You cant go near it because of the barricades and Ive never seen it open for people to go inside even before 2020. Impressive looking building. History buffs might appreciate seeing it. The grounds around it are peaceful, pretty, and serene.

Great memorial to a great man. I was surprised to find that this was in Manhattan, it has the feel of something that belongs in DC. It isnt the most interesting thing to see in Manhattan but surrounded by modern America, it is nice to take a moment to remember the past and the struggles that our nation had to endure. The memorial was empty when I visited. I would have liked to see more people take an interest in such history and accomplishment, though it is a bit out of the way compare to other tourist attractions.

The area around Riverside Church is beautiful, with its parks, view of the Hudson River and old buildings. Among the many sites is also the General Grant National Memorial. It is a classic memorial in every way, in its construction and design. The view from here is beautiful, and after being here you can enjoy the nearby Riverside Park.

Once one of New York’s must-see monuments, this grand mausoleum now is too often overlooked by tourists. The area is full of interesting things to see. Be sure to cross the street to see the partially hidden gift shop and visitor center w/its short film and artifacts on display. Just a few hundred yards N is the Amiable Child’s grave and monument (see photo).

It was very somber but I didnt enjoy my trip. I even walked along riverside park for the first time. I didnt know I loved so close to this place so I hope to come back because I arrived with only an hr to view. Also, for those looking for the bathroom, if you look across the street you will see some pavillion esque area and some stairs to the left of it. Go down the stairs and to the right is the visitor center where the bathroom is.

One of my favorite places in all of Manhattan, perhaps because it is quiet and forgotten, or it is across the street from Riverside Church (beautiful in its own right), or maybe because the leading plaza is so peaceful. Or that it is an easily accessible National Monument from the 1 train subway one block away. Orrrr, it lies along Riverside Drive, a beautifully lined arterial with beautiful architecture that is quieter than the adjacent Riverside Park (noisy because the highway lines it to the immediate west). It’s ALL of those things! And Grant wanted to be buried (interred, not underground) in NYC bc his wife Julia lived in NYC and he wanted to be with wife...and if he was buried in Arlington, Julia could not be with him bc she wasn’t a veteran.

After 24 years of living in New York I made it up here. No reason it should take this long. Great visit and well worth the time. Across the street is Sakura Park with cherry trees, definately coming back for the blossoms in the spring. And after the visit we had a nice walk home (were on W96 street) in riverside park.Really good destination when you have 2-3 hours open on a weekend!

Grants Tomb was one of the first places I saw on my very first visit to New York in my teenage years. Now decades later I decided to visit it a week before moving out of New York City.I approached the south-facing entrance of the mausoleum and walked up the stairs, only to discover that it was closed for the day. So I snapped some photographs and walked across the street to visit Riverside Church, just one block south of Grants Tomb.I think that it is very impressive and it definitely looks good in this park-like setting, visible from quite a distance, and it is very close to Riverside Park and the Hudson River.

Be warned that the memorial itself has very odd hours - its only open for an hour every other hour or something strange like that. Also, all it requires is a quick tour as it actually only has about four rooms and theres not much on the walls to read. But if you cross the street and take the steps down to the gift shop, you can get your stamp and watch a short film. While the space is very small, the film was quite interesting and is played upon request. When we visited, mid-day on a Friday, there was no one else there.

History 101! What an amazing way to be buried and to lie in state in front of the entire world. The monument and burial site of president Grant and his wife is beyond belief. The site is historical and the whole family should visit it. The inside and outside our amazing feats of architecture. You can spend a great deal of time just wondering the history behind this burial site. Its tremendous. Its the mausoleum of mausoleums and theres no other president that is buried this stately. Its close to days a week but its worth the trip and the takes about an hour or so to go through it and read everything. There is a great sense of patriotism here. Its a bold way of saying that we rest in peace. Heres to President and Mrs Grant!

Whos buried in grants tomb? That was a question i have been asked all my life. Well if you go there you will discover it was the president Grants and his wifes final resting place. It is located right off the hudson river and is very big. It is kept clean and has history of the president located in the area. They are located in the middle of the rotunda in a above ground marble grave. The gift shop is located close to the main building for souvineers.

Grants presidency was not successful, mainly due to the failure of Reconstruction. But he was a great general who was largely responsible for winning the Civil War. And, most importantly, he was among a minority of people at the time who actively advocated for equality for the recently freed and enfranchised Black population. His tomb is a grand and majestic structure. It is a quiet place to visit that can be easily overlooked but it is definitely worth a visit.

Visited General Grants and his wife Julias tombs today and what an incredible piece of history nestled in the Upper West Side (Hamilton Heights)! We explored both the upper and lower levels where the tombs lay. Then the guard pointed us in the direction of the Visitor Center a few feet away. We headed to the Visitor Center which has a wealth of information on Grant, his uniforms, artifacts, even a movie giving a detailed account about his life, career and the family he and Julia created. Tamara (park ranger) was amazing! She shared so much information about Grant even showing us a binder filled with picts taken of Grants funeral procession in NYC in 1885!! This place is a must see Enjoy the picts taken below.
