Great, short walk/hike close to town. Fairly level (for Flagstaff) throughout. Nice hike/lunch spot. Hook into the Elden Lookout or Pipeline trails if your outdoorsy soul doesnt get enough on this loop!

Dont let the name fool you, you need to be in good shape to complete this trail. It is worth the effort as it is absolutely beautiful. Im from Dallas, and we dont have anything like it there. This trail alone makes me want to come back to Flagstaff. I cant wait to see what else this amazing city has in store for my son and me.

Totally awesome! Magnificent trees. It was a nice leisurely trail that turned a little adventurous as you climb up the mountain. Overall easy trail down hill is in direct sun and can be a little slippery. I would definitely recommend this trail.

Four years in Flagstaff so Ive done this trail countless times. Perfect for those coming from lower elevations but want some kind of challenge. Recommend clockwise so rocky / gravely parts can be done uphill and the mostly gentle slope is downhill. Havent seen deer recently but you might get lucky. Recently painted arrows help keep on the trail.

The view is great but there is no map and the trail splits into so many paths and its very easy to get lost on the trail. No maps at all. I really wish there are more sign boards with little map. Thanks to All trails map. Otherwise it would have been a rough day.

Beautiful area, many little trails that lead off the main trail, there is a loop and a lookout. The trail is heavily trafficked and can get a view of the town. The fatman rock is a natural beauty and very fun to climb/explore/observe. Many interesting alligator junipers and other plants along trail, including yucca, prickly pear, and ponderosa trees.

Very nice trail that is good for all skill levels. It was well-maintained, but my only complaint was the lack of signage for directions. The map posted at the entrance wasnt very clear, and there were so many other trails that went off of the main trail that it gets confusing where to go. My group and multiple others got lost.

Lovely hiking loop if you want to see the unique Flagstaff landscape with great views. It’s an easy to moderate 2.4 mile hike with 2/3 of the loop shaded by pine, juniper, and alligator bark trees. I recommend the hiking counter clockwise since the back half is mainly sunny and downhill.

Great trails. Always clean and every one is polite and friendly. Most people give you plenty of room to pass through or go by with plenty of social distancing. Trails for people trying to be challenged or just get a good hike. Fatmans loop is great to do if your in a hurry or if you have little ones with you. Look out trail is the harder more challenging trail!

Dont be fooled by the name of this hike! It is not for fat men lol. This hike is incredible on so many levels! The fact that its a loop, the wildlife, the view, the climb, the fresh air, the trees and rocks to climb, its just amazing! Highly recommended for all ages.

Extremely hard hike to Mt Elden especially if you are not acclimated to the elevation in Flagstaff. Very challenging workout. Would reccomend poles as I didnt bring any and was in agony on descent. No bathrooms pack in pack out. Parking can be hard to find and tight or hard to get out. I couldnt find trail markers once I started from the last sign. People bring pets but I didnt see many children on the Mt Elden trail. The rocks and dirt can be slippery. I seen others slip and I slipped myself. The trail zigzags to the top. Its straight up then straight down. Not alot of shade unless you go very early morning.

Dont be fooled by the name! This is a rigorous hike. Lots of rocks and climbing and tons of fun. Its also nice to have the option to head up to Eldens Peak (even though I didnt take that option on the hot summer day that I hiked the loop).Amazing views without that much effort.

This was my first trail above 5000 feet and I could tell a difference in my endurance almost instantly, just with the amount of air I was having to suck in lol. Fat mans loop took me about 2 hours so be prepared fun trail with some nice views bring some hydration to be safe not an easy trail i would say moderate and is indeed (as the name implies) a loop so if you stop you just walk back the same way you came...good trails my friends and enjoy.

Great workout.Ended up doing both the Elden Lookout Trail AND the Fatman’s loop trail.Fatman’s loop is definitely an easier trail. Great for beginners, and those with children/dogs/ect.Elden Lookout Trail is definitely more difficult, but more rewarding once you summit. There were definitely times were I was huffing and puffing, but I enjoyed every minute of it.Hanging out by the Fire watch tower at the top was icing on the cake.Limited parking. I started the trail at 6am on a Sunday, and I was the only one there. When I came back to my car roughly 3 hours later, the place was completely packed.

Great morning hike that’s perfect for beginners/families/lazy people. We came around 7:30am on a Saturday and it took us about two and a half hours to finish it (we got lost and veered off to a different trail before doubling back). It was flat in the beginning and there was a slight incline that involved climbing over some rocks but it’s nothing too difficult. There’s enough signage in the beginning to point you to the different trails but we made a mistake when it was coming back in going down a different trail (totally our bad, we weren’t paying attention). There was plenty of parking when we arrived although when we left, the lot became decidedly more full. There’s plenty of shade if you turn right first when going up the loop, while the descent is sunnier with more rocks and less trees. There was no trash can or restroom at the trailhead. Overall, a fun hike and good way to listen to the trees rustle and enjoy nature.

Excellent location for hiking or biking. Perfect for families and small children with the shorter loops. The area smells of pine and magic. You cannot beat the refreshing mountain air of Flagstaff

Ja
Review №54

Nice views and a moderate climb on either side. The left side of the loop is through chapparal and rougher terrain. The right side of the loop has some large boulder formations, is mostly through a Ponderosa Pine forest, and the trail is a little less rocky. It was challenging at times having to carry our toddler through many parts, but should not pose any serious challenge to an experienced hiker. I wouldnt call it easy though, contrary to what I saw on some sites.

Make sure to have a working GPS if youre not familiar with the trail, it can be misleading at times and there are be few markers

St
Review №57

I wouldnt call this an easy walk necessarily. If youre fit at 500 ft above sea level, this jaunt will still have you thinking, I thought Crossfit would fix this? If youre not fit? Prepare to second-guess every life choice you have ever made Fatmans Loop is a good hike under two hours. Hit it before midday with extra water and snacks and veer off onto the Ranger Fiire station path at the top.Its not an impossible hike. There is some steep uphill walking and narrow twists and turns. But once you make it to tbe top of the loop, its easy sailing downhill.

Review №60

Easy hike they said! Ha! Maybe for mountain goats and triathletes. It takes about 2-1/2 hours for a person who lives at sea level, but it’s well worth it. If you go counter clockwise in the loop as you ascend there are plenty of nice rocks to sit on and enjoy the scenery, and it’s more shaded. The descent going counter clockwise has some tricky ankle turners, but less shade so you’ll need some water back at base.

Its not too rigorous is intense and at its highest points you get some gorgeous scenic views of the surrounding mountains and town of Flagstaff. Don’t let the name fool you; this is a strenuous hike a good portion of the way up Mt Elden. But it’s not long. Children 5-10 should be able to do the loop. The east part of the loop is shallower and more interesting but longer with cool trees and rock gardens. Views are good but are east toward Sunset Crater and the mall. Parking is atrocious and completely inadequate on weekends. Don’t get parked in; leave your vehicle by the road not in the lot especially if you’re driving a long truck!
