The ride is long and slow enough to enjoy the scenery. I was not expecting the height at the top of the mountain, very very steep!! My knees were shaking. But the view from up top was breathtaking! So worth the time and money. My husband loved the wall inside of the shop showing the old trains. Even my two teenage kids were impressed and really enjoyed it.

The views and riding the Incline Railway was amazing!! At the top, it wasnt communicated well where everything was. Make sure to walk around the neighborhood at the top, and see the sites. The battlefield, the historic houses, etc. I believe the See 7 States view is up there as well.

Fun ride on the train, steep wasnt the word for it. Great view. Other than that, not much to do. Not enough historical information at the station. You have to go to the park to get that. Doesnt tell you that or provide maps or signs or trams to other locations. Better off driving the hill. I will say the rail staff were courteous and professional. A big ok.

Really amazing views! It was nice to try during our first time in the area. The view from the observation area was really awesome too! I was disappointed that a lot of the local parks were closed. The staff was very welcoming and did a great job of making sure every one had a good experience. Recommend getting a ticket a head of time. You will need a mask during the ride and there is no air conditioning so make sure the mask isnt too thick. You sit at a distance from others during the ride. There is an audio recording of the history of the incline and the safety updates. There is more history at the top and a great viewing platform!

Once you get to the top, there is a little building with a gift shop and place to eat food then you can leave out of that door and walk 5 minutes to the park up on the mountain but the park was closed when we went so to me there really wasnt much to do. This was our second trip to the Incline. The first time it was just myself and my husband. This time we had our daughter and two young grandchildren. It was a great experience for us all while riding the Incline. I would not recommend this attraction if the wait time is long and you have young children. They were hot and became irritable while waiting. The sign to descend down said a 40 minute to 1 hour wait but it was way over an hour. They really should come up with a better way to board people going down. 2 cars/2 lines to descend. Take a gamble and pick a line because people who got in the other line after us went down before us. Great views from the top from observation deck. They also have food and gift shop at top. Parking is $2. Would definitely go again if our grandchildren are not with us.

The waits were rather long. I would avoid the weekends/holidays if possible. The first try was on a Saturday and quite hot and was a 2 hour wait up and an hour and half to come back down. The next time we went was about a 30 min wait for both trips. The windows on the train car was cloudy so you were not able to see out them very well and the trees overhanging the tracks further blocked the view. But it was a nice 10 min ride.We went and looked in the machine room and the little gift shop, and because we didnt want to only be up at the 10 min for all the time we waited, we ended up walking the few blocks to the Battle of Chattanooga museum then went back in line.Cooler weather would make th experience better. It was really hot and there wasnt much breeze. Over all it is worth doing once and you will enjoy the view. Even though the views from rock city, I personally believe are better and a more enjoyable experience.

If you are afraid of heights I would not recommend. The train going up to the mountain is extremely slow. The height of the mountain is twice as tall as the Empire state building. Be ready to see the most beautiful scene and experience some fresh air. The ride down is also slow and steady. I did not look down honestly but I know it was beautiful. You will enjoy. You can buy souvenir there of course.

It was so much fun to be able to go up the mountain in a rail car! The ride was a lot smoother than I was anticipating! At the top of the mountain, there are several observation areas and you can also see the engine for the pulley system that the railway uses. You can also leave the building and walk around Lookout Mountain. Theres a Confederate war site just a short walk away.

Review №42

Due to COVID, you have to purchase your tickets in advanced. You do still have to take your computer printout to the ticket window to get the actual tickets. The waiting area is outdoors, with industrial fans to cool; however there are people walking up and playing in front of the fans. If youre germ conscious, keep your mask on outside too. We parked a few blocks away because the parking lot is easy to pass. On the way up the mountain, they did a good job of social distancing the riders. The train is EXTREMELY hot, as we rode on a 90° day. There are only two windows front and back to keep the car ventilated. The view at the top was beautiful! Hang on to your tickets though, there is another piece that is needed for the return trip back down the mountain, that was never said and a few people had thrown their tickets away. On the way back down, the car was a bit more crowded and my party of three voluntarily got off to wait for the next train. As others have mentioned, the view on the way up is of peoples yards and shrubbery. The area itself is not touristy at all and is more like finding something neat in your neighbors yard. Four stars for the experience, but I wouldnt do it again.

