As with most battlefields it is quiet and serine. The history here is evident as you walk down the sunken road and up to the Cemetery. This is a great place to visit for a little history and understanding of what was the cost to both sides in the of taking Fredericksburg

I didnt realize how big this place was. There are several different areas that follow the battle from the Wilderness through Spotsylvania and beyond. Sorry and moderate take to hike, and shelters with paintings and plaques so you can visit even if its raining.

What a great experience for tweens. So much history and amazing grave yards to peruse in. Loved it!

Kids and I got a Junior Ranger Acitivity book from the Rangers and we walked around reading the information. It was very educational. Some things we had to skip to keep moving due to kids getting restless. But overall the kids and I enjoyed it. Kids were wowed about the bullet holes in Innis House. While standing at grave #2864 and reading a story from the activity book, we could have a sense of what the writer was feeling.

A perfect 2 hour self guided tour for a family with young children. The Park Ranger was so kind and listened to each of the childrens answers. So much history in this area.

Pretty cool. Confederate battle field with trench lines and artillery. Lots of trails to walk.

Well preserved historical site. Trail was a nice hike. Museum was closed due to COVID but the gift shop was open.

Interesting and sad. There is a lot to learn about our history and heroes youve never heard of before. My favorite was the confederate soldier who brought water to injured Union soldiers on the battlefield. Richard Rowland Kirkland

Great civil war battlefield and well preserved. I took the short guided tour. The ranger was fantastic, this is a must do. The walk might be a tenth of a mile but the ranger walked us through so much. The visitors center is great but getting our and seeing the battlefield an cemetery is where you want to be.

Excellent time of year to walk the hiking paths!We enjoyed going out to the cabin site and also seeing the large rock pyramid near the train rails. I can imagine that in the summer it would be impossible to get out there as theres a lot of high weeds around the pyramid in particular. So, lack of bugs and less weed growth made for an easy hike.

Awesome place to take a walk and learn some history, take a seat on a bench on the heights and watch military planes cruising by to andrews AFB

Beautiful place to go & look out over the city

The visitor center is nice ..but getting to the appropriate spot is another story. The traffic is ridiculous and trying to find the Chatham house is a story all by itself. You have to at least hit stop #3 and walk up the hill. Just to let you know its a little steeper than a hill. The things I do for the General....I hope he appreciates it. :)

Wow!! We didnt spend nearly enough time here. They have done an amazing job keeping a piece of our history here for us to see and reflect on. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable. I highly recommend an afternoon not just a couple of hours.

A Small Confederate battlefield with some unique photos. I understood how this place was significant in history. A cool cemetery right beside the visitor center.

Had a wonderful visit. The gardens are lovely and the house and displays a fabulous reminder of a by-gone era.

The displays depict life in early colonial America. At the time that we went, there were enactments of actual colonial life going on since it was the peak visitor season in June that year.

I stopped by Stonewall Jacksons death site. I saw the grave marker and the house in which he passed away from wounds in battle on top of pneumonia. The house was locked but I could look through the windows. It is about 4 miles from I 95. It was a nice brief break from the drive. It took about 10-15 minutes to see.

VOC is a great place. Cant wait to go back to canoe some more. Worth every penny.

Great small park to see and I would recommend taking the tour. Park Ranger Brett that gave us our tour was awesome!! My 3 year son keep standing near him and coping his movements and Ranger Brett let him hold his folder and walk with him during the tour.

Excellent visitors center. Friendly rangers. So many died there and in battlefields all over the South. Sad to realize how many fell, on both sides.

Fredericksburg National Battlefield is a beautifully preserved piece of history from the civil way. Its a very enjoyable place to visit and learn about what this country went through during outright civil war. This is a must see if youre in the area.Downtown historic Fredericksburg is a great place to visit and get a cup of coffee or a bite to eat at many of the restaurants in the vicinity.

Well maintained public area.

