The Mazamas is a great organization if you are interested in the outdoors and in making new friends. As one of the top hiking and climbing climbing clubs in the country they offer all of the related activities and education for all ages. If you want to learn to enjoy the outdoors in the northwest safely, this is the place. Theyve done a fantastic job transforming an old church building to meet their needs, including climbing walls for teaching the basics. In the winter we enjoy attending their Wednesday night travel programs, put on by fellow members.

Low-cost way to learn new outdoor sports skills, but most courses are also a time suck. Elitist attitudes are common; each small organization within the non-profit place high demands on likability instead of character quality.

I tried to cancel a camp for my child because of the worsening pandemic and increase in infection rates of Covid in children and was essentially told they needed the money to stay in business. Money over the safety of children.

Wonderful facility converted from a retired church to the home base of Portland/Oregon’s climbing/alpine community. Organization has multifaceted missions across all ages and interests.

As a newcomer, I thought the group was unfriendly and not welcoming. No conversation. All waking. Great workout but not very enjoyable. I could have walked alone and had more fun.

Dropped off my neice for day camp. This is an amazing non-profit in a repurposed old church. The day camp include trips to Mt. Hood, outdoor cooking, crafts, etc. They also have programs for adults and an indoor climbing wall!

Evening travel program on winter Wednesdays is often quite good. I dont mind taking an extra bus to go listen to those presentations.

Im currently taking the BCEP course and having a wonderful time. Not only do we learn backpacking, rock, and alpine skills but we get to hang out with a great group of people. The course is a big commitment at 7-8 weeks with a weekly class and 1 or 2 weekend days taken for training. In addition, there is a large cost for gear and the class itself. That being said, if youre interested in traveling safely in the mountains and finding friends to go with it is well worth the investment of your time and money. The mazamas also have many opportunities to volunteer with the community, get outside and be active, and take more advanced classes to continue your education. Its been a great experience and I recommend giving it a try! Even if you dont take the class, anyone can join a hike and meet someone new.
