I booked a tour for my husband and his family that are in town. We had one person that was unable to come. They gave us a full refund for her. Yesterday they went and had a fantastic time. My husband enjoyed this experience more than our other sled dog experience. He appreciated the private tour, spending more quality time with family. We would recommend Black Spruce for sure.

This was an incredible experience. It was raining on and off the day of our hike, and the owners communicated with us about our options to reschedule or push through. Luckily they had some raincoats and boots for some members of our party. We had such a good time playing with the dogs, the puppies, and hiking. On the hike, the dogs continually circle around the group and dart in and out of the forest, its quite funny. The owners also let me accomplish my dream of drowning in a puppy puddle. I would recommend Black Spruce to anyone, and if you are a dog person, do not miss it.Also, if you have any interest in dog sledding, animal behavior, or even living off the grid in Alaska, the owners are a fountain of knowledge and answered all of our questions. We loved this experience and would go back in a heartbeat.

We were there for a mushing experience and have enjoyed every part of it! If you have 2 people in a group one gets to stand on the back like a musher and the other gets to simply enjoy the ride (did I mention you can swap places to try both??). It’s the second dog Sledding experience and the best one by far! You get to pet lovely dogs and take awesome pictures. These awesome puppers do annual race so you can be sure they’re experts on what they do! Lovely staff great experience...couldn’t recommend this place enough!

Upon driving onto the property, my husband and I were met by a frenzy of excited dogs. What a welcome!!! Because we were the only guests (it being shoulder season) Jeff and Katti Jo’s tour unfolded so organically and naturally that it felt, for us, more like a visit with new friends and their athletic team...all 50 of them. Everything about the experience: Jeff and Katti Jo’s story, each dog whom you come in contact with, the wonderful wintry landscape, excite all your senses and warm your heart. Highly recommended!

There are a lot of awesome things to do in Alaska - but this is for sure one of them. Katie and Jeff are amazing people who have a unique way of life and are willing to share it with visitors like us. The dogs are awesome and they love their job! It’s so fun watching the dogs get excited when they load up the sled. If you love dogs, you’ll LOVE this place. I thought all dogs went to heaven... they might just go to Fairbanks, Alaska.

Just after Labor Day this year, my wife and I were in Fairbanks and wanted to do something just a bit out of the normal touristy things. We had seen some of the dog sled ads in the local magazine and just Googled a few. Black Spruce seem to come up over and over with great reviews. Not knowing much about what we going to see, we really just wanted to see the dogs maybe take a quick tour and be done. What we got from Jeff and Katie at Black Spruce was just over the top and actually made us fans looking forward to the Iditarod! We just werent interested in a run with the dogs, we value more learning and just seeing things that are new to us. Jeff and Katie took over an hour and sat down to explain the history, lifestyle and dogs with us in and answered every question we had. To be honest, it was like they were treating us as family and we were just strangers that drove up to their place! We spent time with the dogs, took plenty of pics and just had a sensational time with the them and their pups. Best part for me is that I will now watch the iditarod and have someone I am rooting for. To be honest, we haven t even ruled out a return trip to see them off at the start of the race. Good people deserve good things and Jeff and Katie are exactly that. Do not pass this opportunity up if you are in the area. 5 Stars!! Sean and Sharon Ferbrache!

Im not a big reviewer, but this was an absolutely fantastic experience! Not a typical commercial tourist tour; rather, a genuine step into the lives of the people and dogs of competitive mushing. Jeff and Katies passion for the sport, Alaska and above all, their dogs, is remarkable. If you are a lover of dogs, history or of competition you absolutely must book a tour. Dont let the price deter you as it is an experience that cant be replicated! Please give Tundra a hug for me. He finished the 2019 Iditarod at ELEVEN years old and is still pulling strong at twelve.

Simply the best activity we did Im Fairbanks. The dogs are just fantastic. They are not regular house dogs, so they can be very jumpy and excitable, but for all the good reasons. Wish I stayed close so that I can visit again. The guide was spectacular too. She made sure we had a nice and safe time. She taught us how to secure the dogs to the sled, and everything about dog sledding, how the dogs are raised, etc.I would totally recommend this to anyone visiting Fairbanks and are in for a great adventure!

