Great local trails. We hiked for about 3 hours this weekend, it was beautiful. We did run into a copperhead but thats just nature, made for some excitement. Saw a neat turtle too. Trials are all in great condition and anyone can walk them.

Lots of work completed and continues since my last review. Lots of wildlife, even spotted a bald eagle take off from the treetops. The boardwalk has been fixed and reopened . You may however find an occasional gate closed as I was told the new electronic ones fail to open when there suppose to. Good job so far Park Service keep it up.

Wonderful area to walk and hike! There is never any trash scattered about which is awesome!! Theres several entrances with different sights to see at each, but they are all connected by the trails. There are handicapped fishing areas, and canoe launches . The only cons-- no bathrooms at any entrance, no barbequing, and the boardwalk is still closed since the 2015 hurricane... All in all it is still a wonderful place to spend a few hours walking, having picnics, fishing, or just enjoying nature!

Beautiful place to take a walk! There are several foot paths and bike trails to choose from. There is a lovely area by the lake with picnic tables and a shelter if you bring lunch! Of course, always pack out what you pack in!

I love this place, and the refuge in general. I use the kayak put-in, the picnic area for rest stops, and the trails for mountain biking, hiking, and observing/photographing wildlife. Its a great place to see a variety of plants & animals and beautiful scenery. Otter Boardwalk is really cool (and back open). Im thankful to the DNR staff who patrol and the volunteers who help maintain trails. My only suggestion is for a port-a-pot at the fishing pier. Ive been on hours-long paddling or hiking excursions and had to hide behind a tree to pee (not gonna lie). It would also be nice to have direct access to the kayak put-in, but I understand why its restricted (people pulling in trucks and tearing it up). I highly recommend exploring this gem.

Great trails to hike, ride bikes, birdwatch, fish and walk dogs on a leash. The Boardwalk is open after being closed for a few years. Plan ahead, there is no drinking water or public toilets. If all visitors pack out their trash and leave only footprints, all can continue to enjoy the Refuge.

Review №27

The walking/biking trails here are great! There is moderate elevation changes but nothing too major. Nature is on full display in these woods so be sure to bring a camera and be careful not to step on a snake (like I almost have.)The only reason I havent gone with a 5 star rating is because there are quite a few trees down on the trail designated specifically for bicycles. When I spoke with the gentleman who maintains the trails to inform him of the downed trees he brushed it off and said that the bike trail isnt his responsibility which I can understand, but it still takes away from one of the main attractions of this location. The rest of the trails however, are in excellent shape and offer a quiet and secluded environment for those looking to escape the city and explore nature.

Cox Ferry Lake is really GORGEOUS, serene, calming. Its clean, safe and organized. The only complaint I have is there should be benches close to the parking lot and around the water instead of just 1 on the other side of the lake. A physically disabled person wether temporarily or permanently would not be able to farther than the pier.

Theyre working on reopening a lot of the boardwalk but there are still a lot of trees down. We rode on the trails on bikes and were able to piece together a 5 mile ride. We didnt see much wildlife but it was winter. There were a few people fishing. It appears to be catch and release.

My experience is in the park off Jackson Bluff. Many of the mtn. biking green trail markers are missing, leaving a small section. Part of the blue trail and all of the boardwalk are closed. I use the short orange, yellow, and white trails for easy gravel trail biking. Nice lake with catch and release fishing.

Great if you love primitive nature! Lots of trails and ponds, lakes, and marshes. All trails are marked well and most are wide with gravel. There are picnic tables and a shelter. There are multiple entrances/parking areas throughout the reserve. There are handicap accessible fishing piers/areas also. The boardwalk is still being repaired from the hurricane though.

I really enjoyed our little walk today down the red path. The trails are nice and wide and well maintained. We entered the refuge by way of Gray Lake Blvd. There are picnic tables and trash cans and plenty of parking. With the many walking trails to choose from we chose the red path, around the large pond and it was nice.

Some great hiking trails, but the effect of Hurricane Florence still exists as one of the trails is blocked off by a tree. The scenery there is amazing, especially on a clear sunny day.

Open sunrise to sunset. This is a great place to go if you enjoy being outdoors, fishing, walking nature trails, or simply going on a picnic. THE TRAILS ARE NOT STROLLER FRIENDLY! As a dad that tried to take his son with him to go fishing I strongly recommend that unless your child can walk on their own, do not attempt to take strollers on the trails. The trails are easily walked but far too rough for a stroller. There are designated spots to picnic, but these spots are not along the nature trails and there are no grills. This is probably the best nature park aside from going all the way to either Myrtle Beach State Park or Huntington Beach State Park. The amenities are not much but its very quiet and very clean. I give it 4 out of 5 stars for having trails not suitable for strollers.

USFWS land at its best. The conway area has several access points to the Waccamaw National Wildlife Refuge. One is at the end of west cox ferry on the left when you see the waccamaw river. There is another off of Jackson Bluff road...stay straight near GSWSA treatment pond and the road goes downhill through the swamp and up to the parking area (dont stay after sunset! gates automatically close and lock for the evening). These two areas mentioned are connected through the woods on hiking trails and bridges. There are a few ponds and river access on the property. Fishing requires a SCDNR freshwater fishing license on any ponds or the river. The whole area west of jackson bluff towards the river is non hunting. There is a nice metal dock and a kayak launching area. Bring your USCG approved life jacket and a whistle while paddling. Night time requires possession of a flashlight on a paddling vessel but the grounds area close to public at night. Visit the USFWS Waccamaw Refuge website and read all of the property use brochure rules and regulations.

I didn’t see any wildlife & not many trails. Not really much there. For Horry County it’s a gem. Not many trails or natural parks around here. Just ball fields. Horry County spends all their money on drawing tourists and not residents. This is a National Wildlife Refuge. Since it’s run by the US Fish & Wildlife l guess this is why Horry County has a piece of forest to enjoy. Wish there were more. I like a good hike and they are hard to find here.

Some nice and easy hikes - can see most or all of the trails in a day. Gives a nice glimpse of wetland environments. Has docks to access the river and also has mountain bike trails, so plenty to do here. Trails are well marked. Plenty of parking but no restrooms. Between Myrtle and Conway so its a good place to stretch the legs if traffic turns out bad!
