This is a challenging hike, and the history behind it gives it special meaning. At first, you are close to I-70 with sounds of traffic, but it dissipates shortly. You can make it to the lookout point in one excruciating mile (its pretty steep and rocky at first, and quite a workout that I dont recommend doing in the midday sun)! Take plenty of water and save energy for the sometimes slippery hike down. You can keep going after the lookout to the Memorial. This part gets pretty intense with canyon and wooden stair hiking. Usually very little foot traffic here.

Steep, but short trail takes you through typical terrain a fire fighter might see while working on a fire to an overlook across from the fatality site if the storm king/south canyon fire.

Very steep trail, not for the faint of heart. Gripping history here... do your homework before you go. This fire changed wildland fire fighting and safety concerns in a big way. The memorial at the beginning shows that.

This hike is pretty steep, but the trail is maintained fairly well. Our 5 year old hiked to the observation point on her own, but someone helped her hike back down because of the steepness.

Definitely dont underestimate this trail. Hardcore for sure. Not very long but mostly straight uphill. Very beautiful memorial. Definitely does a great job commemorating Don Mackey and his fellow firefighters. As a firefighter myself, From the same valley Don was from, Im very grateful for this memorial.

Loved it, challenging if you go late in the day because it gets very hot. Hard to imagine doing this hike like the men and women who lost their lives carrying all that equipment

Memorial trail for fourteen wildland firefighters who perished in 1994 while fighting a wildfire in the area. Great hike, with a steep start and some nice views. But also a good place to visit to contemplate the meaning of service, sacrifice, and to learn.

Short and steep with amazing views. Felt like I was traveling through jurassic park. Bring boots, tennis shoes wont work since it can get quite steep and dusty. Lightly trafficked, only saw 4 other people over a 3 hour period

A little hard to find, but just follow the frontage road until you come to a dead end. A steep hike, but not too long.
