Fun place to go for a walk or just hanging out with the family

The best park in the dekalb area. Plenty of winding trails and a great variety of ecology to admire. The district mows way too much though, and has let honeysuckle, ragweed, and other invasive species to get out of hand.Looking forward to the day where the pig farm to the north is expropriated so the screams and stench from the farm no longer linger. The park would do well to expand considering how few ecologically healthy areas there are in the region. Since there arent many places like Afton, it can get a bit crowded.

Love to take my two small dogs walking thru here. Also great place to relax for picnic with family and friends.

Theres a lookout, trails, benches, grills, restrooms and plenty of shade. Simply beautiful! Wouldnt recommend fishing here tho. The water is filled with various debris and the lines get stuck and snap. Also your children will complain that it smells like manure by the water. Which it does. lol Still, a very decent day to spend with the family.

Great but no one wore masks

One the finest forest preserves in DeKalb County, IL. A 4.5 mile trail will take you around and through the entire preserve. Excellent place to bird watch, observe local wildlife, have a picnic, or take a hike. Restored prairie is lovely especially in the Fall.

It was certainly a beautiful place to visit, I hope its well preserved in the time to come future walks and visits.

Love this forest preserve. Lots of nice trails, a small lake where you can fish, an overlook, and picnic areas. You will see lots of native prairie plants in the summer. It is a natural habitat, so dogs need to be leashed from late spring through the fall to allow nesting animals a chance to grow up. Twice a year, May ans September, stargazer group have an open night for viewing the stars through some incredible telescopes.

Terrible fishing spot. No bass here. Dont come here.

Lots of blacktop or nicely mowed paths for nature walks through this prairie restoration. Great for birdwatching, too! Several parking areas and picnic tables and shelters. Water hydrant, mowed lawn for games.

This place has always been a nice retreat. It doesnt get super crowded and theres a variety of terrain, depending on what youre looking for. Plenty of paved pathways good for handicapped too.

Great place to walk the dogs, or just to walk

Beautiful place to hike an hour or two. Its mostly prairie so you can see a good distance while you hike and throughout the summer there are beautiful wildflowers all around you. There is even a seperate area where you can hike with dogs off leash. I highly recommend.

We enjoy traveling to different parks and forest preserves to walk in. This forest preserve is one of the best in the immediate vicinity as it it clean and well taken care of. The driveways and trails were well manicured and looked very nice!

Its a beautiful spot with plenty of trail for walking. Also a great spot if you are looking to fish. Plenty of space and shelters to host large events along with grills.

It had some frogs and some pretty nice bridges which was very nice, but every time I go there I hear screaming which isnt really that nice to be honest.

Its are favorite park, we got married at Afton.We took are kids for cooks out a lot there, also had lots of imaginary adventures.Now are familys also meet for cooks out at Afton. Enjoy the time with friends & family.

Pretty scenery, nice trails and prairie. Has plenty of secluded bench areas which is nice. Only main issue is the pig farm down the road, when the wind is just wrong.

This is a very scenic generally quiet place with good walking paths. Relaxing atmosphere and good place to take family, friends to cookout or spend time outdoors.

I went here to see the Geminid Meteor Shower 2017, because it was the closest place to stargaze near Chicago. It was amazing. It’s small but is perfect if you’re looking for a place for solitude.

Beautiful, quiet and clean!

We were there today with my little dog. I pulled off easily 30-40 ticks. Plus I had ticks on me! He is on tick medicine and he still had that many. Just way too many ticks to deal with for now. I love it there, I truly do.

Love the park but people are not picking up after there dogs. I have a dog and do pick up after her and would like others to be like minded. It just helps everyone. Ty have a gd day.

Nice local natural space to visit

There was no trash to be seen, the whole place was taken care of very well. Plus, I got out of a cross country race because of lightning.

Great plant diversity for a DeKalb county preserve. Very well maintained as well.

My boyfriend and I came to this place looking for a quiet, scenic walk to enjoy on a beautiful sunday. There was a big picnic going on at the entrance to the south, so we ventured north where there was a family at the picnic tables but literally nobody on the trails. The walk was exactly what we wanted, there were wildflowers everywhere, butterflies and dragonflies all over, and there was a little lookout tower that you could stand on and see the fields and wind turbines in the distance. It was really cool until we got to heading west on the northernmost trail... In short, there is a slaughterhouse JUST outside the forest preserve, that you can actually see on the map, at the western side of the northern edge. We started hearing the screaming of pigs and awful mechanical noises and it really put a damper on our day and I feel I may be haunted by the last shrieks of those pigs for the rest of my life.

This is a hidden gem as far as prairie parks go. Excellent place for a run through the country side.

A nice, quiet place with well maintained trails to run. We came here often.

I love how secluded this park is.... theres a huge lake with supposedly a lot of bass in it, but its so full of vegetation, its impossible to reach the middle of the lake. although if your into panfishing, you might enjoy yourself.... today i caught about 12-15 nice size blue gills, and lake perch..dont forget your bug spray.
