Beautiful place too see. The staff were friendly and informative. A tornado damaged the bridge, but it is supposed to be open soon.

Was not real impressed by the park. They also charge $6 per person. There are much better hikes for free all over the area. The bridge had been damaged in April and still was not fixed, so you couldnt even get to the back part of the hiking area without wading knee deep across the creek.

Ive lived here for many years and this was my first visit. It is now my new favorite place to spend time in nature. The woods and the water, the trails, gathering areas are all very beautiful. What I love so much is that once on the trails it feels like I am deep in a forest even though theyre less than a mile. Highly recommend this place for its beauty and accessibility. Also recommend because it is only possible by private donations and we really dont need to lose places like this.

I dont normally do negative reviews but I wish Id have read the latest reviews before visiting here. I was highly disappointed and unsure why we were charged $6 for upkeep. This place has definitely not been kept up. The bridge was closed which kept us from seeing alot. Trees are down across most of the paths and the haunted part was an absolute joke. Im not sure whats happened here recently but it wouldve been nice to have been informed at the visitors center upon entry. I wouldnt recommend paying to come here and I wouldnt come back the next time Im in Chattanooga.

We had a nice time here, but I probably wouldn’t come here regularly. We really enjoyed the information about the Cherokee uses for the different plants, posted throughout the trail! But the trails were pretty slick, muddy, and covered with fallen trees and branches, and the bugs were out of control! We really appreciated that the Visitor Center provided bug spray...but we still got devoured.

Review №10

Not worth visiting at this time. The tornado during Easter damaged the bridge, none of the exhibits are open, not even the gift shop. No bathrooms available. Basically, you give a $5 donation to the park which is fine but dont expect ANYTHING else. Without access to restrooms or ANY exhibits, it should be closed.

It was good despite having pine trees (a thorn in a side). Paying was good thing, it kept the the Cabelas and REI people away for the most part. As these two binary consumers have spoiled so many good natural areas.

Audubon Acres is great to visit anytime of year, but Fall and Winter are especially beautiful. With the bare trees and a forest floor filled with brown leaves, winter may not seem like the best time to take a walk in the woods, but if you look close you will see natures hidden secrets.

We just left here and wow definitely not what we expected. I’d love a refund of the 12$ we just wasted. It’s literally just a walk in the woods with a very nasty creek flowing beside it. And we are both eat up with mosquito bites. I have them all over my face and body. They should mention how bad they are and how poor condition the trails are. The older lady wasn’t all too pleasant either she asked a ton of questions about our trip and was condescending about the places we had and hadn’t visited. Don’t waste your time or money just go walk the woods in your backyard and you will have the same experience.

I used to work here when I was in college. Beautiful place! The swinging bridge has been replaced with a much nicer one. Make sure you bring insect repellent because there are damp places on most of the trails and the mosquitoes can be bad at times. There is a kitchen at the facility you can rent and it’s a great meeting place! There is always something to see here. During the summer, you may see the resident Great Horned Owl family teaching the new babies how to hunt in the open field near the tracks. You can easily spend an entire day here and not be bored.

Audubon Acres, hidden in a mire of suburban sprawl, is one of the most interesting places Ive ever been to. Its environment is part of what makes it so incredible. Less than a mile away from Hamilton Place Mall, you can take a hike and feel like youre in a different century. The place has ridiculously rich history for what seems like a random plot of land on a (somewhat) polluted creek. There was the Little Owl Village half a millennium ago before it was burned, and Hernando de Soto may have visited here. Later a Cherokee family built the Spring Frog Cabin (still standing) in the mid 1700s (one of the oldest structures in Chattanooga) and were forced to vacate during the Trail of Tears. The Walker family moved in, where Robert Sparks Walker, a local figure, naturalist, and memoirist of his times at Audubon Acres, was raised. There was some railroad affair there during the Civil War, too (a line was built along the edge of the property crossing the creek at both ends because the guy charged with it got a commission from the government for bridges). Most recently, hippies descended on the field below the cabin in the sixties and the park had to be closed for a while. The majority of the forest near the entrance had to be taken down ten years ago because of the pine beetle, and privet has moved in, but all along the creek on both sides are enormous, gorgeous trees. Theres enough wildlife that if youre quiet and take your time youre likely to see frogs, turtles, herons, all manner of songbirds, fish, and hawks. Wildflowers are common, too.The place has been poorly managed as long as I can remember, and with the community around it, a lot more could be done with it, but just in terms of a beautiful, historic place to visit without much adornment, you cant get much better around here. Theres a swinging bridge, too.
