Charles Island is accessible by sand bar at lowtide from Silver Sands State Park, but be cautious, the tide comes back in quickly and people can become stuck on the island, or worse, swept off the sand bar as the tide comes in by the strong current. Make sure to enjoy this Island as soon as the tide goes out, walk around the outside of the island and come back in quickly. The inside of the island is not accessible because it contains nesting birds. It is also nice to visit the island by water craft!

Lots free parking for CT residents, great boardwalk, havent been to the other bldgs yet, but they appear to be in great shape, so I suspect theyre maintained like the rest of the Park. The park # is online if you use Google Maps for finding their cite, itll call there for ya! WARNING: You may only get recorded messages.

The sandbar to Charles Island never became fully exposed today (Sep 23) to allow us to access the island even at low tide. There were others waiting also but eventually we all gave up and walked back to shore. Probably the last tenth of a mile of the sandbar was covered at low tide this morning. Was still fun to watch the seagulls dining on crabs and snails while we waited.

Always pretty! One of the nicer beaches for walking in Connecticut. Great long boardwalks(wooden, elevated walking paths) that cross the salt marsh and run paralell to the beach. Always beautiful birds to be seen.

This place has been renovated and looks great. It’s still in the process of being finished but overall it’s a huge change from what it used to be. The pier is gorgeous, the parking lot is huge, they’re bathrooms and great boardwalk. Plenty of beach and amazing views.

My wife and I go here to fish and to collect sea glass. A trip over to Charles Island is a must do. Just remember you have to do it at low tide. Between September and April. Oh if you get hungry visit the Greek Spot restaurant on E. BROADWAY.

Lots of people who were enjoying a stroll in the relatively warmer Connecticut Shoreline air. We enjoyed the park benches where we set and grill a couple hot dogs and sausages then we enjoyed walking out to the shore along the pier and the jetty. It was low tide and the water was calm and clear.

A great beach to visit! There is an island across the water that one can almost get there during low tides. There is a boardwalk for those who dont like walking on the Sandy Beach and for those who want to bike. There are benches so you can rest along the way. The sunset is over land yet still beautiful. After sunset there is often a pinkish hue in the sky. Enjoy!

I spent a couple of hours at the beach, walked the boardwalk and sat on the grassy area to read. Enjoyed my time, would go back again. Its kind of a long walk to get to beach so be prepared for that. Didnt go in the water so cant comment on that. Low tide brings out a sandbar, and you can walk out to Charles island.

Great beach!! Been going here since I was a kid and still go to this Day. Free parking (which heads up, effective next year only in-state residents will have the free parking so make sure to look at the state park site for out of state fees starting in 2019), a boardwalk that stretches from silver sands all the way down to Walnut beach (takes about half an hour to walk down to and back I believe) and starting next year they’ll be building public bathrooms and a restaurant on a boardwalk near the entrance to the beach. The only real downside to the beach is that you must walk a long boardwalk before even getting on the beach/other boardwalk. But other than that, it’s worth the trip!
