We went to an amazing show by an amazing performer. But:The venue itself is the one being reviewed so:Lighting is decent, the sound was great. The menu is meh, and the food is not really justifying its price. The drinks are super expensive. The worst part was that we got terrible table behind a column, and the waiter told us that we can maybe talk with the box office, and claimed that these are cheaper seats and that the partial view is indicated in the ticket selection. But it was not cheaper, nor indicted. So that was annoying...

Joe’s Pub is a downtown institution bringing cutting edge performers to New York City audiences for decades. From World Music to standard bad ass women like Sandra Bernhard and Justin Vivian Bond, this is the place to see and hear the next wave of entertainment. Catch this years Artist-in-residence Shaina Taub for one last Joe’s Pub performance in January. Can’t say enough about this up-and-coming star.

The shows are great but I really do not like the food here. Its extremely expensive but pretty basic. Kind of a shame. Also, for some reason i always get very confused waiters here. They forget my orders or put stuff on my bill i did not even order.... or they disappear with my credit card and it takes forever for them to return it. That happens all the time. Weird place.

Such a great space for performances. I came for Stephanie Chous Comfort Girl performance on 3/29/19 (which was great, but thats beside the purpose of this review). The staff who brought us to our seats were extremely friendly and professional. The seats themselves were a little close together, but still comfortable to sit on for an hour or two. The space was clean, nicely lit before the performance, and has a very chill environment with the candles and decor. Now, the food was tasty, but the price is high even for the area. We ordered the tacos (nicely seasoned, tender pork, could use a bit more depth in flavor with some additional ingredients, but tasty and I liked it), fried macaroni balls (slightly too salty) and fried calamari (never can go wrong and this is no exception). It came out to 51 dollars, but you are paying for the show/dinner experience so I didnt mind. Service was extremely nice and kept my glass of water full throughout the night.Overall, enjoyed my experience, things were a bit pricey though. Still would definitely come again for another experience if I had te chance.

We enjoyed the 25th anniversary retrospective eclectic choral show of the great Mx Justin Vivian Bond and vs friends and fellow performers Sandra Bernhard, Molly Ringwald, Kenny Mellman, Jack Ferver, Kate Bornstein and more on September 11th 2016 (grand finale show I believe). A wonderful, moving, profound and fun night in an intimate dining theater/club. The show, the place and the staff were incredible and the food good.A delightful memory!

Attractive performance space with good, friendly dinner/drinks service. This helped with the awkward situation of being seated at a table with strangers as I was alone. My show ticket was cheaper than it needed to be ($15), but the (minimum purchase required) food & drink options were ridiculously expensive. I passed on the $30 cauliflower dish and had an excellent burger and fries.

I was there for 1st time for really awesome dance show by ZviDance, which I recommend with all my heart to look for his shows.About the place itself, its designed really good and basically one can see the stage from every seat in the theater. The dishes we had, grilled brokolini and hummus with lentils, (those are also your main choices if youre vegan) were perfectly made and delicious.I would probably go back there regardless to the show they have at the moment.

Disappointed. Have been wanting to take a friend to see The Skivvies for such a long time. So the day I bought the tickets, there were some awesome talent billed. I did not realize that one of the 2 seats I booked would have a HUGE column blocking the entire stage. The floor plan did NOT make that clear. Also, every performer billed when I got the tickets decided to not show for the actual show! Hello? I want my money back!So the few songs performed were last minute, sloppy, off theme, and unrehearsed, and some talent was great, others kind of less than mediocre. Then, to totally ruin our supposed getaway from reality, the last (out of 10?) songs turns out to be about the school shooting - total politics. So this is what I flew a friend to NYC, and paid to see to get away from problems were going through?! NEVER AGAIN. You blew it suckas.

This is probably one of my favorite venue for dinner theatre. After its renovation the space is a bit larger and open not that you can have a bad seat anywhere in the house. I tend to like sitting along the railing bar style. My favorite venue for music in the city. Before I moved to NYC, I rarely went out to hear music, but the acts here are eclectic and fascinating. Ive never had a bad seat in the house and Ive loved every show Ive gone to. While there is a food/drink minimum and some stuff is over my budget, you can satisfy the requirement with their affordable yet delicious burger and fries. And they have a knack for booking great world music talent. As somebody with a particular interest in various aspects of Japanese music, I greatly appreciate how many Japanese acts theyve booked in particular. But quite frankly, everything that goes on here (and at The Public Theater in the same building for that matter) sounds interesting. After I went a few times, I googled the name of the person in charge of programming. Her name is Shanta Thakes and if youre reading this Ms. Thakes, keep up the good work! :)

Review №43

Nope, sorry. Yes, the shows can be cutting edge and great and diverse, but the effort just isnt worth it. See, buying a ticket just gets you into the joint. Once inside, theres a food/drink minimum. And after all that, youre still not guaranteed a seat. The hostess can shuttle you wherever she feels like, including in front of a swinging bathroom door. To guarantee a seat, you need to reserve a table. Me, I say to heck with these dudes; Ill go elsewhere.

This is a great spot to see a live show, but only if you reserve a table and pay the drink minimum. If you dont, youll have to make do with being crowded into the bar area, where the columns may block your view and youll have servers and other people walking back and forth and be frequently jostled. The drink minimum is annoying if youve already spent a considerable amount on the ticket, but its a lovely setting to see a show, so in some cases itll be worth the extra money.