Dog sledding has been on the top of my bucket list for as long as I can remember. Black Spruce beyond exceeded my expectations, even in -15 degree weather! The dogs are so happy and loved, it’s apparent that these mushers live their entire lives for their team of dogs and it’s so special. The scenery is beautiful as you either sit behind the dogs or stand and help mush. We had the best time and would 100% recommend this incredible experience and very professional and reputable company.

There is a reason why these guys are the most and the highest reviewed mushers in Fairbanks.- They were very good with driving directions (emailed us the instructions as GPS NAV gets sketchy in Fairbanks)- Theyve a well established setup with enclosures for puppies, heated tents for guests and individual kennels for the dogs themselves. The setup really looked impressive from the onset of our arrival!- The handlers (Jeff and Co) are very friendly and were very enthusiastic in enlightening us about the culture of dog mushing.- The activity itself which is around 45 mins to 1 hour was so much fun. Jeff was constantly interacting with us while piloting the sled and taking us through a trail that is so beautiful that words wont do it enough justice.I know there are other operators in Fairbanks and Im sure they might be good but I would recommend these guys without a doubt based on the experience Weve had. They only focus on mushing and not other activities like snowmobile or ice fishing etc, which is indicative of how dedicated they are to their dogs. Book well in advance of your trip to Fairbanks and you wont regret for choosing them over other people who might accommodate you on short notice!!

The owners and staff have such a passion for what they do and their dogs are their family. Its as hands on as you want it to be. If you want, you can put the harness on the dogs and hook up them up for the mushing experience. The dogs are very friendly and you get to learn a lot about how they live and train for the iditarod. I highly recommend this activity for all.

If youre in Alaska for any reason you have to do this! It is so much fun and a bucket list item that you have to check off! When you first arrive you got into a heated tent type structure where the guide/musher gives you the low down on dog sledding, the two most famous races and their own experiences. Luther was our guide and was just awesome. We go to meet the dogs, Neptune being my favorite! After that, he explained the sleds, safety procedures, and how to stand on the back sled. During the ride he explained more about the dogs, ensuring both sitting and standing passengers could hear him. I so badly want to go again, it was so much fun and ranks right up there as one of my best birthday experiences I have ever had.

This was my second time to use Black Spruce. First was with a coworker in Dec of 16. This time (Dec 17) I brought my wife. The first time was a night trip in 2016. The northern lights was cool to see but the sled trip was in the dark so not much to see. My wife and I chose a day trip and it far exceeded our expectations. Jeff was our musher and shared a ton of information about mushing, the dogs, and racing. It was great to see the amazing views along the trail. The dogs were fantastic and friendly with lots of personality and boy do they love to run. I highly recommend Black Spruce if you want a quality experience. A group of five of us went on this adventure. Jeff and Katie were so welcoming. They introduced us to the dogs, with which we got to pet and interact. Then Katie and Jeff talked to us about the history of dog sledding and their part in the tradition (as well as their participation in the Iditarod and Yukon Quest races.) Then we helped hook the dogs up to the sled, which was actually a 6-person four-wheeler ATV. Once the dogs were in place, we were off! The dogs pulled us deep in to the Alaskan wilderness. We stopped three times to water and rest the dogs, experiencing the area and petting/praising the dogs each time. Once we returned to the camp we visited the puppy pen and were swarmed and mobbed by all of the Alaskan Husky pups! It was a great experience and Id strongly recommend it to those visiting Fairbanks or Denali.

