Passed this monument on Desplaines Street Chicago. Quite unobtrusive but on reading the plaques I was emotionally overwhelmed for many reasons. The punishment, the act and the sufferings , all happened because someone acted in a minute without thinking of the consequences. Lessons to be learnt from history

Most of the world, outside the U.S., celebrates labor day on May 1st. That started here in Chicago. Few locals know the worldwide suggest l significance of the history of labor in Chicago. This monument is an appropriate reminder of the struggle of workers.

What am important if not underappreciated social event that reminds us of the struggle for worker rights. This event resulted in support for the eight hour work day and international recognition of May 1st as a day of workers solidarity.

W Pearson is right, but it was moved over to Union Park for about a year from 2016-2017. The funny thing about Google not moving it back is that streetview shows it back at 175 N Desplaines.
