Stumbled upon some #BlackHistory, which sent me on a quest to find out more about the Jacksonville community. ⁣⁣On Saturday, August 27, 1960, 40 Youth Council demonstrators from the Jacksonville, Florida Branch of the #NAACP staged a peaceful sit-in demonstration at white-only lunch counters in downtown Jacksonville. The youths were countered by 150 - 200 white males wielding axe handles and baseball bats. ⁣⁣Although the organizers alerted Law Enforcement when they saw the armed men approaching, officers did not intervene until the protesters began to defend themselves and fight back.⁣⁣Many of the youths were injured, while others were able to find safety in the nearby Snyder Memorial Methodist Church.⁣⁣This event became a turning point in Jacksonvilles civil rights movement as widespread media coverage reported the events.I Love History Markers and I LOVE food trucks. SoulFood Bistro food truck gave us THE BUSINESS! Their food was fabulous and they provided generous portions. I cant wait to visit the city again.

Between the religious people playing loud music on Sundays and having half the streets shut down by police there is NO place to hardly set down and enjoy the park no benches at all and you can not even set on the brick wall. The country sherrif chash you away from the wall and loud music always being played in the park with overpriced ripoff food vendors with tables out long as the vendor is there trying to sell there overpriced food . And some police like to set in there personal cars and trucks and smoke cigarettes. And it just goes down hill from there.

In town for a conference and I needed a walk. My co-worker and I walked to this park. It is a fun place! There are sculptures done with a variety of materials, some of them commemorating historical events, some current events and some of them using materials that were recycled. There was a group of men playing cards, chess and board games listening to music at a comfortable level, a special section for children to play and a really nice park attendant helping people out and answering questions about the park. It was a really nice break from a really busy conference.

Holding a food festival at a park in the midst of a busy downtown sounds like a great idea until you realize how small the area is and how many homeless people make the park their daily home. Its difficult to enjoy a food festival when you cannot move around well due to the number of people in such a small space and the immediate surrounding streets smell heavily of urine.

I do love coming to Hemming Park for their variety of events that they host, but it saddens me that now the fountain has been blocked in by bars and hedges. I remember hearing something about it on the News. The city did so as a deterrent to the homeless from sleeping along the fountain. Although the park is still a cool location for events its really depressing to see. By doing this the city also took away places to sit to enjoy a bite to eat during ones lunch hour but at events as well thus limiting the amount of time spent at Hemming Park. These events host many food trucks and then the city takes away pkaces to sit? I definitely want to five 5 stars but the city has got to give more seating back.

One of the families favorite Jacksonville spots during the Summer. Theres an area with a splash park, park and plenty of picnic tables. Theres plenty of beach access points and a lake as well. We havent tried the bike trails yet but there always seems to be groups on the trails. Seems to be a popular spot for that as well.

Great Job to Christina Parrish, Mike, Ebony, Aaron and Becca!I recently attended the Bluegrass, Beer & BBQ event hosted by the Friends of Hemming Park. The event had an incredible turn out and was more than a success I think anyone could have imagined! The space was safe and clean and super organized!I don’t the Friends of Hemming staff expected such a large crowd. Despite this, they all pitched in and did what they needed to do (from bartending to changing trash cans) carry on with the show! I was incredibly impressed by how they all worked together in all types of task they all worked so hard to make sure everyone was having fun! Everyone had a blast
