A great monument dedicated to a spectacular human being who though only survived the war until he was just 20 years old, lives on, in the legend that is The Angel of Maryes heights, having risked his own life to provide water and blankets to the wounded and dying. For nearly an hour and a half, without the flag of truce, he would return time and time again to refill canteens of water and provide human decency to those of both sides.Soldiers from both sides watched in awe, and, this monument depicts that moment amongst the very ground it occurred on...An incredible monument and place to stand and see for anyone, but, especially for a history buff.

I always love to visit the battlefield. I go very early in the morning and it is always neat and clean. The Kirkland Monument is my favorite.

Interesting history here. A major site for civil war buffs. I am amazed that so many of the original structures have survived. That makes it so much easier to visualize the historic events that took place here. The visitors center movies provide context, so be sure to include them during your vidit. A great place to take kids and out of town visitors.

Nice area to walk around, the monument is emotionally moving. A testiment to a good man, doing a good thing in a ferocious battlefield at no small risk to himself.

This monument really touched me, especially after the telling from the state ranger. Such a selfless act in the midst of chaos and cannons. And yet it was recognized from afar, from his enemy, what it was he was doing. Quite a story, check it out

We visit thus monument whenever we are in the area. Richard Kirkland was a member of our family, and we are very proud of what he did for the injured on both sides. Many of our sons are named after him.
