Great place for a walk in the woods. Quiet and hardly any road noise. Mostly single file paths that require sure footing. Limited parking and no parking allowed in main road. Beautiful scenery and plenty of nature (deer, squirrels, snakes, etc.) Dogs welcomed on leash. Some benches along paths.

Excellent place for an easy walk through the woods. The trails are well-maintained and easy to follow. There is plenty of tree cover providing shade for those warmer days, and the scenery along the stream is especially beautiful.

Beautiful, well-marked, and peaceful trails! There’s a variety of trail lengths that are all relatively easy and that link so you can take a longer hike if desired. Trail maintenance was great and there are lots of benches with lovely memorial plaques.

Great place for a quiet walk. Wooded with streams and a few benches. Interesting rocks jutting out of stream and several trees that had grown at odd angles. Trails are marked but are slightly long with rocky and heavily rooted sections. Maps at trail head. One of my dogs favorite places.

After lying down and rolling in the shallow creek water, my dog gets more exercise than in a week of neighborhood walks. One of my favorite places!

Great - easy mostly level trails that are well marked that sometimes follows the river. A bridge or two with some benches. Not crowed, small parking area. I took a photo of the map on the board at the entrance (glad I did). It helped take the trails we wanted.

Excellent set of trails through easy terrain with great wetlands, hilltops, and wildflowers to explore. Only downside: far too many irresponsible humans let their dogs off leash - Im not sure why this is such a popular sport here.Trails run along New Hope creek and past two old mill sites, long washed out. Neither of these are the big Johnston Mill that gave the area its name - thats about a mile downstream in Duke Forest. But, lots of great history to explore here. Trails also run along the ridges around a large wetland along Old Field creek. Gorgeous Spring wildflowers like Atamasco Lilies are easily found, and birding is excellent, too. An excellent afternoon hike any time of the year.

This is a wonderful bottom land trail so close to Durham and Chapel Hill. New Hope Creek is really pretty. Look for Atamasco Lillies in April and Passion Flower in the summer.

This is a great hiking spot for folks looking for a nice, mild hike. No major inclines to keep an eye out for, but you will want shoes with good tread. I recommend wearing a water friendly hiking shoe so that you can play in the creek and cool off. This isn’t a swimming hole spot, but it’s a lovely woodsy walk. Keep your eyes peels for poison ivy, it’s all around the trails in small spots. But don’t let that stop you! Go home and scrub off in a cold shower (not a bath!) with a washcloth and dawn dish soap twice to save yourself the inconvenience.

DO NOT GO TO THIS PARK! It is totally infested with ticks, alligators, beautiful scenery, interesting trails, and very few people. And we want to keep it that way, so just tell everyone that it is totally not worth the trouble and well keep it to ourselves!

Very beautiful trails, but the shade means that puddles stay long after the rains are gone. Very good birding potential too, even though the canopy could make spotting difficult at times.

Great place to walk. The sounds of the birds and flowing water is relaxing. Watch where you step because there are plenty of roots. Might come across some snakes (they were black racers) so let them pass by or walk past giving them some room.

Johnston Mill Nature Preserve is a Triangle Land Conservancy property in Orange County between Chapel Hill and Hillsborough. There are about 3.5 miles of hiking trails throughout the preserve. New Hope Creek runs through the northern part and is very rocky with a few nice cascades and drops. Old Field Creek is a tributary and has steep bluffs to hike along. Its also a nice lace to see spring wildflowers. The parking areas are small so try to arrive early on weekends.

Extremely well maintained reserve. The trails are very well maintained, and all have clearly marked metal blazes to let you know which of the three trails you are on.If youre looking to see the old gristmill, youll be somewhat disappointed since only a small piece of the original wall remains. The trails are very easy to follow and see, and a pleasure to walk on. Birds and fat squirrels are everywhere. While walking its pretty easy to sneak up on deer in the area as well.
