I’ve been skiing here for about 7 1/2 years and I’ve had a great experience. They have a great progressive slopes for new skiers and snowboarders. Great terrain for park rats such as myself. The employees are super friendly and always have the ability to make me laugh. The food is awesome. (I recommend the funnel fries) Anyways, if you’re looking to learn how to ski, sundown is a great option.

This is a great place to go skiing when you dont want the long drive out west. We drive up from Missouri which is only about 5 hours away. It is a great place to learn how to ski on their bunny slope and gradually move up from their little lift to their larger lifts. They have a good variation of slopes and trails, which makes for a fun day. They also have a nice area in lodge to have a picnic style lunch if you bring your own lunch.

First time went this year ordered two sandwiches and they never got them after 45min after going to bar and complaining finally was helped and offered a refund or our food. Then you closed on February 13 for the cold which was a crock. The weather wasnt even that bad. Drove all the way there. Then you opened Friday even though it was colder. bS go Chestnut! If your even thinking of going here dont waste your time or money!!!

Not exactly a mountain but the best youre going to get in Iowa! It is a very large hill with a beatiful view of the surrounding countryside. Plenty of lifts and runs. Have a big and small terrain park with a great assortment of items to do tricks on as well as some big jumps. Lodge has food and is very toasty and homey feeling.

Great skiing, especially for the kids! And they love night skiing under the lights. I am thoroughly impressed with their snow making ability. Will be open and great snow, even if the landscape is brown the whole way there. Kid friendly staff and facilities, my son got hurt and they took great care of him. Lift tickets and rentals add up but the equipment is good. Can bring your own food! This saves a bunch. I have noticed if you do purchase food it isnt too far out of line. (But the new coffee place could back down the prices a bit.) I hope to go back soon!

Ian and Emma were very kind getting me set up at the front desk. A man said he would be praying for me, as it was my first time skiing in a few years, and then a worker named Jonathan said hed take me down the hill. We went down a few times and he pushed me (not literally) to go down a blue hill, which I would never have attempted otherwise. The chai lattes are also fantastic @MountainTop cafe.A great day!

Great Ski School for kiddos!!! Our 7 year old learned to ski in 2 hours and could ride the lift by the end of the day!The food is beyond horrible and predictably expensive. GROSS!The lift attendants could also be more attentive. They were pretty slow to react when my daughter and I were struggling to learn our approach to the lift. They should have seen us coming a mile away!

Sundown is a great place to ski. The lift operators are friendly. They do an amazing job with grooming. Sundown takes pride in making it the best skiing experience around. Cant wait for the next ski season at Sundown. Also, their fb page gives great snow reports and updates when theyll be closing due to inclement weather which is super convenient.

We had a great time here! It was a very busy day, but we still waited only a few minutes in lift lines. There are enough green & blue runs to have variety when coming down the hill. Skiers of differing skill levels can split up and easily meet again. There are only two black runs, which was ok with our family, and there are two terrain parks. Dining area was crowded, but they had quite a few choices and good was reasonably priced. Staff in all areas were friendly and helpful. Well be returning!

When it comes to Midwest skiing, this place is as good as it gets. No, you wont get a ton of vertical here, and yes it can be freezing cold and icy conditions, but honestly what else do you expect? They have a fun terrain park, enough vertical to at least make the runs feel worth it, and the price is very reasonable. I prefer Sundown over its neighbor across the river.

Amazing experience! Where some ski resorts tend to have very similar slopes, Sundown offers a truly different experience with each course. Beginners and experts alike can enjoy skiing/snowboarding here, and the longer-than-average courses ensure that your time is spent skiing, not riding the ski lift.

This was my 11 year old sons first time skiing and we decided to visit Sundown. We arrived about an hour and 15 minutes after they opened. They were out of ski poles and helmets already. Overall though, my son had a ball and picked up skiing very quickly. So quickly that he found the 90 minute group lesson boring. We will most likely return but getting there early is key if your wanting all the equipment that comes with the rental.

Sundown is your typical Midwest ski resort. When not too crowded, it is a pretty good place to ski. They have a healthy mix of easy to moderate runs. I would not call any of them overly difficult, especially if you have ever skied out west.Prices are very reasonable. From the lift ticket, to rentals (they even rent ski pants and jackets for $5 each plus a deposit), to the food in the restaurant, it is all pretty reasonable for a ski resort.

If you live in the Midwest, you probably have a pretty crappy ski resort in your area. I live in St.Louis and our ski resort is one of the worst ski resorts. It is always slushy and watery, definitely not a good place to even practice skiing. Sundown mountain is so refreshing. It is well maintained, it has slopes for all levels to enjoy. The instructors here are amazing. I just love this place. This is the only reason we come to Iowa every winter!

Lets be honest, when you go to this resort, dont expect to be waist-deep in powder. This is Iowa skiing! And for the great plains, this is a cozy little resort a short distance away from Iowa City. Rentals are quick and easy, but there can be lines when waiting to get your boots fitted to your skis. Keep in mind, they dont offer demos, but the skis you get are good enough for a day on the slopes. Expect runs to be short, no longer than a minute or two. The lifts also take a while to get to the top of the hill. The snow made by Sundown was a bit icy the last time I went (during Febuary, it was a couple degrees above freezing) but you should expect this when the temperature is above 32. For lunch, I advise you bring your own food, as prices are steep. But the environment is nice. From the North Lodge, there is a great view from the balcony, and there is good service. Overall, a great place to ski for a day, and while it might not be up to par to resorts in the Rockies and other mountains, its the best youll get in Iowa.

My wife and I went there this past weekend and she is a beginner, only her second time, and we had a lot of fun.