The Lookout Mountain Incline Railway offers a scenic trip from Lookout Mountain to Point Park which overlooks historic Chattanooga and the Tennessee River. I purchased a roundtrip ticket for $15.00. The trip down and back was less than an hour. Id recommend this for families. Kids will love it. They have a great gift shop and be prepared to buy a photo package of your group at the end. I gave it a 3 star rating because it was not height friendly. Im 57 and my guest was over 6 tall and we had to sit in separate seats so that our knees were pointed toward the aisle. Also a few guests had problems maneuvering up and down the aisle due to the incline. Not a good choice for the physically challenged or elderly with canes. The picture taken was in late April with intermittent rain throughout the day. Overall a good experience. Would definitely recommend to history enthusiasts.

The view on the railway and at the top were fantastic, but the rail cart was old, smelly and has no air conditioning. The recorded information that plays on the ride mentioned that the cables are replaced every 3 years. They really should invest on also replacing the rail carts themselves. We visited the incline the other day as part of the combo packageIt was the third and final stop. We started at the top. There is not much there..gift shop, fudge counter. We arrived around 1 p.m. on a Thursday and were able to get on the first railway (two railways running 15 minutes apart). My girls and I enjoyed the very steep (72 degree angle) ride down. We got some ice cream, (there are some restaurants, and might be other things, but we were too tired to explore) then went right back up. It was weird going backwards, but still enjoyable. As the third part of the package and last thing to do on our itinerary for the day it was enjoyable and quick. The staff was very friendly and courteous.

Incline railway is kind of exciting experience for me,it’s bit of thrilling as well as bit scary. Initially it’s all good but when you look down you’ll feel like you’re falling,it’s very steep but nothing to worry about as it runs on a very slow speed.it hold some historic importance too. They need to make some upgrade in the cart. Tickets are for to and fro ,it gets busy on weekends and sometimes their server got down and they delay the booking. It’s better to buy a package online to cover the rock city, ruby falls and incline railway together. Views are awesome and make sure you get some water bottles if you’re visiting in summer and similarly you wrap yourself properly in winters as at top it freezes. There’s a tiny restaurant at the top and souvenir shop. Enjoy.

The incline railway seems to be the part of tourism package that they have tried to create around Chattanooga which also includes other attractions like Ruby Falls, Tennessee Aquarium and Rock City Gardens. While the other attractions might be living upto the hype, but the incline railway is simply not worth the wait or the hardship you have to endure to experience it.We had booked our train tickets online the day before, and still had to wait 2 hours to get in the train that goes to the mountain top. Whats the point of paying full ticket price before you even get there if you had to wait in line with other people who dont have tickets. The train itself takes about 10 mins to get to the top very slowly. The scenery around is okay at best. You get the same dense trees in other areas of the beautiful state of Tennessee. At the top there a cafe and a souvenir shop. The observation deck is good enough to have panoramic views of the surrounding areas. There is also a Point Park and Battles for Chattanooga museum but they are not really interesting. The downward journey takes the same 10 mins at the same slow pace after another couple of hours wait at the top. Overall not worth the wait. The $15 ticket price and $2 parking aside, its not really worth the 5 hours of your time.

Say what you will, we loved this. It is a slice of local history. We were there on the last day of the season, and the last day for the cars in operation. When they reopen in the spring, they will have new cars. We were hoping to find more technical and historical information about the incline railway, for which would have happily paid, but there were no printed materials available for purchase, specifically about this landmark. The staff on duty were not particularly knowledgeable about details, just general stuff that was readily available on Wikipedia. It was rainy and foggy during our visit, so we would definitely return in the future in better conditions.

The train has no AC and is hot and suffocating. Not your everyday train ride......Point Park is worth a visit at the top...even for the fee. (National Park)So......the Ranger at the Park explained the history and the war. You dont have to be a history buff to understand or even enjoy it. I have the attention of a 3 month old baby and I enjoyed it. He presented with such excitement that he was able to reel me in.Back to the Railway....staff was helpful.Wheelchair users that can walk are able to board. Your wheelchair is placed just a few feet away from you.Wheelchair users that can not walk are unable to ride unless friends and family help them board. The staff is totally hands off due to liability issues.....The actual entry point appear wide enough but the aisle for seating is not. Considering the trains were revamped in 1980 something....you would think that some really smart person would have created a more efficient plan....even if it is just a folding bench of sorts or an aile wheelchair.....Incline Railway it would be awsome if you could create an adventure that the entire community could enjoy......people with limited mobility enjoy the off beaten path as well.....I am just saying. I was a lot disappointed and probably would not support this adventure in the future. You can drive to the top (parking is limited).
