It was a great day for a hike, fog drifted in close by, but did not detain the sunshine. I was pleasantly surprised by how forested the area was with so much lava rock. The trail is marked with rock piles. I met up with people birding, they were saying this was an as good place to see indigenous birds.
Easy to find, and parking spaces available at the trailhead. My toddler was able to hike it part of the way on foot, then we used the hiking carrier the rest of the way. Its a well maintained trail. Most of it is not shaded so Id highly suggest to bring sunscreen.
Great hike , easy to moderate. Bring a water bottle and have fun.
Very nice trail with views of both Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa. Interesting terrain. Birds and Ohia trees. It was bright and sunny the day we were here, so bring sunscreen. Seems like it could easily have been rainy (or at least dewy) due to the clouds that were moving in as we left. There is a cloud forest (my word for it, an area with bigger trees) area about a mile into the hike, that I found really interesting and full of birds.
Nice and easy hike extra water is advised when warm and sunny!
The trail is rough but really just makes it more fun
This is a good hike if you want to be out in nature by yourself and get a good workout. No amazing views or scenery. Ohia trees were blooming in October and were very pretty. Moderate hike with some steep hills and lots of tripping hazards.
Welly being cared for beauty of Hawaii
Another must go hike, if you’re dedicated hiker like myself. Word of caution goes here as well – watch your steps guys and gals – those volcanic rocks are very sharp and slippery at the times, because here is lots of moisture in the air (my lesson learned hard way ;-)
Great place to see native birds and flora.
An easy and short trail, for beginners and pros. Theres a beautiful lava field about a third of the way in. Lots of native Hawaiian birds along the trail and in the forests.
Hiking trail with opportunities to see rare Hawaiian birds, trees, and ancient lava flows. Small parking lot just off saddle road. Please use boot scraper before using trail to prevent the spread of invasive plants
Great walk. Hiking boots and hiking sticks useful. Prepare for rain.
Awesome hike over both aa and pahoehoe lava flows and also going into surviving little islands of dense rainforest. Beware the total hike length is somewhere between 8 and 8.7 miles. Thats going out to where it meets the dirt service road (also called powerline road) and walking back along that then following the highway back to the start of the trail.
Nice and easy trail.
Great trail for seeing Hawaiian birds. Lots of rocks to walk over, but its worth it.
Beautiful but bring a rain jacket
Great hiking place with great chances of seeing the Akiapolaau
Nice trail over a variety of volcanic landscapes and through several kipukas (remnant islands of mature tropical forest). This is one of the best places to find endemic Hawaiian birds on the Big Island. The Hawaii Elepaio, Iiwi and Apapane are likely to be found within a mile of the trailhead. This is the best place to find the rare Akiapolaau, but you need to hike in 4 miles.
Is ok
Worth the hike!
To die for, for naturalists and birders
Pretty
