Partial entry is available on one side and you’re able to walk in and see a few cannons. There are bathrooms and swings nearby as well

The tour was fun, free and short. Made it through the top of the fort and saw the cannons and back out, in just a half hour. The scenery from the top is gorgeous. The tours run on weekends at the top of every hour from 12-3pm.

This is a place I’ll definitely come back to, mostly because I missed the tour. Was so upset about that. It’s a beautiful place, surrounded by the Boston Harbor with crisp, clean air and a place to eat, as well as several monuments, a walking trail, and a park for kids to play. If you’re in Boston, it’s a must see.

Waste of time if you want to learn any history about the fort. No landscaping, no plaques or information anywhere around the fort. People only come here to eat food from the reaturant nearby. Its such a disappointment. Mass DCR should take a look at what the folks at Fort Ticonderoga have done, with every step you are immersed in the history of the fort and the area. With all the money the state of Massachusetts has, there is no excuse why this historic landmark is so awful and uneducational.

A great place to walk and, think clearly. Watch the airplanes. A wonderful place to watch the sunrise and, marvel at Gods Creation for us. Thanks to all the people who work so hard overseeing and maintaining the beach and, grounds and bathrooms, keeping them flawless and clean. Thanks to Sullivans for a marvelous summer. Blessings to you we appreciate you all.

Cool place. Lots of interesting history there. Both pre-war and after the apocalypse. Especially two great battles that occurred around 210 years after the world ended.During both of those greats battles the minutemen (aka settlers) somehow managed to fight back many human looking robots from the greatest scienetific institute in the commonwealth and also soldiers with power armor, good weapons and a great deal of military training.

Great landmark in Boston! We went to visit it but it was closed. One of the locals told me to ask the maintenance personnel to open it so we could have a little vieuw of the insight. So we did, the man was very friendly and not only openend it up but gave us a full tour and explanation... it was great!

Quick summary: Well maintained fort with beautiful views. However the volunteer organization that handles visitors provides horrendous customer service, confusing information, and unimpressive tours. In greater detail, this is a beautiful fortress. A great example of a smaller Third System (1830s onward) fortification that matches in design with the larger Fort Warren out in the bay. It is in very good repair, and the surrounding grounds are well maintained and have lots of recreational amenities, including restrooms, a fishing pier, and a large playground. However the organization that runs the tours (The Castle Island Association) provides terrible visitor service. Hence the two star rating. For starters, their website a states the interior of the fort is open on weekends from 12:00-3:30pm. It also mentions that tours are given by volunteers. However it doesnt not state that the ONLY way to see the interior is to take a tour. If you are hoping to just wander the walls to channel your inner Civil War sentry, find another fort. The tours are only given at certain times and other wise the gate is closed. The fort is quite popular, so expect to wait in line for quite a while before getting in. Once you are inside the walls, you are corraled into one small corner until the tour launches if you wander away slightly, you get snapped at by some very rude volunteers. The tour has two options, the short tour of just the upper ramparts, or the long tour of some of the casemate rooms and the upper deck. The guide divided the people up by saying If you cant pay attention, have a child, or just want some pretty pictures, go on the short tour. If you want to learn some history go on the long tour. Im not sure if this was a joke, but it just came across as demeaning to large portion of the people visiting. The tour itself was lackluster at best. The guide had a basic but incomplete knowledge of fortresses, and a very poor speaking voice. It was hard to hear him even inside the rooms. He also tended to blow off visitor questions and was rude to the point of hostility to an enthusiastic 10 year old visitor. The tour was also trailed by another guide who was rudely insistent on visitors giving complete attention to the guide speaking even if they were just trying to take some pictures. This all seemed to contradict the introduction of this is a really informal tour and you can ask questions whenever you want. While the strict visitation rules perhaps contribute in some small fashion to the fantastic condition the fort is in, the overall impression I get is this Castle Island Association does not want people to actually visit and they would rather the structure exist as their private clubhouse. I feel this is a rather shameful use of a public resource. I can only hope Massachusetts DCR will take a larger roles in managing the site. If keeping it closed is necessary for safety or preservation, so be it, but it is far for better for a public entity to make that determination. All this aside, if you want to see at fortress in Boston, skip Fort Independence. Cough up the cash to take the ferry out to Fort Warren. Much larger site, and much better tours run by Massachusetts State Park Rangers.

Definitely a hidden gem and for good reason. There is everything you need for a relaxing afternoon by the seafront whether you want beaches, ice cream trucks, or a cool fort. My parents used to take me here to watch planes take off and land when I was a kid, I find myself doing that now and its very relaxing.

It was kind of boring until the Mirelurk Queen showed up. You gotta experience this at least once-- she sounds like a walrus, and shoots acid at you. Oh-- if you go in the basement you will find a tribute to Edgar Allen Poe! But dont bother spending hours fixing the concrete walls-- theres mods for that.

Basically,This guy came up to me and asked for help for a settlement. I did it and then came back. He said it again and I helped once again. It came to where I was repeating this. He then told me to kill all the crabs in the fort and the take it for the Minutemen. He also called those crabs Mirelurks. Anyway when I completed his last mission he sent me to help the same settlement I already helped. So I shot him and now all the Minutemen are Permanently My Enemy. I liked the Artillery though.

Very high and thick walls that give nice shade in hot and humid days, so one can rest for a moment and cool down. The Healthy Trail is passing by it - a loop around a bay, just around 3 mile walk. You can see planes taking off and landing at the Logan Int. Airport. Not sure of the attractions inside, but there seams to be just a walk on the green lawn of the flat roof with few cannons just laying on it. There is an entrance fee - common, that minimal ‘expo’ should be for free!

Had a great time here even though it was windy as heck here on the day we went. The historical feel is great and the scenery is fantastic. There is a nice place for ice cream and quick food. Our only annoyance was that there was no changing table in the bathroom. I mean its 2019. They should have a mothers room by now lol. It was a great way to catch some fresh air and let our daughter play on the elaborate playground.
