The Russell Peterson Wildlife Refuge offers a different hiking/biking experience from most other Delaware trails. This is a raised or paved Marsh trail that runs from the Riverfront to New Castle. The scenery is somewhat desolate but still beautiful in its own way. Its a great way to get some exercise and enjoy views of a Marsh that you normally wouldnt get to see up close.

First time, will not be the last. Delaware does an amazing job with preserving their wildlife. This is a definite visit. They have a marsh walk that is brand new. Great for running, biking and walking. You need to visit.

Spend some time exploring this refuge at 3 levels: by the waterfront, from the elevated walkway, and everywhere in-between. We discovered a Hogwarts- like tree playground, a trickling rock waterfall, and stone-hive sculptures to explore. This refuge is free, dog-friendly, and open daily. It is less than a mile from the Riverwalk mid-point, and leads into the DuPont Environmental Center.

Though there wasnt much wildlife out today but the nature center was open. You can find some animals in there, dead or alive. The nature trails by the river are very cool and the giant tree sculpture/play area is very cool. The views from the top of the ramps are breathtaking and the long walkways that lead into the refugee are amazingly built structures. Lots of walking/running room there. Enjoy!

Make sure to go past the blockage in the middle when you need to turn to get here. That confused us since the sign is on the other side & the other road goes into a construction area. Nice area to walk around & hop on the other trail that goes to battery Park.

I like very much what they have done linking up with the Jack Markell trail. The tidal marsh life was awesome with birds, frogs, and turtles everywhere. I even got up close to a tiny fawn. Picture is posted along with a turtle next to the trail. Avoid Summer evenings; although a bit cooler and shaded in many parts, the insects can be overwhelming. Sunscreen and repellent highly recommended... and watch the weather forecast. The middle of the trail is a 30 minute walk in the rain if youre not prepared.

Great walking and biking (bikes can be rented on the 3rd floor of the main building) path through the marsh lands. Kayaks also appear to be available to rent to journey down the water way. There is also a smaller viewing area to be able get closer and be able to capture the wildlife. As it is just turning toward spring many animals were not viaible just yet, but the beginnings of new life were evident as the mating croaks of the frogs and small fish could be heard and seen along the walk. There are several species of birds, reptiles, mammals and fish that call these marsh lands home. Information on them can be viewed or inquired about in,the visitors center.Worth checking out, especially if youre a lover of nature. All animal sculptures in the information are models and most erred made entirely of wood, which is a plus.A fifth star cannot be awarded as there is a fair amount of trash within the marsh areas and the information area display cases were a bit strewn about. Additionally, the descriptive pieces forbthe displays were merely folded computer paper and positioned a bit off so the viewer has to consistently change there perspective in order to pair description and piece being described.

Its a nice place. A little bit of wildlife in the city. View of the city in the distance is great. There are 2 little trails, one in the woods and one over marsh. They have stations that teach about nature. They tend to leave a bowl of water for the dogs. Its really small, though. Enough to get away but not enough to explore much. Probably a good place to take a child to teach them. I teach my dogs about nature there.

Within walking distance of the city is this beautiful fresh water tidal marsh. The beautiful information station is staffed by extremely friendly and informative people. They have built a wonderful walkway out into the marsh which connects to a nature trail. Its an easy to walk, and you wouldnt believe the huge variety of animal life. Birders will especially like this place.Make sure to ask about how this amazing wildlife preserve was founded and maintained. I laughed at the absurdity of it.

With the new addition that was built to the nature refuge center I was able to explore the marshes and natural areas further in depth than I could have previously without taking a boat, kayak, or canoe. The new path is open to walkers, bikes, scooters, and I would imagine roller blades but you may want to check the latter. The path was freshly decked, clean and ready for use. I cant wait until the weather warms up to take my bike out and ride the path to Old New Castle. Of youre into scenic nature trails this new spot is where you should come.

My 3,4 and 8 yr old sons really love this place. They love going into the information center and checking out whatever little things they have going on in there. They love taking the short walk around the marsh and discovering little things here and there. Some days we get alot of action. Other days not much is going on. Such is life when dealing with nature I guess. We have seen Eagles, osprey, blue heron and the list goes on. My children are animal lovers to the cure and particularly fond of birds. If you or your children arent then it might not be fun for you. We have a great time whenever we go.
