Went to Portal Museum for my birthday and it was a good time!!! Being from LA of course the immersive museums are top notch but this was good and can definitely be in the running to be top notch. The best time to go is when they open. The earlier the better to beat the crowd. We scheduled our visit for 10:30 and there was only two other people there which allowed us ample time to take all the photos we wanted and enjoy our time. The person at the desk was helpful and informative.I look forward to going back to see what they have in store at their new location and most definitely recommend people go experience Portal.

It was cute.. not as artsy as I thought it was going but a great place to get some good pictures. It only had one floor open.. maybe if it was more floors I would feel like it would be more artsy. It was still super cool and colorful.

Came here with the bestie this weekend and didnt know what to expect but if modeling is your thing, this is for YOU! I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was cute and fun. I never realized how it is to simply POSE and come up with different ones. But I think we got some cute ones. Lol. Staff friendly, atmosphere positive, location great. Nice spot to add to a day of adventures.

Was allowed to purchase tickets for a certain time slot and was not informed beforehand that the hours would be changing. Not exactly the way I would’ve liked to spend my time in Charlotte. My friends and I were all looking forward to it and became disappointed once we arrived and realized the door was locked.

After seeing so many pictures on Instagram, we decided we needed to check out Portal to see what it was like. The entrance is pretty clear on Tryon, theres a sign pointing you around the corner and down a brightly colored staircase. We got our tickets online ahead of time, so they were scanned, we were given some info, and we were free to explore.Theres about 10 different rooms that you can explore at your own pace. Theres no order to them, so you can go wherever you like. This is nice if someone is already in one of the rooms. Each room is really designed to be Instagram friendly and interactive. My favorites were the sideways room and one with a fake hole that was really just paint.I thought it was really well done. Its not big and only took us 45 minutes or so to explore.I believe theyll be rotating the rooms, so Id be interesting in coming back when they do.

This was BETTER than I expected! We spent over 2 hours here, admiring the artwork and taking some dope shots. Each room is awesome. Fun for the entire family. The people working at the front desk were super helpful with photo suggestions. I hope this art experience will be around for a while! Looking forward to going back!

Not sure why this place is listed as a museum... it’s literally the tiniest space with small rooms just for taking Instagram pictures. It takes about 15 minutes to walk through with about 30 people crowded just waiting in lines to take pictures as well as using one tiny restroom. It is $17 a person which is outrageous for the area and what you see when you’re inside. Almost everyone inside that i spoke to was disappointed about the cost, what was advertised, and what was actually inside of the location. Another complaint was how long people had to wait just to take a picture or try to walk around because there are so many people. If your a person who’s into snapping pictures for social media then this may be the place for you... if you’re looking for an actual museum do NOT waste your $ here go to an actual art museum. Aside from wasting your money the restroom is disgusting with no soap or paper towel. Stuffed animals were all over the restroom along with an out dated fire extinguisher in one of the room. Please just save your $ and go elsewhere.

This is an interactive museum where you make the art come alive. It is a one floor art gallery where each room has its own artistic perspective based on the artist viewpoint. There was little to no wait since it was during a weekday. Once you pay the fee, you are allowed to roam about the premise and engage with the art. They even provide WiFi so you can tag and share with your friends and family.

Nice little place. Fun for messing around with friends or family taking unique pictures. The lighting is very bad, so its not a good place for trying to get professional shots unless you bring your own lighting or Photoshop like crazy. But still a cool place to check out.

This place was not worth my money. It is good for taking a few pictures. Please do not go to uptown and pay for parking and then pay just to get into this place. It is a waste of money. everyone that I had spoken with about this also agreed that the price was way too high. Definitely a waste of money for me. if the price was $10-$12 i would reconsider my review.

I wasnt really into it at first, but I have to say, Portal is pretty fun. There are ten or so rooms, each with their own theme and photo opp. I only wish there were a few more rooms. Pro tip: order tickets in advance online.

The staff is great, very friendly. If you have any questions definitely ask. Super cool place for all the photogenic people who love to take cool pictures for the gram. Very fun and you definitely can be creative with the different rooms. I only thing I would say is that some of the lighting in a couple of rooms can be quite difficult, but I’ll say bring a additional mobile light. But overall definitely dope place .

