Bluebonnet Swamp is truly a fantastic urban oasis of nature exposure! A vast amount of wildlife can be observed both indoors in a controlled environment and outdoors on the lengthy boardwalks and pathways through the 100+ acre park. Currently during Phase 2 of the pandemic, trail walking is 100% free, but the indoor portion is still open for the usual small fee. Admission is generally $3 but cheaper for other categories such as child or student.

Very nice trail and nature center. Not too long, but plenty to see. The reptile & amphibian exhibit inside was very good and the animals all looked very healthy and alert. The staff is obviously taking good care of the animals. Definitely recommend visiting, but like someone else mentioned, they have wonky hours and I too felt rushed when I visited just before noon on a Thursday (they closed at noon).

Has an easy to understand map near the entrance to the trail. Currently the inside facility requires signing a waiver and questionnaire due to Covid 19. You must wear a mask and take a temperature check before going inside. We skipped that part and went straight to the trail which has a nice, easy layout. The hours are currently limited to a 12PM shut down time and a 1130am cutoff from entering. Also we were not charged admission just to take the nature trail. Admission does apply if you want to go inside the exhibit.

This place is a great natural preserve featuring unspoiled delta swampland. Say hello to Ashley when you check in, she is friendly, helpful, informative, and very pretty ! Enjoy a nice quiet walk down the well maintained paths, watch the squirrels and bunnies frolic in the woods, and watch those huge white birds glide silently thru the air. If you are quiet and patient, you might see a hummingbird drinking from one of the many feeders placed around the trails. Step lightly on the bridges and boardwalks, and you will see frogs, turtles, minnows, and sometimes a water snake. Try this place out, you wont be sorry ! Dont forget to make a generous donation when you visit, the preserve depends upon your support, Louisiana ! Help them out.

This was a cool place. The trails are short enough for young children or older children at heart. Not much shaded parking and the check in building feels sparse but holds quite a few live reptiles which was fun and captured your attention in a climate controlled environment. The mosquitos are real here (even during the midday times) so be sure to pack spray and consider wearing long sleeves and pants if you have trouble with bites. Toss your favorite water container and a few bucks ($3 for adults $2 for kids with senior and student pricing available) in a bag and you have a few solid hours of fun and education. Be sure to keep an eye on the little ones as we have been twice and seen snakes each time along with frogs, fish, turtles, cool plants, and even heard owls. There is a safe place in the building for kids to play with some toys and such and meeting rooms likely for demonstrations and educational stuff.

Fun and inexpensive to bring a little nature into your day. Unfortunately though it appears the swamp is drying up. There were lots of snakes, turtles, birds and baby aligators inside the nature center! Please visit this place as maybe some extra money to prolong the life of this hidden baton rouge gem!!

This place is awesome and so pretty. You could hear owls all while walking through the stunning swamp. It was very easy to find and isn’t expensive to visit. However, I’m giving it 3 stars because we wanted to buy something in the nature center and they had already “closed down the system” even though they were still open for 25 more minutes. So my family, and the 3 other families in there who ALSO wanted to buy something could not do so all because the two girls working the counter wanted to leave right as the center closed. Super annoying. Definitely go visit here, but make sure it’s an hour before they close if you want to buy something.

I was very disappointed with the service Jessica Guthrie, Manager promised during the walk through of the rental facility prior to my daughter-in-law baby shower. When I arrived on site at the facility, their staff member was very unprofessional and rude after I had brought my concerns regarding the uncleanliness of the facility. The floor of the entrance was dirty, the carpet needed vacuum. The tables and chairs was not setup as promised during the walk through. The kitchen had roach eggs and spiders on the counter tops. There were nasty dishes left in the sink with dirty wash sponge. The refrigerator was not clean or cleared out. The bathrooms was not clean. This is suppose to be a place where kids have day camp. If your child go to this place, I would think twice about taking them there. Then the female staff person had the nerve to check me off to see if I cleaned the area before leaving. My crew had to take 30 minutes to clean before setup. In the contract, I was only given one hour setup time. Therefore, we only had 30 minutes to setup, not fair. What’s the purpose of having a hour setup time, if the rental guest have to come in to clean and setup their space. It doesn’t make since to give the guest one hour setup time when you have not kept your end of the agreement. Also, you need to get rid of that staff member girl that was overseeing 12/29/19, Sunday. She was unprofessional and does not need to be in that position. She gives your company a poor representation. For this reason, I will never rent this facility again.By the way, let me give you qualities a representative staff member should have: someone that is warm welcoming and inviting with a smile, willing to make sure the guest is satisfied with their space, and helpful in resulting issues that my arrive in a professional manner.

Beautiful place, very inexpensive! A great wild get away in the middle of the city! They have 1.5 miles of easy hiking trails, including a boardwalk over the swamp. There is a wonderful menagerie of live snakes, turtles, and gators in display tanks, complete with info cards about each species! They keep bees in the warmer months, you can see a portion of the inside of their hive through a glass wall, and buy honey in the gift shop.I adore this place, and recommend it for almost everyone. School age children will have a blast, keep them entertained all afternoon/morning for under $5!

The walk is pleasant and not arduous. As our visit was in mid August, we hardly saw any of the advertised wildlife, which rely on flooded areas for their habitat. There is a small hall, also housing the administration and ticket desk with some wildlife to see, including quite a few snakes. I think Springtime would be the best time to visit, when the swamp areas are filled with wildlife, but dont expect gators.

The Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center has been open for several years and it is a must see attraction when you visit Baton Rouge. Visitors are encouraged to adventure out on the wide boardwalk that meanders through the swamp, past plenty of fallen trees and wildlife. The visitors center has several wildlife exhibits that are always popular with children. Relaxing walk with plenty of nature. Great place in the city to watch birds. Easy walking paths but you feel like you are in the middle of a forest.

Every trail was nice and well cared for. We met a volunteer on a trail and he pointed out birds for us to watch for. Yes, the trails are short but you have a whole world of Louisiana plants, trees and migrating and permanent birds to spot. Our friend loved it!

We went here today in a great mood only to be met by moody employees. We go in at 4, pay, and are told that we can do the trail if we are back at our cars by 5 because that’s when they close the gate. We are totally cool with that. However, I go to the restroom get a drink from the machine and am looking around inside the nature center and am told in a condescending tone (like I’m a child) we need to go and do the trail NOW. I’m confused because why does it matter when I start one of the trails (there are three trails all combined maybe a little over a mile) as long as I’m back to my car by 5? If I want to look in the nature center walk one of the short trails and go to my car after that’s my business. Nope. They tell my husband again we need to go on the trail NOW. So we eye roll the situation (don’t say anything), go, and come back to the nature center at 452 to finish looking at what we didn’t get to look at the first time (turtles snakes etc). At 457 the manager tells us in an aggravated way we need to leave now as they have to lock the gate. The building signs are posted nature center is open until 5 pm. I say okay, and am just going to leave it alone and ask for the managers name to make a follow up complaint. The young girl there says she doesn’t feel comfortable giving me her bosses name then proceeds to tell me how we ignored them when they told us to start the trail and be at our car by 5. I respond that the sign says the building is open until 5. Also, the parking lot has a gate that locks on one side and an open exit which anyone can access at any hour of the day on the other side. The hours of the building do not match what they say and apparently you can’t look around the nature center after 4 if you want to walk any piece of the trail because they will badger you until you leave the building.

I went here when my family came down for a visit and we all had a blast. The trails are well maintained and the plant and animal life in this area are very exotic and intreaguing-- especially if you are new to Louisiana.
