Cool place. This free overlook has friendly, knowledgeable volunteers and telescopes aimed at a rocky outcrop abundant with sea lions and harbor seals on the ocean. Sometimes there are elephant seals and whales as well. A bathroom up the road and cliff trails leading to the beach round out the visit.

This is a small park just off the main park road with no user fee and plenty of parking. We had no trouble parking the motorhome. There is a viewing deck with a good railing. Bring your binoculars and camera to see a seal colony of the reef off shore. The day we visited Oregon Parks Wildlife Tales was there with two rangers and spotting scopes. With their help we saw a lot of the colony and learned about the different wildlife on the reef. Without binoculars or a spotting scope you will not be able to see much as the colony is well off the shore.

The southern Oregon coast is a special place and this overlook is on the heart of it. It is well worth the short trip down and back this dead end coastal road. And if you make the trip in December, dont miss a stop to see the lights at Shore Acres.

We visited the Simpson Reef Overlook after going through Shore Acres State Park. It was loaded with Seals and Sea Lions. When we were there in September we also observed the whales migrating. There were volunteers set up with spotting scopes that provided a great view of the wildlife. If you don’t have a spotting scope, a good pair of binoculars will work. The Overlook is just a few minutes south of Shore Acres.
