The Farmington Bay Waterfowl Management Area covers an area of approximately 18,000 acres of land, wetland and lakes. It serves as a natural habitat for migratory and nesting shorebirds. This reserve is excellent for bird watching, photography and fall waterfowl hunting with over 200 documented species. Among the most attractive birds to be seen are the bald eagles, the American white pelican and the great blue heron. A very nice place to visit in every season, but winter brings the larger number of eagles and pelicans.

Its amazing that we have something this cool so close to home! There are are so many cool birds here. On our last visit we saw pelicans, many varieties of ducks, and lots of other birds, as well as a frog and a great big bass jump out of the water (no fishing, unfortunately). Take your time, enjoy the walk, and bring bug spray for the mosquitoes.

Great place to see local wildlife. You travel down the dirt road and back up. This area is closed from May to September because of nesting season. Eagles, Hawks, Herons, Mallards, pelicans, geese and swans are just a few that you can see.

This place is so great. The director who runs the visitor center is so friendly and willing to answer any question you have. We went right as it opened - 9:30am in the early fall - and we got to see the cranes starting to come in during their migration - it was so neat. The only complaint I have is with the mosquitos and biting gnats...make sure you come sprayed down as these bugs know no mercy! We will definitely be back again when the education center is up and running.

We went in autumn during duck hunting season. It was beautiful, but we were hesitant to walk around as we listened to all of the guns firing. We drove around during quickly got out to look, but that wasnt much fun and the kids grew bored quickly and dint understand why we couldnt walk more. Overall a disappointment, but only because of the hunters. Well try again in summertime!

So there are a couple things new families should consider before going. On the South (East) entrance, there is a little park with paved trails, a jetty to fish on, and a public restroom. There is access to the levys here but is hunted from August to February, then open for a short time, and then closed on March 1st.In the North entrance there is a Main Center (under reconstruction as of 2-2017) and a nature trail. The nature trail is open year round and is safe from hunters. Currently you need to park all the way out by the road and walk in because of the construction but it is still open to pedestrians.
