What a great find! Camp sites were clean and camp hosts were very helpful and informative. They gave us great pointers on where to eat, where to see the best sunset and what hiking trails would be best to hike. Id gladly stay again.

Great places, gets a little pack when the sunset is closer to set, but overall its nice ! Many people swim in the water not to far because its very string tides. Some of the water is a bit dirty but only on the far ends of it. Sand has lots of tree bits... but it doesnt seem to be harmful since kids and adults walk without shoes or sandals. No masks are worn but many keep their distant. Did not stay for the sunset so I have no comment on that end.

My family and I stopped here for a few hours. The hiking was good and there are plenty of activities available: swimming, kayaking, volleyball and basketball. The bay itself is shallow at low tide, but good for wading. The terrain is quite interesting and close to other state parks.

The campground is nice. Each site is fenced off with hedges. It seems to be very popular with families containing many children. The hedges are nice too stop kids from riding bikes through your site. The beach is also nice. We liked the view at the beach. The water is more calm because it is in a bay.

We are from Idaho, we camp along the Oregon coast every couple of years. Usually we wing it and stay wherever we can get in but this year we decided to make reservations. We googled best campgrounds on the Oregon coast and decided to camp places we can stay at least 3 days. So this was on the trip. We had a blast. The Oregon coast Id beautiful, the hiking is phenomenal for all levels. We hiked around the campgrounds in the mornings, hit the cove for paddle boards in the afternoons, sunsets on the beach or off the trails at Shore Acres.Of special interest was the number and diversity of the hiking trails. Such a great time seal watching, hiking and checking out the botanical gardens. Coos Bay is more of a working coastal town vs a tourist town so the shopping/seafood is better, less expensive and less pretentious then like Newport or Lincoln City

Beautiful spot on the southern Oregon coast with a great campground and fantastic beach and tide pools tucked away in Sunset Bay. The sand gently slopes into the water and the Bay is totally protected, so the water is relatively warm and calm in the summer... quite unique in the Oregon coast. Picturesque sandstone cliffs topped with shore pines frame the beach and a few small sea rocks add interest to the view out to the open ocean. It wasnt particularly crowded when we visited, so made for a good coronavirus getaway. Most of the sites at the campground are well spaced and have some level of privacy. Its forested and very green in there. Walking distance from the beach along a paved path. Bathroom buildings were clean and in good repair.

Beautiful beach. A couple of seals where bobbing and hunting. Quite a few people who are not practicing social distance, not near as many a few days ago. Experienced the fog rolling over the top of the trees to envelope the beach. Amazing!! My Big, Big Daddy is an awesome artist and Creator.! So loved my time there. Oh yes, great bathrooms, a bonus!

The redwood tree roots that expose at low tide are one of the most magical things I have ever seen. One of my favorite spots. All the kids loved running around in the flats of these bays. Not too crowded when we went. Definitely worth the fee for a few hours to experience something very unique.

This is a small cove but dont let it fool you. Be careful of sneaker waves! Ample parking, restrooms and plenty of tide pools, swimming and sandcastle building to keep your little ones busy. Stay until sunset for some beautiful photos and memory making. Once again, watch for sneaker waves. Use common sense when on the beaches here on the Coast.

Sunset Bay State Park is beautiful from land and sea. From the beach, the tide rolls gently on protected by the cove, with plenty of sand to relax or play depending on your objective. From the ocean the beauty is raw and powerful, with the surf crashing against the coves protective barrier.Mid-week was a great time to visit, the solitude amplifying the serenity of the place.Weather was exceptional for October, but inclement weather could be a factor the views and physical comfort.

Wow! What a hidden gem this place is. A state park that was so beautiful we could hardly believe it. So many trails close by to walk on and extremely kind Camp hosts! Firewood is sold for $5 a bundle and they even deliver it straight to your campsite. We had blackberries growing at the back of our campsite and delighted in picking fresh berries. We had a cute little bunny you also like to visit our site. Chipmunks and squirrels are in abundance as well. Absolutely loved this place!Reservations in advance are a must! We had space 35 in Loop B and we were delighted with it!

Br
Review №55

The image of the campsite looked fine, but was misleading. These sites are very close together, and it felt more like living in a homeless camp than actually camping. The site was poorly maintained, when we arrived there was old dog poop and fruit snacks wrappers in the site. There were no fires allowed at all, which made for a cold and miserable trip. Since its 30 degrees colder at this campground than it is in the next town over, its not worth camping here without a heat source, so do yourself a favor and dont go during fire season. There were also groups of unattended kids and their bicycles everywhere, blocking the road to cars several times. The bathrooms are hit or miss for toilet paper so be prepared to bring your own. We actually gave up the money we had already paid, packed up early and left (and will not be coming back). Two stars for location, there were some beautiful viewpoints and beaches nearby.

Beautiful sunny day at the park. It has beautiful grounds and well kept trails. The trees shelter the grounds from too much wind. On the trails, there are beautiful sites to see around every corner. A little dangerous for young kids to be left unattended - Steep bluffs with unsupported ledges. There are several little coves with amazing rock outcroppings.

Our stay at Sunset Bay State Park was an enjoyable time. With a short visit to the Charleston Visitors Center we discovered that there are plenty of thinks to do and see. With a Tide Chart in hand were able to enjoy the Tide Pools @ Sunset Beach. A short drive took us to South Slough National Estuarine Resesrch Reserve; Charleston Marine Life Center, Cape Argo Lighthouse, Shore Acres State Park whic occupies the magnificent bluff-top site of an old lumber baron’s estate, where you can enjoy a grand formal gardens and amazing ocean views. There are several great places to enjoy a locally caught seafood meal. The park itself is very old and not in very good shape. Our visit was in the middle of May so I suspect that they will be more active with freshening up the sites soon. The Stat Park staff were very enthusiastic and engaging. Overall, we had a nice time.

Sunset Bay is the single most amazing place I have ever gone camping. The rangers are helpful and kind to everyone there. The short walk to the bay, by way of a cool underground tunnel, is only about 10 minutes away from the D loop. Other loops like A, B, and C are only 6 minutes away. There is a special trail in C loop that will lead you to a highway, once you are there you need to cut through another part of wood. Last time I was there, me and my family places stick arrows to point people that came there in the right direction.

Tent sites are rather small in most cases, and the tent pads most dirt or gravel. There is plenty of beautiful, rugged scenery and easy access to some good paddling and surfing locations. Within an easy drive of Coos Bay and North Bend. Restrooms have hot water and showers, and sites have fire rings. There are ranger talks.

We traveled north on Beaver Hill Road from Bullard, Or to this park and wished we had stayed on Hwy 101 to North Bend instead. Beaver Hill Road is very narrow, twisty, has no turnouts, and goes through active logging region. The state park campground is right off Cape Arago Hwy. The beach is an easy walk from the campground on a level trail. Sunset Bay is shallow so when the tide is out the bay is partially mud flats but also sandy with great views. We did not find a boat ramp on the bay. Some campsites had steep hills for the first several feet others were nice and level. The gate house was staffed, and the park is in fairly good repair. There are some old tables that need to be replaced. There are high bushes between sites providing privacy There is a nice, indoor interpretive center in the campground with daily programs offered in July when we visited. There is a network of hiking trails nearby but no information on distances or difficulty. There are additional day use state parks close by that are worth visiting – Shore Acres offers fabulous views and a wonderful botanical garden; Simpson Reef offers views of a seal colony off shore.
