry have mellowed with time, but this computer-aided design golf course, is still a bit different than the norm. The pyramid shaped mounding, and geometric bunkering and water-hazards are special, as is the good mix of holes with water and those without.
