The quality and breadth of their materials is extensive. I love the pergamenata, its a joy to use for calligraphy and illumination, and the preparation I have to do to it is minimal. John Neal is pretty much the best stocked calligraphy business on the East coast, possibly in the country. They have what you need, and the staff is super helpful and friendly. They do a lot of business by order, but, yes, you can in fact go into the store to browse the shelves. I used to live in Greensboro, where the JNB warehouse/store is located. It was (and by mail still is) my primary source for excellent bookbinding equipment without breaking the bank on Talas. Also, as a member of the SCA with an interest in recreating and experimenting with medieval illumination techniques, I love that JNB is aware of and caters explicitly to our craft with specialty sales and packs.

This is not a retail site, but you can order online and pick up from their location. If you are interested in calligraphy, fountain and dip pens, inks, etc, its worth taking some time on their website. The staff I spoke to were great.
