This is definitely one of the best spots to get a table in Boston. The balcony section has a great view and even better privacy. It’s a reasonable price in comparison to other clubs in Boston. Highly recommend heading over here but try and go through a promoter for some solid deals. Sometimes service can be bad and the hostesses don’t really help out.

Security was fast and sort of lacking at the door for a concert. Checked purses only. On the inside everyone was respectful, security looked very attentive and walked around to make sure everyone was being safe and respectful. Decent enough sound system but the sound mixer felt like they dropped the ball at times since it was 70% drums 30% lyrics. Everything else was good though. Would go again.

Fine spot to see a band but the clubbing hard cap was an issue.I saw Phosphorescent here and the show was great. Nice enough venue, nothing special. They have a club after the show and there was a hard cap on the show length and we were ushered out unceremoniously, that it to say brutally, by the staff right after the show. Revenue maximization is great and all, but there was a coldness here that was something to behold.Venue is fine.

Came in from out of town and this place, and the owner, are incredible. The owner was really concerned about everyone having the best time. And the DJ they had performing on Saturday night was BOMB AF. I love to dance, but my husband is more reserved and he STILL talks about how much fun we had on that night. If you’re thinking about it, stop. And just go.

We went to the Royale for a private party organized in parallel to a Biotech Convention. For that reason I can‘t speak about the usual service and party‘ers, but about the venue. The layout is quite nice and practical, good access to the dance floors, great sound system and friendly staff. One downside is the lack of a roof top terrace or so to light a cigarette. If you want to have a smoke you need to leave and risk a line up. So be warned.

My first time in Boston was a hoot, largely thanks to the Royale. It is a gorgeous venue with historic charm, great sound and decent lines of sight. I especially liked the slightly raised area of the floor near the soundboard. Although the balcony was closed to GA for the event we attended, I suspect that would be a marvelous vantage point as well. Security was friendly (for Boston lol), and the barstaff was even better. Upon asking for water, they happily gave me a cup of water (instead of forcing me to buy me a $5 bottle of water w no lid, as they do in other venues), and that made my heart sing. Thanks, Boston - Ill be back!

Awesome place to see a show! I took a lot of photos so you can get the vibe of the concert venue called the Bowery. It is upstairs and I think there is a dance-club below, I remember going there in the 90s-2000s and it was the ROXY. There is no sign out front so if you park in the garage that is after the Wang & Shubert and walk directly across the street there is a bridal shop on the left and the Royale is the next door over. There was a level of stairs to go up and then there was a large 1st floor dancefloor/standing room only area, bars everywhere so no waiting for a drink, seating all around, coat check (super nice!), then when you go to the upper level there are intimate seating areas for groups of people that have direct eye-line to the show when it starts as well as banquettes, tables and couches. There are cool elements all over in an art deco theme with silver statues, mirrors, couches all over, as mentioned before a bar like every 20 feet (on the upper level as well). I was super impressed with the atmosphere because we only paid $20 bucks so i was picturing sticky floors, raggedy seating, if any and gross bathrooms as well as long lines at the bar but this place knows how to put on a show and do it RIGHT. All the people captured in the photos gave their consent to be on this website. If you are handicapped Im not sure this is the place for you but you could call and check.

Back in October, my fiancé and I had the pleasure of seeing IDLES at this lovely little venue. Our experience was absolutely exemplary! Bars were conveniently located, drinks were reasonably priced, bathroom was clean, coat check was awesome, sound was perfectly balanced. But the most notable part of our evening (outside of the awesome show we saw) was the security staff. These folks were awesome! They went above and beyond to make sure everyone had a safe experience without sacrificing any of the riotous energy that comes with a punk show. They were gently pulling down crowd surfers at the barrier, checking them to make sure they were ok, then sending them off to get back into the crowd. I even saw a security guard offering some bottled water to a patron that looked a little overheated. I know this is a weird thing to geek out about, but it really was the coolest experience I’ve ever had with concert security.I would highly recommend catching a show at this venue. I really hope IDLES are able to swing by here again on their next US tour, because I would absolutely love to have another experience like that!

Great concert venue, Ive seen Blue October here twice now, the sound quality is amazing, the room is spacious enough that youre not sandwiched in between people like a sardine, yet can still get a very close, good view of the stage. Coat check was as its expected to be, with the added perk of an extra friendly, and having a very memorable personality attendant working the window. I was extremely surprised and grateful that free ice water was provided upon request at the bar, because needing to decide if using your train fare home is worth the price to relieve extreme thirst, and most venues do not offer this at all, you have to spend the $4 for a bottle of water or you get nothing, so it was much appreciated. The only negative thing that I have to say about it is, the extremely long wait time to get in, due to truly unnecessary full body pat downs, in depth inspections of all bags, and it seemed like they were actually removing people from line and sending them back out, I find this to be an absolute ridiculous practice, it slows things down drastically and honestly prevents some people from getting in to see the band before they began their performance, Ive been to many other clubs/concert venues and have never experienced anything like this before. Id advise you to bring only your tickets, I.D (because thats a must have for entrance to the Royale), money, credit/debit card, keys, and cell phone, and nothing else, besides maybe your jacket (with empty pockets) if youre going to be attending a show here.

