Excellent hiking destination. Its best to start your trip here early in the morning. Well worth the long hike to get here. Very beautiful and interesting historical place. Make sure that you bring enough snacks and something to drink.

Great hike but will make you sweat if you do the full loop to the mine and Mt. Lowe railroad (1750 elevation change and 6 miles). The old mine is now boarded up with metal grate but the exploratory tunnel less than a quarter mile up is open. Did not try the secondary opening above the old mine.

IMPORTANT : ENTRANCE TO THE MINE AS BEEN CLOSED.It used to be possible to make the hike into a loop and perhaps it still is,(we did it) but due to poor trail conditions, the best and “easiest” way to see the mine is heading straight up through the canyon. From the parking area of MillardCampground , follow a sign to Sunset Ridge for about 0.3 miles to a junction with the Sunset Ridge Trail, a single-track. Follow it around the south rim of Millard Canyon, getting some dramatic views, including the waterfall. At about a mile from the start, you reach a Y-fork. The Sunset Ridge Trail continues upward to the right, eventually rejoining the fire road. To get to Dawn Mine, bear left and follow the trail as it descends past a cabin, soon reaching the bottom of the canyon. Now the challenge begins. You make your way slowly up the canyon, crossing the stream bed several times. Navigation can be tricky, but there are many trail ducks that help point the way. In some places a semblance of the trail or evidence of hikers before you can help; the route usually sticks pretty close to the banks of the canyon.

Mine is closed so no way to enter it. The view along the river is nice at this season as there are a few water. Lots of plants and some animals can be seen. No sunlight along the river canyon but exposed at the top. Still its an fun hike as you can cross the river for several times

I have done this hole over a dozen times. One of my favorite hike to be honest. I was there yesterday (mid February) and the steam of the water down the mountains and the waterfalls were astonishing, hard to believe how beautiful it was. At this point it would be considered a hard hike, but in the summer I would say its moderate. It took me about 2:30 hours, going fast.4 stars because you cant see any mine ;).But totally recommended.

Excellent place to go for a hike under the shade of the trees along the riverbed of the Sunset Ridge Trail. Prepare for this moderate hike from the Millard Trail Camp to the Millard Falls, gain some elevation, and go over boulders to get to the mine. It does worth to do the loop to enjoy the way back to the camp the views of Eco Mt and Mt Lowe.

Nice hike. Went early, no problem parking and only a few hikers. Cool and shady most of the way but heats up in the afternoon.

The lower trail to the mine winds along the bank of a creek. It is shaded and gorgeous. The ridge above is a steep climb with little shade. If you take the ridge you will encounter mountain bikers who are almost always polite but it is impossible to walk the ridge and return trails without worrying that someone will barrel into you or run you over on a two wheeler.

Its a nice hike from Millard Canyon parking to the mine. The trail is in great shape after major work on it, but the mine has been closed off with a metal grate, cant enter it anymore.

The mine has been barred shut. This used to be my favorite hike around LA, and a great afternoon trek to take family and friends on. I went back today and the mine has been covered in steel welded bars......hopefully someone will work on removing them because that mine shaft was an amazing destination.

Used to be a really fun hike for experienced hikers but now it’s too family friendly. Ladders were added. Trees that were bridges were cut down and actual bridges were added. You used to be able to go into the mine and I guess now you can’t. Now I gotta find another fun place to hike...

Great time to go hiking. Its green everywhere, the creek is full of water; plenty of shades. This trail is much quieter than the Millard fall trail.

Great hike challenging and scenic very quiet not too many people on this trail they’ve added signs so it’s as difficult to find your way as it used to be. About 6 miles round trip. The sealed up the mom last year unfortunately. But the hike is still worth it. Glad I was able To go in the mine a few times before it closed up

This is a kool little hike about 5 miles round trip. Its nicely shaded almost entirely. There is a mine at the end of the trail but it is now closed to the public due to flooding. At least thats what could be observed from the outside. I think this hike would be best during the winter. Oh yea watch out of rattle snakes they tend to slider across the trail.

First, bring adequate water for the hike, its a fairly long trek in and out. The mine itself is often flooded, and can be difficult if not dangerous to explore, so please dont be knuckleheads!

Hike through shady canyons with waterfalls and rivers. Ponds with newt living in them. Difficult to get through. Trail starts very well maintained then fades into natural washes.
