St. James Cathedral came into my life unexpectedly a few years ago after Id driven into the city to meet with an old friend visiting from the east coast. I had no idea how stressed out he was at the time. We spent the morning on a long walk which was like tiptoeing through endless eggshells. Eventually he just began screaming at me and we parted ways. I was discouraged. I took the train back to the general area where we were staying and walked a long time trying to find the exact location. By the time I reached St. James I was physically and spiritually exhausted. Thankfully the sanctuary was open and well-lit..for the moment, fairly empty. I sat in back several minutes letting my tears out and asking for guidance, listening the best I could. Then, energy renewed, I cleaned up and found my way home. Thank you so much for being there.

Beautiful cathedral with wonderful acoustics. For the Anglo Catholics among us, it is Rite II, but as far as this Requiem Mass is concerned, it was very revential and beautifully executed.

Hands down one of the best musical experiences youll ever have as music plays such an important role in the episcopal church. The clergy are accepting and diverse and youre free to come as you are and made welcome. There is a wonderful coffee hour after the service and many events held here throughout the week. A must see for anyone visiting or living in Chicago. The Cathedral is beautiful as well and has been around for a long time with a rich and varied history.

I have been a member for several years after visiting for 1 year. We have found a church home filled with glorious music-filled worship, challenging preaching, committed outreach, friendly people, chorister school as well as other programs for children, social action events, etc. Come, visit, worship, serve. See if we can be your place of worship, service, and learning.

Older church. You can see some burn marks from the Chicago fire. Victorian, timbered construction. Really nice looking organ. Pews are comfortable. I would like to go to an Evensong here sometime. I think they also have classical music concerts here. I dont know if this is High Church or Low Church though.

Breath-taking Cathedral in historic American Arts and Crafts style. Watching children participate in and lead the 9am family service is inspiring. Appreciate the welcoming hospitality before and after services.

All are welcome. A beautiful old church open most days for all to come and see. They have a WW1 tribute and a short walking tour inside. Free to enter with donations welcome. If you are lucky you’ll be greeted with heavenly music from their organ and/or piano!

I absolutely love this Cathedral! A warm and sacred space filled with a beautifully diverse mix of people. The world-class musicians, beautiful Anglican liturgy, and incredibly welcoming community make this an easy place to call home. Id definitely encourage a visit if youre in town over a weekend!

Another of the many friendly and welcoming churches of Chicagoland. The church is as lovely as the services. Of special interest to my readers: the good people of St. James host a community dinner the 1rst Tuesday of each month, and a community luncheon the 3rd Sunday of each month. The food is plentiful, the servers are a delight--as are the opportunities to meet interesting and diverse people.

This is our home for Windy City Performing Arts concerts and we couldnt have had a better experience. Great space I just wish the acoustics were better. (Not a complaint about the staff or experience just the sound characteristics...this is a choir nerd complaint)

Stunningly beautiful church with worship services to match, running the gamut from quiet morning prayer to full-choir Eucharist. Diverse congregation where all are truly welcome. Youll find gay and straight, families and singles, life-long Episcopalians and seekers. Its been my church home for about 8 years and I love the many ways I experience God through prayer, action and fellowship.

While visiting Chicago, we had the opportunity to attend the 9A service. This service focuses on the children and was great to have our church members of tomorrow so involved today.Talked with the Sr. Warden who was very informative and helpful making us feel welcome. The history behind this place is sensational from the spiritual and humanity perspective. If you ever have the opportunity to visit, please research the history first. It will give you a head start on every piece of history you will see. Would add pics but it just doesnt demonstrate how beautiful St. James is.We will be back next year and attend the 11A service when the organ and choir will participate. Can only imagine how beautiful that will be!
