These woods are the jewel in the crown of sad Gary. Nature conservationists and wildlife lovers will undoubtably blow a massive wad here. A moderately rugged trail will lead you through prairie, marsh, dunes, ducks, tall grass, frogs, turtles, wetlands, deer, oak trees, cranes, and Zillions of wildflowers. The trail does not loop, does not have a ton of shade and ends on the beach a Lake Michigan. This glorious( yet relatively small) remnant of shoreline Biodiversity will definitely satiate every nature enthusiast appetite. And remember- you’re just a visitor here. This place is a tiny home to Migratory birds and other wildlife. We’ve completed destroyed their once thriving habitat with Mills, agriculture and over development of gross, cookie cutter houses. Respecting this and other forest preserves is the very least we can do.
Beautiful place, unfortunately lots of trails were flooded. We were getting a lot of rain lately though.Get your food from captain house in Gary and have a wonderful picnic in Miller woods.DEFINITELY coming back.
Hours of hiking here through beautiful, gentle slopes, dunes, water bodies. Just what the doctor prescribed
An outstanding trail in the Indiana Dunes National Park. It includes an oak savannah, lagoons, mirram grass and spectacular views of Lake Michigan as a reward at the end of the trail. There is extensive plant diversity and bird watching. Facilities are available. Parking is free. Educational programs are available. If you only stop at one place in the Dunes, this should be it. Close to highways and Chicago.
Be nice if theyd build better park there for the kids.
The Paul Douglas Center has so much to offer. There are exhibits on nature and friendly staff to answer questions. There is a biodiverse trail and a beach at the end. DO NOT MISS THIS LOCATION!
This is one of my favorite places in the national park. You have a oak savannah interpersed with small lakes. There is a great variety of plants in the spring and summer. The Miller Wood walk is especially nice. It takes you all the way to the beach and the terrain keeps changing. You have savannah, dunes and beach. In the summer the courtesy park bus can you back to your parking lot.
Amazing view of Chicago
Not bad. Dont feel safe
Beautiful walk, hike any time of the year. Park at the Paul Douglas Center, for more parking, though there is a small lot directly at the Woods on Lake Street, Miller Ind.Trail is easy to moderate with a few sand hills to cross but even mid-summer, not enough to get you winded.Beautiful scenery everywhere, from lush trees to a vast array of seasonal wildflowers. Lots of birds, not unusual to see a variety of Herons and Ducks.Trail winds through dunes to a lagoon and eventually to Lake Street on the shores of Lake Michigan.Need some quiet, alone time? Some family together time? Or a walk with your special someone, Miller Woods is the place.