The audio quality and mixing were awful at the concert I attended here. I went to see a wonderful band and could barely hear the vocals--the instruments completely drowned out the voices. The Royale was in a really central location downtown, not far from the hotel I stay at. A 5-min Uber ride brought us right to the door, where there was no line. We went on Friday night for a HeRobust show (DJ) and showed up around 11, so we were pleasantly surprised to get in so quickly. The pat down was real quick and getting through the door only took about 5 minutes. The entrance is gorgeous, like an old style theatre with the double staircase leading to the floor. The layout was different and cool, they have lounge areas with couches off to the sides of the main floor. The balcony area is ok, but its much much hotter up there and the music isnt as loud. You have to be on the main floor to get the full experience with most shows like this. The crowd was a diverse mix of Bassheads and likely Royale regulars. I loved the 21+ age restriction. (The 18-21 crowd at shows can sometimes make you wonder why you go out.) It was a great show and good venue, crowd and overall night. Ill be back for the next good debstep show for sure.

I have been here a few times for concerts and its been an okay experience, but now I WILL NEVER GO BACK.During the show on 11/5/19, my best friend passed out. I received more kind offers and better help from the band members merch table guy and people in the audience then I did from the staff. She is on medication for blood pressure and the lights from the show had started to bother her. When she started feeling lousy, we had exited the crowd and found a barstool for her to sit on between one of the bars and the merch area. When she passed out the immediate response was from an audience member who was a nurse and the merch guy. I even had another audience member offer assistance as she was CPR certified. After about a minute of commotion, we had three security guards and the nearby bartender approach us. As my friend was regaining consciousness the bartender began yelling in our faces. The music was loud, yes, but she was inches from my face and my friend who was barely conscious. She shouted that we needed to move my friend to a nearby couch. I said please give her a moment to get her bearings. The bartender then proceeded to tell us if we didnt get her off the floor that security will have to take her out of here. What were they going to do? Carry a barely conscious girl outside and drop her on the sidewalk? I told her she needed to back off and stop yelling as, again, my friend was still barely conscious. She continued to talk over me and yell at me that she needed to be moved, completely disrespecting my friend’s well-being and my request. The security guards said nothing. After a solid minute of continued yelling over me, my friend finally let me know she wanted to get up.I helped a security guard move her to a nearby couch. Our belongings were on the stool behind us. I had to yell to one of the security guard following aimlessly behind us to please get our stuff so it wasn’t stolen. Of the five staff members involved in this entire incident only two were semi-decent. The man who helped me carry her offered to grab her water and juice. Another guard told us that the show would be over soon and we could sit and relax before heading out and that if we needed anything to grab a nearby staff member. The other guards and the bartender disappeared completely. Those guards, too, then disappeared and were not seen again, not even to check in on us.About fifteen minutes later the show ended. The guard standing beside the stage, who had not been present during the incident, approached us and told us we had to leave because they were going to start cleaning. I informed him my friend had passed out and another guard told us we were okay to sit and relax for a bit. We knew the venue was not closing as they were still selling merch and the band was coming out for a meet and greet. He stared at me blankly and I couldn’t figure out if he hadn’t heard me or just didn’t care. He again told us we couldn’t stay and had to leave. As I tried to express again what had happened my friend said let’s just go. As we got up to leave, the girls across from us tried to help by also explaining the situation. I unfortunately didn’t see or hear the guard’s response as my friend and I had begun to leave. The girls chased after us and apologized on behalf of the uncaring staff, something that’s not even in their control, and asked if they could help us exit the venue. This whole ordeal was disgraceful on the staff’s behalf. This venue needs to take time to properly train the staff members on how to handle a crisis situation. Not once did a single one of the staff members ask if she hit her head when she fell or if she required an ambulance. While she did not, this should have been the first question the staff asked. Instead, they asked only if she was diabetic, if she was on medication, and if she had been drinking. The bartender was rude and heartless and several of the security guards were careless and inattentive. Needless to say, I will never be attending an event at this venue ever again.