Today is our last day in Alaska and the trip has been incredible so far and people have been SO nice. Unfortunately, today we had a terrible experience with Black Spruce Dog Sledding. We searched a lot and ended up choosing them because of the good reviews, even though their price was almost twice as much as the others. So today we left the hotel 90 min before our scheduled time (its supposed to be 45 minutes away). They have directions and my friend was looking at them, but they were three pages long and her phone only load the first one, which ended with now youre 30min away. So, we thought it was only to drive straight ahead until we got there. This was Murphy Dome Rd, and we ended up at the observatory, which was full of soft snow and the car got stuck. My friend opened their page again (because we were obviously at the wrong place) and realized our mistake. We sent them a message saying we were lost and stuck and they called us. Well, they called to tell us we lost our reservation because we were far away and would not make it there on time, said they could not help us (I didnt even ask) and that I should wait because at some time some local would probably appear and help us (!!!!) or I should try to call the insurance if I had one. All this said in a very snarky way. Then I asked if we could reschedule and she said no. I asked about refunds, which she replied with No, we dont do refunds for people who dont follow directions., in a very condescending way. Mind you, we were far away, in a place very isolated (we were there for about 30min and not a single car drove by) and in -11°F weather. Im not stupid, I know it wasnt her problem and we would not get there on time, I understand losing it and the no refund. My issue is with the complete lack of empathy and humanity this person showed. Not ONCE she asked if we were okay, told us how to get to the correct place from there or anything at all. The whole point of the call was to say we lost the tour and our money, in a very snarky way. She could have said the same thing without being so rude. After a lot of shoveling (with a tiny shovel), I got us out of there and made it to the correct place (we got there 50min late, the tour was 90min long). There we met this guy, who is the owner and husband of the woman who called us. He told us the same thing she did, pretty much told us we didnt make it there because we were dumb and he couldnt do anything about it. Then when we talked about the instructions to get there he said a lot of people get lost and they try to improve it, but it is what it is and its not his problem if people cant read them. Again, my problem is not with missing the tour or the money (though yes, I was upset because we were excited about it and now we wont get to do it at all because today is our last day), its with how they made us feel like garbage. Im a business owner too, I deal with people all the time and I deal with a lot of dumb stuff, but Id never, ever treat anyone like this. I just hope they treat their dogs better than their costumers.

After we spent a bit of time getting familiar with our furry friends and talking to the couple who runs this place, we went on a hike with 30 something puppies along with some large ones. The hike was not strenuous, more like a nice afternoon stroll and thats exactly what we were looking for. I was amazed to get to know the owners, they were very sweet and friendly and I really felt they were proud of their hard work and everything they have achieved. The place is also very neat and clean, they have some nice souvenirs for you to bring home to. My guide Riley was a great person to experience this with. Well worth the visit and would recommend this. Thank you Riley and the wonderful dogs

I visited Black Spruce Dog Sledding today with my girlfriend and we had a great time. This is our first visit to Alaska and this was definitely a highlight of the trip. Jeff took us on a great sled ride, was a friendly and likable guy, clearly knows his stuff and was patient and considerate with us. Meeting the dogs was a wonderful experience. The location was an easy drive from Fairbanks in a rental car with some awesome scenery and views. I’d recommend this to anyone.

This was the highlight of our trip to Alaska! KattiJo and Jeff were so amazingly kind and informative. The dogs were adorable & its clear how well-kept & happy they are. It was SO interesting to learn about their off-grid location as well as about the exciting tradition they keep. The experience was so immersive as they let us help harness up the dogs and were continually encouraging & helping with photos. The adventures they told us about were so vivid that they fel like our own and the ride was a dream come true. If you are around Fairbanks and you dont visit Black Spruce Dog Sledding, you are totally missing out.

I was up in Fairbanks for work, and at the last minute I tried to book a dog sledding tour. Black Spruce was very helpful and had availability. When I got there, my guide Lindsey greeted me and led me to the warming tent, where she supplemented my winter gear with any pieces that I was missing. She then took me out to meet the dogs. All of the dogs were extremely playful and excited to meet you. Lindsey took me to the sled and showed me how the sled operated, and then showed me how to harness the dogs to the sled. She even let me harness a few of the dogs. Once we got going on the trail, it was so much fun to sled through the snow-covered forest. I would highly recommend this tour for anyone who is looking to do a dog sledding tour while they are in Alaska. If you get Lindsey as a guide, you are in good hands. She was an excellent guide when I was there.

Black Spruce Dogsledding tours is the one for you, if you want to experience dog mushing at its finest. The setting is and the dogs are spectacular, bring your camera! Our tour guide, Lindsey, was fun, knowledgeable and loved sharing the many facets of dog sledding with us. We had the opportunity to meet the dogs, harness them, drive a sled and learn about the sport of dog mushing. The dogs were happy, healthy and friendly. They really love what they do! Lindsey and the dogs made the experience one of a kind and one we will remember for a long time. Thank you!

