Stopped here for lunch before heading up to Monticello, and it was fantastic! We really appreciated the historical setting, but the real star was the food. They serve a buffet of southern classics, with mains like fried chicken and pulled pork. Sides included black eyed peas, green beans, cole slaw and corn bread. It was all so delicious! They allow you to get your own for for the first go around, but seconds are served by the wait staff. They have limited seating due to the virus, but there are still plenty of tables. Its also worth checking out the grounds for the other shops and exhibits. This is a great place to stop and eat if youre in town.

Save room for peach cobbler & ice cream! Highly recommend stopping in after a visit to Monticello. They are only 5 minutes from each other. $18.xx for each adult all you can eat buffet. You will definitely get your moneys worth here! Youre shown to the buffet, grab your food, find your own spot at a table, eat, and your waiter will come by and ask what you want for seconds from the buffet and theyll grab it for you. Everyone is dressed in period clothes. The atmosphere is rustic and cozy. Bathrooms were very clean. This place gets busy, up to 500/day in the summer (although not so much this summer due to covid). After your wonderful filling meal be sure to walk it off by walking down to the general store, mill, and other out buildings. They have a few out buildings that are of the time period that you can visit. (Check with them to see if theyre open this season) They have a small gift shop where you can buy a BRICK OF TEA. Yes, like the tea at the Boston tea party. Highly recommend stopping in and getting a great meal.

The fried chicken in this place is cooked to perfection. Just like my grandma used to make it in the country when I was child. The food is overpriced and the menu a tad bit limited for my preference in a buffet, but overall it was a great meal. The draw for this place is the history. Some of the buildings are a couple of hundred years old, and they have kept them as they were in the period of the day. It is set back in a beautiful area with benches to sit outside and enjoy the scenery. And go check it out. Everyone enjoys it there.

The fried chicken and grilled chicken were AMAZING!!! All the food was awesome and the tomato stew was so delicious we had to get the recipe. Service and atmosphere was great!!! Our waitress Paulette was fantastic and funny with a warm hearted personality. We had a very busy weekend between pumpkin patch and apple picking and our oldest son had a little emotional moment while eating there and Paulette was very quick to try and cheer him up and bring him a cookie and some peach cobbler. Also he didnt have much of an appetite so she went out of her way to box up his food so he could have it later. She truly made the experience an awesome one!!! I would recommend asking for her as your waitress if you go there!

Colonial themed building and staff. Dimly lit, not an issue for me and lends itself to the theme of being candle lit. If you have issues with low light, it may be an issue.Staff is amazing; very friendly and efficient. Buffet. The food is really good but is a bit limited in overall selection. They are known for their fried chicken and there is a reason they are, it is amazing. After your 1st run through the buffet line they will bring extras out to you at your table and take orders for more.Extremely popular spot especially on the weekends. Right around the corner from Carter mountain traffic sometimes be a pain.

Small but Delicious buffet of Southern Fried Chicken, Grilled Chicken and bbq. Tasty cornbread and biscuits. Sides are green beans, coleslaw, beets, and the INCREDIBLE stewed tomatoes. But if you go up for seconds...prepare to be EMBARRASSED! Both the waitress or the staff at the front of the line will practically shout saying... ARE YOU GETTING SECONDS? Everyone will turn and stare like either youre too fat to get 2nds or you shouldnt even dare to get another helping.

We ate here on our way out of carters orchard today. The place was very cool and had lots of fun stuff to see with the kids. As for the restaurant itself, the food was great, especially the fried chicken. The staff was helpful, polite, and accommodating. Due some of the recent COVID restrictions having to only use every other table there was a bit of a line that formed outside, but we really only had to wait 10 or 15 minutes. Overall it was a great experience and we will be returning when were in the area.