I was staying with college buddies at the Marriott next door. We got back from dinner and one my friends was in, lets call it a jovial mood, and was not willing to call it a night. He was pretty tipsy and when we got to the entrance to the Marriott he walked over to the entrance to the Royale. Someone had to stay with him for his own safety. I was willing to go in with him but decided to run upstairs to the room before going into the Royale. I returned 5 minutes later to find my friend was already inside. I walked up to the bouncer and took out my ID. He told me to step out of line and proceeded to tell me that I was too drunk to be allowed inside. I looked at him in disbelief and asked him if there was any way I could prove that I was not intoxicated. He said no and asked me to step out of line. Heres the thing. My friends, and everyone else in line were white. The crowd that night was overwhelming white. Im black. I stuck out like a sore thumb. I realized that the presence of my friends had gotten me into places that would never have let me in. In their absence, I got to see the truth. It saved me the $20 cover but got me thinking about clubs that have a no athletic apparel and sneakers policy. I was profiled that night. It wasnt that big of a deal in the end as my friend made it back to the room shortly after. I put this out there because what that Caucasian bouncer did was wrong and may matter for someone else. It may matter for my son or daughter and for them, I choose not to be silent.

I had to demand for my card back which after telling the bartender a few time she finally gave me back my card. My friend couldnt get her card back until the drinks were paid. A different friend used her card and it went through but the bartender never gave her card back only the friend that order the drinks got hers back. I think this place tries to steal peoples card and charge them with a bunch of things they never order. The next day I was charged $75 dollars when my card supposedly declined. Also my two friend had a bunch of transactions, the one that her card went through was charged over $100 for 3 shots of patron. Had a great experience at the Aaron Lewis show on 11/7/2014. Club management was exceptional in helping with a ticketing issue (not their fault). Security was adequate but not intrusive. The venue its self is beautiful inside. Bartenders were courteous and drinks were fairly priced for the market. Parking was affordable directly across the street and there were plenty of restaurants around after the show. I will definitely seek out shows at the Royale in the future as our overall experience was exceptional.

I want to like the Royale more but its tough. The stairs to get in are extremely narrow, which makes leaving at the end of the night an absolute disaster. Theres also way too much clutter on the floor. The bar is super obtrusive and in the way. Its just not the best designed venue. If you arent right up front theres a strong chance youll have a tough time seeing and maneuvering. The staff is perfectly pleasant and accommodating, the bouncers are great at dealing with BS, and there are several parking options directly across the street which I cannot complain about. Everything about the experience except the physical area itself is great, but seeing a show there is unfortunately a gamble.

I always have fun here. You may have to wait in line, pay a cover, & look normal. But I have had only positive experiences doing so! I even left my coat & two weeks later they returned it to me, and were incredibly nice [+super cute] in doing so… It’s a great default Saturday night spot

Great location and great venue to see a show. There are a few seats around the venue but this is a standing venue. They dont over crowd it either. Definitely a place to check out for and up close and intimate show.

Saw Enslaved and a few other metal bands here...what a neat, intimate venue! They even have a couple of lounge sofas near the stage if you get tired of standing...solid sound and lighting

Fun time but the bouncers are aggressive and hyper-confrontational, avoid them

Great place to go dancing at night with a group. The assortment of types of people can make for a very interesting night as well. Royale is also great for comedy shows and other functions that come here.

Really disappointed in this club. We got there early before it opened and still had to wait 1 hour before getting in. Then $25 cover charge was crazy. Finally inside and the DJ was horrible.

A member of our group was denied entry because of their supposedly semi-formal dress code, but other people inside the lounge were wearing the same garb, if not worse. Anyway, the atmosphere was okay but the music selection wasnt up to par.

Went here a while back, the place is awesome! We had VIP for a friends birthday and it was a total blast. DJ was killing it

Went for a function, nice space. When it turns into a club the atmosphere definitely changes. Definitely not enough bathrooms for the women.

Ive seen a few concerts here over the years. Its a great venue. The acoustics were some of the best Ive been to for a smaller venue. Bars all over the place and not too crowded.

As old as this place is it deserves 5 stars. You can tell its has character for a nightclub but what I really like about it is that its one of the only theater style clubs in Boston which always for not just DJs but bands to play in such a huge club environment. I wish Boston had more clubs like this but it doesnt and people need to realize that this place will probably always be around.

Ok, so youre looking for a nice club in Boston. Youre a normal person, just looking for a good time, maybe a little dancing. This IS NOT the place for you. It is in a seedy area and the bouncers look like ex football players cut from the team for being out of shape. Oh, but did you purchase tickets beforehand? Dont expect that to mean that they will let you through the door!I know what youre thinking. This guy is just sore. Trust me, this is the WORST place I have ever been to. It gives Boston a bad name. Save your money and time and go somewhere else.
