A nice enough park. Trees, grass, wildflowers, an indian mound, and a nice view of the river.

Stopped here at the high king tide today. Usually theres a beach but the water pushed by high winds of the past week plus the king tide have covered it today. Almost covered the docks as well.

Seeing this place now with my kids takes me back to when my mom took me there more than 35 years ago. The great oaks are that much older and just as beautiful. Now there is info about our native American culture that was here on the treasure coast added to the info about the fort itself. Nice breeze and view of the river.

Old Fort Park is very much old Florida. There is a midden and lots of informative placques showing how the fort was laid out. It is in an area of moss covered trees located on the Indian River. A great place to eat your lunch and soak up the history of the area. Never seems to be crowded. Commanded by Col Pierce. I live in the area and go back time after time

I dont dislike this place, it is just very small. It only has a few benches to sit on but you can see a small part of the Indian river from there.

Small parking lot....could be filled. Its a nice quiet area. I came there to wade fish ...the sand beach is narrow but allowed you to easily walk along the water of Indian River...which is not a river. Clean water with solid Sandy bottom.

Is better since the lions club rehabed it and put up information kiosk. Should have built more parking and down on the riverside with kayak launch boat dock and sculptures to Col Pierce and cheif wildcat up by the indian mound. Doing a living history there as seminole war since tgat is what our little town was named after.

I feel a lil let down that a park with this historical history isnt kept up with..besides the few plague stands that share the forts history theres absolutely nothing else to share in its historical site..besides the dirt mound that i guess the fort was built upon..the park itself looks unkept and a bit shabby to be honest this site should be well maintained and be presented to the public with the honor it deserves as being a florida and the United states past history..

Interesting if you like history. Nothing really to see though. One of the informational signs was removed. Sad part was the dirty diapers when the trash can was only 40 feet away.

Old Fort Park is located across the street from the Indian River Lagoon. It is located on the National Register of Historic Places and it turns out quite a bit of history took place here. The park was an important burial site and the large hill in the center of park contains the human remains of the Ais tribe from 1,000 years ago. The Ais were once Floridas largest group of indigenous people. They were hunters and gathers and their territory ranged from Central Florida to Jupiter. What we know about them comes from the journals of Jonathan Dickinson who was captured by them in 1696 after his ship was wrecked. By 1740 they had been completely wiped out by European invasion and slavery. After the Ais died out the land the park now sits on later became the site of Fort Pierce which was built in by the US military during the Second Seminole War. The fort was named for Lieutenant Colonel Benjamin K. Pierce who was the brother of Franklin Pierce who would become president. The fort served as General Thomas Jessups winter quarters. Jessup attempted to force the Seminoles west of the Mississippi on the Trail of Tears. During the battle of the Loxahatchee in Jupiter the army suffered four casualties including their doctor. They were forced to retreat back to Fort Pierce. The fort never saw battle and was decommissioned in 1842 and destroyed by a fire in 1843. A plaque commemorating the fort was placed in the park by the Daughters of the American Revolution in 1925.Today you can climb stairs to the top of the burial mound although there are signs warning that digging and metal detectors are forbidden. Graceful old trees draped in Spanish moss are the only eyewitnesses left to the incredible history that took place here.
