Entrance is $6 but there is a student discount for high school ages. I thought it would be all sad things, but it actually was a perfect mix of things to make you smile and others which made you truly think of the history and significance of black people in the US. Would definitely recommend!

This is an important landmark within Iowa for better understanding its history of African American life and contributions. While not a large museum, it has a design that is highly conducive to reflection and offers a wealth of historical stories that need to be heard. It is also a great place to take families, as children need to be thoughtfully educated not only about African American oppression, but also the achievements and inherent value that its people have and do offer to society.

My husband and I are from Florida, but were in Iowa temporarily for training and we decided to stop by the African American Museum. It was the highlight of our time there! Very well kept facility, & so much information on African American history & culture that youll probably never find in any textbook. We loved it.

This is a great place! Super friendly staff and the exhibits are well researched and relevant to Iowa. I learned some amazing things about the history of civil rights in Iowa. There were several stories about committed, persistent and righteous women and men who shaped the history of the state. We are living in their legacy! Go see and be inspired, educated and celebrated!

This is an extraordinary museum for the little known and underappreciated contributions of African American arrival and achievements to Iowa. The curators have done a wonderful job in the permanent display(re-done a couple of times since the museum had opened) and the temporary exhibits-sometimes in cooperation with other AA museums ) are usually well done and always of interest to historians and students of culture and race in America.