Nice little southern eatery attached to a cool period tavern. Food was pricey for a buffet, but good and plentiful. The biscuits and bbq pork were my favorite. Lollie our waitress was very nice. One trip across the Atlantic, several transfer flights, and a Lyft ride bought me here. I know many people who love this wonderful tavern for its most original buffet! I think the price is high for what they serve, but the ambience is astonishingly representative of the colonial era, I suppose that partially makes up for that. The fried chicken was definitely the showstopper with the peach cobbler. The former was definitely not like anything I had before in my native country. I ate so much roasted chicken, rabbit meat, grilled sardines, and fried salted codfish (Bacalhau). It was nice to have something deep fried and not from the ocean for once. The chickens surface had a nice dry crunch with a special flavor rich with spices and delicately coated with the right amounts of dough. The sizes of each chicken were humongous! I surmise that special practices in breeding Virginia chickens made them more palatable after consuming them! The peach cobbler I actually thought it was peach crumble or peach crisp (derived from apple crisp) because it was not as saturated as an actual cobbler. It felt a lot more like a pie than anything else in my opinion, which was good and even better with a scoop of fresh dairy ice cream. I could imagine turning the dessert into a warm mug of medicinal spiced peach herbal soup for the most resistant cold viruses ever. The other vegetables were really good too because they tasted fresh from the garden, but I did not care for them as much as I did for the chicken and the cobbler because they eclipsed them in taste! The gift shop had some cute merchandise especially the cups which I decided to buy to serve Porto wine to unsuspecting guests. Its close to the UV and Monticello which makes the location particular special. I am telling my friend at said university to try out this place because he has not found a good restaurant to dine at during his final years in graduate school. At the same time, I am also writing on behalf of my friend who actually came here in 2008 with his history class during a trip to Washington DC. I will start with his story right now. He and the entire class got sick not too long after arriving at DC, they were on their way to Monticello and Mt. Vernon, understandably everyone did not feel like eating anything and just wanted to go home to sleep. They met up with some of the costumed staff who invited everyone to try the fried chicken and peach cobbler. Although my friend like everyone else was initially unenthusiastic, he still decided to give the food a try after waiting for like 20 minutes (one of his friends suggested to him to at least eat a little bit). He actually forgot that he had the cold especially when trying the peach cobbler. When his appetite returned, he then had more of the chicken and the black eye peas. It was a good experience for him, especially since there was some secret ingredient that could temporarily short circuit the aggravating symptoms of a bad cold. I guess thats why the Tavern has been ranked first place this year in the statewide rankings?Por Isso, quando eu visito o estado de Virginia outra vez, eu voltarei a este local. Tenho que Dizer que é o melhor frango frito que já comi neste mundo enorme. Já sinto falto deste lugar. Toda vez me lembro de minha viagem à costa leste, esse lugar me vem à mente. Com cada membro da equipe tão simpatico e bem vestido, é dificil perder uma experiencia gastronomica especial. Com Isso dito, eles devieram filmar a telenovela morangos e acucar aqui.é realmente um lugar muito bonito e belo!

Went there for the yuletide dinner. It was a rainy night and it would have been nice if they had some kind of cover over the stairs. They ask you to wait there before being let into the restaurant. The buffet has sweet-potato casserole, yellow squash casserole, green beans, filling, red skin mashed potatoes, turkey and Virginia ham. I was hoping see some of their fried chicken. You sit on stools, which werent bad. The lighting was mostly candles, so it had an authentic feel. During the meal we were entertained by a few singers and musicians. All in period garb.Dessert was really good. The gingerbread with the bourbon sauce was very good.Overall I will go back to try their chicken. It was a nice experience.

An interesting place for a buffet lunch which consisted of coleslaw, stewed tomatoes, blackeyed peas, green beans, mashed potatoes, gravy, biscuits and cornbread, barbecue and fried chicken. Everything was superbly seasoned and it was all you can eat. Drinks and desserts can be had for an extra charge. After lunch you can walk it off climbing the very steep hills (the restaurant and shops are snuggled into the side of a mountain) and shopping the cute shops along the way to your car. Michie Tavern provides excellent food and service in this one of a kind historic property located 1/4 mile from Monticello. The fried and baked chickens are their specialty and may be the best in Charlottesville. The seasonal side dishes are also very good. It’s a buffet, so come hungry and eat all you can.The atmosphere and dining rooms give an authentic eighteenth century feel to the experience and there is a tavern upstairs.