For all Joes Pubs wonderful ambiance and intimacy, what really spoils the experience is the extremely short concerts length. I just got home from this location after seeing a wonderful performance by Jamie Leonhart. Her show was great, but the restaurant service was incredibly poor. Tl;dr: Go for the show, try to avoid ordering food if you can. When we got the tickets, they were for the last table available in the venue, so my coworkers and I expected it to be busy. Half of us arrived a little early, and were seated while we waited for our other half to arrive. Seeing as how there were only two of us seated at the time, our waiter stopped by and only dropped off two drinks, stating he would be back shortly to take our orders, etc.In the meantime, our other two friends arrived, and we waited about 10 minutes for the waiter to return. He dropped off two more waters, and asked what we would like. All of us ordered both food and drink, except for one who had yet to decide on anything. Our waiter said he would put our orders in, and then come back in a few minutes to grab hers. This all happened shortly before the show began.About 10 minutes later, after the show has started, our waiter returned to take the last order, but didnt bring our other drinks.5 minutes later, a random waitress dropped off the drink that was ordered later than the rest of ours, but nothing else.Another 10 minutes later, we finally get the drinks we ordered. No food had yet to be dropped off, but I assumed my simple fry order was just going to be delivered with the more complicated orders of my group.About 30 minutes after that(approximately halfway through the show), still no food to be seen. Our waiter returns, says the reason our food is taking so long is because the health inspector showed up at the start of the show and shut down the kitchen in order to inspect it. This is surprising to me, because not only did this show start a little after 7pm, but Id never heard of a health inspector halting restaurant activity at the height of a profitable night to conduct an inspection.Show ends, over an hour after we ordered our food, and nothing was brought to us. We asked that the order just be cancelled, and we decided to just go find cheaper food elsewhere. We were told its no problem, they apologized, etc. We mention that we didnt meet the $12 food/drink minimum that was set when the tickets were bought, and were assured there wouldnt be an issue; our waiter would just charge us for what we got.We receive the checks, everything is in order, I owe $7 and change for the one drink, cool. I put a $10 in the book, and my friend pays his bill with a card. A few minutes later, another waiter that we are seeing for the first time returns his receipt and card, but I dont get my change.A few minutes after that, our original waiter comes and asks if I got my change. I said no, he apologizes and runs to go get it. He comes back, tells us to have a good night, apologizes once more and is on his way. I open the book and I see that I didnt even get all my change back. All in all, I enjoyed the show, but the service left a lot to be desired. Our original waiter was a nice guy, but his kind attitude just cant make up for the rest of this places shortcomings. My parents have worked in the food industry since before I was born, so I like to think Im pretty accepting and patient when things happen at a restaurant. But Ive never NOT received a meal, poor communication, and only partial change on a bill before.

Joe’s Pub is home to one of my favorite events in New York City, the CMA Songwriters Series. These concerts occur about twice a year and feature some of the top country music songwriters, in an intimate setting, playing their hit songs. If you even vaguely like country music, these shows are seriously awesome and you should go check them out.The venue has communal seating, lit only by candlelight, giving off a dark and sultry atmosphere. And, while I don’t expect a music venue to have great food, Joe’s has a surprisingly tasty menu.My favorite menu item, Joe’s Pub burger, comes standard with a burger lover’s trio – cheese, bacon and caramelized onions. Instant heave. This burger is enormous. Joe’s Pub doesn’t shy away from toppings, as melted American cheese envelopes the burger, oozing down the sides and onto the plate. Gobs of caramelized onions and a healthy serving of bacon top the cheese and beef combo. At first bite you realize how tender and juicy the beef is. The bacon adds a hint of salt as the cooked to order meat dissolves in your mouth. The buns are nothing short of a challenge. They are enormous and put up quite a struggle for those trying to consume all vertical layers of bread, onion, bacon, burger and cheese in one bite. The fries don’t disappoint either. These thin and crispy potato sticks are doused in salt, perfect to keep you ordering more beer. The VerdictI love country music and that’s more than enough to keep me coming back again and again to Joe’s Pub. Seriously, the shows are awesome and you should check them out. A major plus is the delicious food. Joe’s Burger is my go-to meal every time I’m here and it always lives up to my hopes and dreams. Don’t think this place stops at your typical bar food either. The kitchen puts out dishes such as grilled branzino, orecchiette and flat iron steak as well. Great food at a great concert venue, check.

Thats about as many musicians that can fit on the small stage. This club is stylish, high-ceilinged, and perfect for a date night. Booked a seat online for the table in front of her mic stand; good value in a city where you can pay much more for a much-inferior venue and no guaranteed seating. Sound volume at the front table was comfortable and not overwhelming.Tables are tightly packed together; my seatback was touching the seatback at the next table over. This isnt all that much different from the Village Vanguard or Smalls. Birdland is much more spacious, in comparison, and a small tick more stylish and sophisticated. As other reviewers have noted, theres a $12 food or a two-drink minimum. I had a chocolate panna cotta, which was excellent value at $9, and a sparkling water, which was not -- also $9. On the other hand, the service was prompt and friendly.Id definitely go back.