We had a blast dog sledding with Black Spruce. As others have mentioned they do have some winter clothing which is helpful, but be sure to bring as much as you can as they do not have everything to outfit you with. After getting geared up you will have plenty of time to hang out with the dogs, take pictures, and learn about their operation as well as your guides own racing experiences. Once the meet and greet is over you harness the dogs up and away you go. Winter is a perfect time for couples as they limit the tours to 2 people so you will have a private outing. We had Riley as our guide and we thoroughly enjoyed meeting and learning all about his race team. Overall great experience and would recommend to anyone looking for dog sledding in the Fairbanks area.

This was the highlight of my first trip to Alaska. Mandy was an awesome guide and very knowledgable. She was also very accommodating with my aunt who wasnt able to stand on the sled, so she sat the entire ride and had a blast. The dogs were super friendly and very well trained. If Im ever in Fairbanks again, this is definitely going back on my list of things to do!

Mushing was hands down my favorite activity when visiting Fairbanks! Noah shared his experiences with the Iditarod and his team of dogs were very excited to go for a run. You can tell they live for this adventure. I highly recommend booking a tour with Black Spruce. And if you see Cleo, Qarth, or Hermione, be sure to say hello.

My wife and I loved the experience!! Jeff was fantastic.. he gave us a lot of information on mushing, patiently answered all of our questions always with a big smile on his face, helped us gear up for the ride, and gave us plenty of time to play with and get acquainted with the dogs. We also helped leash the dogs to the sleds. The dogs themselves were so friendly and were overjoyed that were petting them. The sledding itself was exhilarating and a lot of fun. Overall, a must do if youre in the area.

Loved, loved, LOVED this experience!! Katti and Jeff were so welcoming and answered all my questions. It was obvious that they love what they do as much as the dogs do! It was awesome to be able to go on a walk with all the puppies and witness a feeding (which was quite hilarious), then be able to help harness the adults. The sled ride was a good distance...not too short or too long. It was very hands on and I would go back every week if I could!! Thank you, Katti and Jeff. It was a fabulous evening!

This experience was by far the most exciting and happiest event of our trip to Alaska. The kids (by that I mean 26-35 year olds) couldnt stop talking about the day for the rest of the trip. The price, the guides, the dogs, even the thorough directions were exceptional.

My wife really wanted to see sled dogs while we were in Alaska. So she made reservations at Black Spruce to take a tour of the place and a dog sled ride in the woods. This is a husband and wife operation that is run on their property. The dog area is next to their house. It was a little trek into the woods, but we got there with no problem. This couple really care about their dogs and took lots of time to explain what they do and answered any questions people asked. Our party of three was with another party of two so there were 5 of us for the morning. I think that is the max that they do, I dont think they take more than that at one time, but I could be mistaken. Check with them. I am not a dog person, but I really had a great time and learned a lot bout dog sledding and the work involved as well as the cost. The ride through the woods was a lot of fun. The dogs pulled th 6 of us on a ATV, except for the uphill, the engine was shut off and the dogs pulled us all the way. You get to harness up the dogs and get ready for the ride. They also have puppys that they let you hold and play with. Who does not like puppys. Jeff actually ran and finished the last two Iditarod dog sled race and last year fisished 15th. This was a great experience that I would never have chosen if not for my wifes love of dogs. I would put this place on a must see list for any trip to Alaska.

WOW - WOW - WOW. Im always hesitant to say once in a lifetime experience but this definitely was. We were fortunate enough to have just the two of us on our tour however with a maximum of four people it would have been fine with another two. I like the fact the tour was small - we got to have some good bonding time with the dogs and Riley our host was incredibly knowledgeable and able to give us so much information about the breed - history, bloodline, and all the races they go in for. If you are not keen on dogs - why do it? I was having doggy withdrawal as mine were home in NZ so getting some good patting and hug time was amazing. You get to harness up the dogs which is awesome and both parts, sitting in the front sled and standing on the back sled is so much fun. My partner was up back at first which was a bit faster and he ended up coming off the sled but there was amazing powder and he actually really enjoyed it and said he hoped I came off haha I didnt - its a bit like skiing actually same principles of balance. Also - we stopped part way and I was able to do my first ever snow angel which was in pristine deep new powder. Apparently I was the first ever to do a snow angel and we both did one - I am sure I wont be the last. All in all it was such a fantastic experience - I bought a commemorative t-shirt and also had so many memories and photos and videos - those dogs are amazing. This place was amazing!