This place just didn’t do it for me. I walked through the whole thing within about10 min. I see what they did and it fell flat for me. Not worth the money. Others may love it though so I wouldn’t say don’t go. I just know I will not go again. Friendly staff though

It wasnt bad, just be prepared for it to be a lot smaller than anticipated. Paid $40 for two adults and we walked through the entire venue within 15 minutes. Great for snapping a few quick pics, a few giggles, and getting ready for the next stop on a list of adventures

This was our first time visiting here and we had an AMAZING time! The staff was super friendly from the time we came in until the end of our tour. They even offer to help you capture the right angles! You can take your time in each room and there is an exhibit for everyone to enjoy. We will def be back in three months when the next batch of artist get to showcase their work!

My wife and I came while visiting Charlotte and were super excited to try this out. We had high expectations, and honestly this fell a bit flat. The staff was nice and the concept is neat, but the artwork just didnt really do it for me. We struggled to find ways to spend our time, and only stayed about 30 minutes. I know art is interpreted differently for everyone, but this didnt seem worth the hype (many time slots sold out online) or the cost ($20 per person). I wish them well but couldnt see going back or recommending to friends.

Portal was a super cool place. I loved the variety of rooms. Upon requesting my time, I was confused what the time slots were and assumed that myself and those I brought with me would only have an hour to view the space. I was also concerned that the museum would be full of people. Well, we stayed as long as we wanted and to my knowledge there isnt a limited amount of time to frequent the space. Also, while we were there, other couples and groups came but it didnt cause friction while we carelessly took pictures in each room. The environment comfortable. Neesha (I believe is her name), who was at the front assisted us kindly. She was also able to grant me my choice of a refund or raincheck for my nephew who didnt show up. Both hosts were ready and willing to snap photos if we asked and they tell you this when you arrive. Also, fret not if your phone is dying. There is a charging port at the front for your picture snapping needs. We stayed from 6 til almost 8. We had a group of kids so you may not stay that long. They were also sensitive to the activity (constant questions and some hyper activity) of my 6 year old. I wouldnt suggest you bring multiple children under 6. But having a space where it is a choice to have a child come is a major plus bc moms need out times to and sometimes we dont have sitters. Great Job Portal CLT. They informed me they change the rooms every 3 months. I cant wait for October to get here.

I honestly dont like leaving bad reviews (especially for seemingly small venues/businesses) , so take my words with a grain of salt. That being said, this spot simply isnt worth it.It costs around 20 bucks per person to see about 6 art exhibits (which will take you around 10-15 minutes to fully explore, appreciate, take pictures, etc,.).The problem is the price is simply not worth what you get in my opinion. Most of the artwork there is just typical hipster stuff, nothing really ground-breaking. In fact Id say that the exhibits that are supposed to look like a persons room so to speak, look like the set of some cheesy Teen drama movie or T.V. show. When I couldnt help but ask myself Why is this considered worthy enough to put on display? and I couldnt think of any reason why. Its just boring hipster fluff. The one interesting exhibit in there was the one with the golden ballpit and vault and that was only mostly out of ironic enjoyment. Its by far the cheesiest part of the exhibit and it stands out more for its novelty then for actually being good on its own merits.I understand its hard for artists to make money. But honestly I regret ever spending money here. $40 for two people (me and a friend) when that money could have been spent going to a movie, buying a video game, and a variety of other activities that would cost far less and be more enjoyable (and likely have more artistic worth to it).The art here is simply not good and honestly I think making a bunch of art pieces so that people can pose for sub-par instagram pictures really highlights one of the problems I have with Hipster Art. There isnt any substance nor is there any noticeable signs of skill or interesting perspective put into the work they made. You can find better artwork browsing through Deviant Art then you could ever find here. Save your money and donate it to one of those internet artists instead. Unless youre just looking for another excuse to plaster your face on Instagram and you dont really care about art that has quality, substance, or keeps you interested for more then a quick glance and dont mind shelling out $20 bucks. If so, go ahead and give them money.Me personally, not planning on coming back here again. This place is pretentious at best and cynically bland at worse.
