We pass this place on the back way to Tucson, I went to do the Google on Mr. Tom Mix and lo and behold my cellular dEvice had no circulation. Its a good thing there was shade and a table to stand on to keep the rattlers from gettin me. Mind your pace through the city of gold, aint just rattlers in the bushes.

This place is an example of why its good to get off the major highway and to sometimes take the side road to where youre heading. This is on the old road between Phoenix and Tucson. Not a lot to see, but just and interesting stop, and youd never see it if you stick to super slab. A little piece of American history. Tom Mix died at this spot. If you dont know who Tom Mix is, then this is a good opportunity to learn some history. Glad we stopped.

Nice memorial for the old movie cowboy star, billed as Hollywood’s first western movie star. who died in a tragic car accident here. He was driving to Phoenix from Tucson, speeding on the then gravel road and diverted around a construction crew & lost control of his convertible & hit the ditch. The luggage he had strapped down on his trunk, launched forward and basically internally decapitated the movie star.

Its a fine place to stop on the run between Florence and Oracle Junction, but lets be honest here. Its literally a memorial to a drunk driver. A guy who got drunk, drove through warning signs saying the road was under construction, crashed into a wash, and died. The fact that he was a movie star in his day really shouldnt overshadow that fact. Lets remember Tom Mix, another fatal DUI.

Visiting the Tom Mix memorial opened up a personal journey that stired the dreamer and child in me. Lets face it most havent heard of Tom Mix...and often know nothing or little about him. Tom Mix was linked to Wyatt Erp and many real life cowboys...which inspired his acting and little boys and dreamers who he tempted with the promise to become a cowboy just like him.So , what did I think of the memorial? The fact that someone goes out of the way to provide brochures and conteny to those who visit demonstrates that Tom Mix was more than an actor...he is a legend.Put this obscure site at the top of your must see sites.

Tom Mix Memorial is located on Hwy 79 (Pinal Pioneer Pkwy) between Oracle Junction and Florence. Behind the Memorial in the ramada is amazing literature on Tom Mix. There is plenty of room to pull of the Hwy with any size RV . Awesome place for a snack, lunch or dinner. Couple of grills and picnic tables. Amazing place to view sunrise and sunset .

Great memorial to an interesting man that shaped the Western movie genre. Someone puts out a copy of the newspaper report about the death of Tom Mix and the timeline leading up to his car accident that is on the side if the memorial. His death, just like his life, has many mysteries. The picnic tables and shade are very nice. No restroom facilities, just a nice place to stretch your legs and contemplate a different era.

This memorial is on the scenic part of Rt. 79 and is worth a stop to lean about one of our early Hollywood western stars. The desert location certainly sets the mood as well as provides an opportunity to walk among the cactus. There are even geocaches in the area. There are no facilities here other than a covered picnic table/bench and 2 stone BBQ grills, no bathrooms and no water.

Kind of sad that he ended his life and career this way, just another drunk driving accident for such a legend! A roadside kiosk with a covered picnic table with a copy of the article about his life, movie career, and death. Its a shame that the kiosk leaves out the fact that Tom Mix was a personal friend of Wyatt Earp, and was one of the pallbearers at his funeral. Tom Mix, along with Wyatt Earp, really wrote the end of the Old West at the turn of the century and all the legends and colorful characters that went along with. The county and state could do a little better, in that the papers depicting the newspaper article and his pictures from his movie career and the picture of him on his beloved Indian motorcycle, could be laminated and left out there, with rocks on top of them. Im surprised, frankly, that these items have not been stolen or taken by curious passers-by who can just drive up and see them on the picnic table and take off with them. It just shows how life is fleeting, and how unforgiving the silent desert is.
