I love the hiking trail here. I was a little disappointed that the lake was a bit dried up this time of year.... but the trail more than made up for that. It was a great walking trail with wonderful scenery and meanders through fields and wooded regions. Had to turn back early because I got a late start and ran out of daylight but will be back again to explore more. Also lots of great places to pitch a campsite. 9

Free camping Coconino National Forest. Verizon with good Android reception. Verizon not good iPhone or iPad reception. Marshall Lake is tiny but a few people put kayaks in the water. Lots of people biking. Some annoying ATVs sputting up dust. Large variety of campsites. Some down back in a beautiful valley. Just might need to hunt for it and go over some rocky terrain very slowly to reach these spots that are more off the beaten path. Beautiful Upper and Lower Lake Mary nearby. 15 to 20 minutes out of Flagstaff so easy to get supplies. Beautiful Ponderosa Pines and meadows. Some free range grazing cows (not many). Lots of ducks and other birds. Some deer. Observatory just up the hill from this lake. Also check out Amhust Lake nearby for more free camping. Of course since these arent campgrounds you need to pack it in and pack it out.

Marshall lake is always a great place to dry camp. I just wish all campers would pack out all their garbage and adhere to the no fire policy when in effect.

The road in is closed to motorized vehicles right now so you have to hike in. No one was out there. Perfect.

Camp sites are around this beautiful grassy pastoral area of Flagstaff. The colorful quiet of the sunset was magnificent.

Fun place to camp. There was no water in the lake and looked like there hadnt been any in ages. Maybe Im just insane. Good spot to get away and slow down when all of life is so fast and crazy.

This is a beautiful area with lots of open space and free camping. There are cows in the area, so be careful! Sometimes there is trash near fire pits near the main road, since it is a pretty popular area. On any holiday weekend there will be a ton of parties, but on less busy times it is a nice quiet place.
