Came to celebrate the centennial anniversary of the most celebrated horse of American racing, others may be more famous and surrounded by more pretentious monuments on private estates full of big hats and mint juleps. This horse and I have love of things greater than money. This grave marker stands in a beloved, picnic loving, Park in working-class neighborhood hundreds of miles from opulance. This horse was sold to the US Calvary so I consider him the most American triple crown winner of them all. Thank you for your service Sir Barton, your technically an army veteran! a happy story for once. This grave reminds me of a life that lends perspective. I cant help but think of all the warhorses that were culled from the heard in Europe to the unspeakable cruelties of WWI the year of his big break. Or while Siring of super colts for our troops- (good work if you can get it), how folks would within a few years own a motorized carriage, instead of a horse. What that must have done for people, and what this marker really means in milestones of mankind. I wanted to think you have a nuzzle to a nearby by fence post as the first transcontinental races would pull right past your pasture - no roads yet, of course that was earlier than your stay in douglas- but this is the last chapter of Americas Equine romance outside of the society pages. I hope hope you still enjoyed oats and that fine Wyoming breeze, if there is a heaven for you, Douglas cant be much of a change. And that makes me smile biggest of all.. sir burton, we need a smile these days. I am sure to leave you a horse treat whenever Im in town and tell my students about you every chance I can get. Which will extend your memory another 100 years with luck. Washington Park is a wonderful place to take a boisterous two-year-old who loves playgrounds. Always happy to pay our respects for a nice ride, with a joyous weeeeeeee!
