Personal freedom started here for me, IDC what *anyone* has to say about Catholicism.A good priest is better than a heavily-armed soldier any day. Please, if you dont agree keep your comments to yourself. This is Holy ground and should be treated as such.

This is absolutely must visit in east Bay. The Cathedral was designed by Craig Hartman, it is the new mother Church of the Diocese of Oakland. Beautiful architecture beside lake Merritt. Visited in a quiet Sunday sit in quietly just feeling all the light shine through, amazing experience. This place open to public, you can just walk in.The innovation in this Cathedral is the usage of light with its walls. The wall are constructed of 1028 panes of patterned glass which defuse light into the interior. as the sun crosses over from sunrise to sunset, from the beginning of time to times fulfilment in Christ, the play between the glass and the wood generates different qualities of light through the day. at night, the cathedral become a beacon of light

The modern architecture is not to my taste—you can’t even tell it’s a church, much leas a Catholic church, until you’re at the door—but the bishop is orthodox, wise, and kind. And he believes!!!!

Since moving to Oakland 9 years ago, I have wanted to go inside this beautiful cathedral.I recently had the opportunity to visit this church, while attending the enterrment services of my friends mother. The simplistic beauty of the interior was so profound as was the service, very moving. It was a welcoming and inclusive place. I have been looking for a church to attend, I believe I have found it. The location is on the banks of Lake Merritt, just could not get any more beautiful. I promised my friends sister who lives across the country, that when I did l would honour her mothers memory through prayer and place some posies outside her final resting place. I was honoured to be invited to attend the services and rewarded with finding a church to connect with God and the community, once again.

Truly wonderful cathedral! Located at the Lake, beautifully designed, artistically unique in many ways. Much to appreciate in this holy place. Built in conjunction with the large Business complex recently built here as part of Oaklands redevelopment. Open every day to the faithful and to visitors. Good amenities and gift shop. Insufficient parking on weekdays for all of the businesses here, but on Sundays it is quiet and serene.

This building is absolutely beautiful, and definitely worth a visit. Im not religious, but the folks here were friendly and welcoming - and not at all offended by the fact that I stepped in just to scope out the architecture. They do hold open services and musical events which are free to the public. If youre not a worshipper, I recommend visiting outside of service times, and taking a tour of this lovely, iconic space.

This was beautiful, and the 1 hr tour (at 1pm) was totally worth it. I was amazed at the meaning behind all of the architectural details, of which there are too many to list. A few include: the cathedral is shaped like the intersection of two circles, which creates the christianity symbol. The image of Christ is made by making different sized holes in a metal screen. The reconciliation/confessional area is open to the light. Spacing in the slats of the front door follows the Fibonacci sequence. There are paintings from Incan artists from Cuzco, Peru in the 1640s in one of the chapels. The mausoleum is also beautiful and includes stained glass from the original St. Francis de Sales parish cathedral damaged by the Loma Prieto earthquake.

Always such a calming atmosphere and the architecture is amazing! I bring my boys here often. Sometimes we take a walk through the mausoleum that is underneath the church. Very peaceful and calming. A good place to go when you need to get grounded. There are many paintings and sculptures which has this place feeling more like a museum than a church.

The Cathedral of Christ the Light is the “mother church” - or spiritual home - of the Catholic Diocese of Oakland, where the Bishop of Oakland often presides at liturgical services. It is a place where Catholics throughout Alameda and Contra Costa counties can gather to pray and celebrate major holy days and events. It also serves as the territorial church for Catholics living and working in the downtown neighborhoods of Oakland. When the Parish of Christ the Light was created in 2006 it was formed from the former parishes of St. Mary-St. Francis de Sales and St. Andrew-St. Joseph. It’s unique and award-winning architectural design attracts many visitors. But that said, it provides an accessible, quiet and sacred place to be still and spend time with God. The mausoleum, which is immediately below the sanctuary is calm and soothing.

I sit in their manicured garden area that has bench seating and just chill and have a meal. Its quiet and uncrowded - except on Sundays - and is an excellent green space in the midst of a load of cold corporate buildings. The stylized fish shape of the Cathedral is innovative. The Cathedral has a bookstore and cafe as well.

The Cathedral Of Christ The Light, is my church. Upon completion of the complete remodel; I was nonplussed at the avant-garde, architecture. It took repeated visits and many years before I was able to absorb it. I prefer traditional {pseudo and actual,} gothic mediaeval designs; such as MAGNIFICENT Saint Dominics which was my church when I resided in the city. However, I am now able to appreciate the cathedral on its own merits. I very rarely attend Mass, as I generally prefer worshiping God alone. The beautiful park that is a part of the grounds; i.e., the Event Centre, is a peaceful, serene space to reflect upon ones relationship with God The Father, God The Son, God The Holy Spirit, AMENIt also contains a lovely Catholic shop where one may purchase many various spiritual accoutrements. I highly recommend visiting the cathedral, catholic or no. It is, inspite of its somewhat ungainly appearance, an intensely beautiful church. It is the Bishops Seat, complete with a subterranean mausoleum, housing the earthly remains of the faithful. There are also 12 crypts reserved for the past, present and future Bishops of Oakland.

Beautiful place, nice place to rest. Parking is available during mass and confession times: T/Th 11 to noon, W 6:30, Sat 4:20 to 5:15pm.( Lacks permanent adoration chapel). Confession times are limited to business hours, but better than other churches who only have one day one hour confession. Great place for meetings, plenty of masses though could have more, lacks community catholic events, promotes little to nothing catholic multiculturalism & faith, charges high fees(donations) for baptism or weddings or what not. Teaches dogma with difficulty, when it does, charges for what should be free (for people have already paid with mass collections) lacks core participation in issues of faith, lacks evangelization ministries. No priest, nuns or deacons available if one wants to talk to one.
