The Michael C. Carlos Museum is an art museum located in Atlanta on the historic quadrangle of Emory Universitys main campus. The Carlos Museum has the largest ancient art collections in the Southeast, including objects from ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome, the Near East, Africa and the ancient Americas. The collections are housed in a Michael Graves designed building which is open to the public. One of the oldest museums in Georgia, the museums collections date back to 1876, when a general museum known as Emory College Museum was established on Emory Universitys original campus in Oxford, Georgia. After the university was relocated to Atlanta, a small group of professors officially founded the Emory University Museum in 1919. The collections were housed and displayed in various buildings around the campus. Over the years, Atlanta businessman Michael C. Carlos donated over $20 million to create a permanent home for the museum, which opened in 1985. The museum was renamed again to the Emory University Museum of Art and Archaeology and was officially accredited by the American Alliance of Museums as a museum of antiquities and fine arts. Carlos died in December 2002 at the age of 75. A major expansion in 1993 transformed the museum into one of Atlantas top arts institutions. Upon the new buildings opening, the museum became known as the Michael C. Carlos Museum, named after its most generous patron.

I was very pleased with the size of the facility and the quality pieces of artwork on display. There were exhibits from Africa, Asia, India, North American Indian, Greece, Rome, etc... Its almost as if your literally walking through history. There was so much to see. Expect to be there for at least 2 hours if you truly want to immerse yourself in the different cultures represented. You CAN take pictures, but NO FLASH allowed! ENJOY!

I got a great deal on a audio tour from Groupon for the Egyptian exhibition. I was surprised to see that the audio tour encompassed all the exhibits. I was impressed with the exhibits and the muesum was much bigger than I had originally thought. The Egyptian exhibition was impressive! Ill definitely be back with the kids to show them around.Side notes:You will need ID to check out the audio kit. Also, on Sundays 1-5 admission is free.I got a handmade friendship bracelet from the bookstore.

A fantastic museum, small, yet it has an excellent collection. And the gift shop is surprisingly awesome too, great prices and a great selection of books, jewelry and all that kind of stuff. The security is a bit distracting, and trying to park and getting to the museum is a bit of a hassle, but other than that, this is a great museum!

Found a deal on Groupon for an audio tour and took it. It was a great experience. There was free parking in the campus garage. The museum is fairly small but has a lot of artifacts and historical pieces. For such a small museum, they had mummies! Granted, not sure if they’re real but nonetheless it was cool highly recommend!

This wonderful museum is located inside the historical Emory University campus features a wonderfully extensive collection of North American artifacts that are pre-columbian one of the largest collections of mummies and Egyptian artifacts outside of the Cairo Museum or the London Museum they also a wonderful collection of Greek and Roman artifacts the special collections exhibit at the time I went with cats of ancient Egypt which was also interesting sight this great museum is very family-friendly and veteran-friendly as they offer special rates for veterans this institution is very much on par with the Smithsonian in Washington DC as far as quality of artifacts found here

I havent been to many museums in the Atlanta area to compare with, but overall it was enjoyable. Parking is free if you stay less then an hour. Otherwise its something like $6/2 hours. I got free passes from the library, which I would suggest getting. There is a lot of reading on the exhibits in small print, the grounds are kept in pristine condition, a bookstore is located inside the entrance that you can brose for free. Photography is restricted in some areas, flash is prohibited.

Driving to parking deck was a breeze. The walk to the Museum short. The greeter near the entrance was so interesting that me and my Mom laughed and talked with her. The exhibits far exceeded my expectations. I can go every day for a week and not, ever, get bored. The staff was knowledgeable, friendly, quiet and dressed to impress. The book store is equipped with topics that are amazing. To top it off theres Ebrik coffee and more. Yes I have to mention the Ladies rooms are sparkling clean.

While the museum was nice and the artifacts were interesting the way we were treated as guest was not what we expected. They made my girlfriend check her Kavu bag because it was too bag. While we were touring the museum we saw several people with big bags (pictures below) and a family with a stroller and a Michael Kors bag as well. Upon leaving we questioned why we had to check our bag and others did not. The desk clerk said because her bag was too big which was not true. If you are going to enforce a checked bag policy please make sure you do it for everyone. Not select groups of people.

I had never heard of the Carlos Museum before last week. Didnt expect much when we took our 9 y.o. son and 11 y.o. daughter this weekend, but boy were we in for a treat! The kids absolutely ate it up, and the only complaint from the adults is that we didnt get to spend enough time with the museums world-class Roman, Greek, and Egyptian artifacts. The Americas exhibit was offline when we went due to a moisture issue, but it was still a 5-star experience. Our dosent-guided tour was fascinating, and the bookstore rocked too. We will definitely be going back. Highly recommend it!!