After getting my oil changed in Richmond , I was driving north towards home and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to visit Fredericksburg & Spotsylvania National Military Park as the location wasn’t that far off the highway. I started my journey at the Stonewall Shrine a little south of the National Park. Parking was a breeze even though I arrived when a tourist group began their tour. My trusty companion and I walked on the very dugouts the stonewall was built. Raw , real history in the flesh happened at the various spots I walked to learn more about our nations past wars . It wasn’t crowded and best of all it everything was free . A chance to learn about how the world thought and acted upon is never a disappointment . I couldn’t visit the cemetery for obvious reasons but I could feel a sense of pain and pride soldiers endured back then as a veteran myself who can relate to hardships . 10/10 recommended park to visit in Virginia

The National Park Service maintains this battlefield area. Inside of Fredericksburg proper, this space is a poignant memory of the brutality of the American Civil War. 105,000 men lost their lives here over the course of four battles. The Visitors Center has an informative, interactive museum, and a 20 minute video on the battles. After the video, you can join a tour with a park ranger who will walk you through the area pointing out important locations, people, and events. Plan on about an hour here if you take the tour. Or, you can walk it in about 20 minutes. Be sure to climb the short hill to the cemetery.

The most important Civil War site to visit besides Gettysburg. Truly heartwrenching. Seeing the original stone wall with the bullet holes, so thankful it has been preserved.

We loved it! Our Ranger Brett was amazing on the tour and was great with our 3 year old who is now a Junior Park Ranger!

Excellent. Well worth the visit. A museum of the usual high standard expected from the NPS, a film (nominal charge), a very fine ranger-led 35- minute short tour (no charge) which is easily extended by walking the trail on one’s own initiative. After a couple of hours doing this, there’s a driving tour outlined in the excellent leaflet. The staff are knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. One can learn a great deal about a very significant Civil War battle; altogether a day very well spent.

Very well organized alot of History to see, walk and gift shop was a pleasure to visit.

This park preserves one the bloodiest segments of a doomed battle, the sunken road. All along the trail are period structures (some with original battle damage), and carefully chosen period photographs depicting your current place on the battlefield. Excellent stories are written of, including that of Martha Stephens and endearing local matriarch, as well as General Cobb, blown apart just outside of her house. A superbly orated guided tour is led around the park at regular intervals, and seemingly free of charge. Its a reflective place to admire days gone by, enjoy nature, listen to some magnificent words, or to see first hand the site where so many gallantly fell.

Had a great time here. If you are interested in the civil war, its a must see.

Visited the day of the Illuminary at the cemetery. It was my first time at the battlefield and the cemetery and its a great site! My ancestor which is pictured here died after the battle from disease and is buried in the cemetery. It was humbling to visit where he was buried with other American soldiers!

Very nicely shaded with many interesting monuments & historical markers to read. Not busy. Plenty of parking & picnic tables. Other visitors were friendly. Nice little escape on the outskirts of the busy downtown area.

Theyve done a wonderful job updating the visitor center. I highly recommend a visit on your trip to the battlefield.

Great walking paths

Visiting historic Fredericksburg Virginia was very interesting. We went to the main visitor center just west of downtown. We did the walking tour and saw the famous stone wall at Mayres Heights. We also visited the store. The National Cemetery is located just above the center on the hill with a monument. A driving tour takes you through the Prospect Hill area of the battlefield.

Great historical spot. I could have spent a few more days going through the area.

Friendly an knowledgeable staff, patient with the middle school students. The center has enough attractive and informative displays to fill at least an entire day with learning. Poignant and moving and fascinating.

The most easily accessible battlefield of the four in the area - you could get a lot out of a pretty short visit or could spend hours on the walking tour and other points of interest. The visitor center has a good collection of exhibits spanning two floors. Outside, the self-guided walking tour is well-marked with a good number of informative signs. The walk along the sunken road is easy and gives a vivid picture of the famous battle there. Going up to Maryes Heights felt less essential to me from a historical standpoint, but when I went in the spring it was very pretty up there, with flowering trees in bloom and lots of birds.

I just love visiting here! There is so much American History and locals willing to share it and tell you all about it. Dont skip going to the visitors center.

What a great place to stop and learn about one of the Souths most famous military person during the Civil War. The park employee had some great insight into Stonewall Jackson.
