I liked the fact that Carolina Polo and Carriage Co. gave a Navy Veteran an opportunity to discuss Charleston and the love of the City that he has. Our guide explained the Mask policy requirement in the City of Charleston Recognized all the Veterans, 1st Responders, Medical Field workers and teachers. Found some useful history I was unaware of like headstones being removed but not graves from a parking garage and how he incorporated humor and always opened for questions. Explained the Lottery, the GPS button and things for us to view after our tour to enjoy the city even more. If you have eldery guests or people unable to walk long distance great option to enjoy the beauty of the city and learn some fun historical facts. Will recommend tour for sure.

John was a great guide that mixed in humor with his knowledge and love of Charleston history. He kept us laughing and engaged the whole time, and that included our 3 year-old! He was even selfless enough to give us some of his own water on a hot day. From start to finish it was Southern hospitality all the way and we really enjoyed the personal anecdotes mixed in with the presentation that gave us a great sense of John’s pride in his hometown. I can’t recommend John or Carolina Polo and Carriage Co. highly enough.

My husband and I were quick to take a carriage tour as we have had a wonderful experience in the past. However this time was a huge disappointment. The horse was seemed slow and tired, which is fine if the driver and guide hadn’t been the same. He spoke seemingly only for the people in the front row and shared very little information as we leisurely rode past the beautiful homes. This seemed like a very expensive 45 minutes. My favorite part was sitting down after a long day of walking, but I left feeling like they owed us a second chance.

Our carriage tour was excellent! My wife and I have been on several tours over the years but this one was the best by far. Our carriage driver Evans Byrd was very knowledgeable of the Charleston history and added humor to the tour. He added extra tidbits that only a multigenerational native would know. We will be requesting Evans when we take another carriage tour.

We got a great deal on Groupon to do this tour. I think we had some inconsiderate people on our tour and it was near the end of the day (4pm). The guide didn’t really get to tell us any history except what people asked. Every time he started to say something someone interrupted so it’s hard to fault him for that. I think if guides set down some rules at the start we would’ve gotten a good lesson-one guy was talking on his cell phone and one couple kept asking the most random questions. It was like just a carriage ride with weird people.

Honestly, we didnt see most of the main highlights of the city like the battery or rainbow row. Nor could I hear him sitting in the back even after asking him to speak up. Lastly, he really didnt mention general points about Charleston such as how it was established, main historical facts, etc. It was NOT worth the price. Just rent a bicycle and ride around instead of booking this carriage tour.

Review №29

This was the WORST tour we’ve ever been on. The carriage itself was in terrible condition and we were worried about our safety. They used shower curtains connected to PVC pipes as makeshift barriers between rows (other companies had installed plexiglass.) We were in the back row & couldn’t hear anything the guide said. Even after letting him know he didn’t attempt to project his voice any louder. To top that off, he didn’t take us past any of the major sites. We’ve previously gone on the carriage tours with other companies here in Charleston and we were able to see much more! I’m giving this a one star because it will not let me give any less.

Great tour! Our guide Justin was very knowledgeable and entertaining, and we were so happy to see and hear about how they take care of their horses. Amigo, our horse, was so sweet! He was excited and really wanted to take off running, but Justin kept reminding him to walk using the Alaskan dog musher signals they teach the horses. We learned so many fun facts about Charleston and were able to pick other spots we wanted to visit after our tour. We did learn that the 9:30 tour is usually reserved for a private group from somewhere else; so even though we got there right when they opened at 9 and were the first in line, the first available tour was at 10. We had to walk just across a parking lot to actually load, along with the carriages from other tour companies. Overall, it was a great experience and a fun way to see Historic Charleston.

We took a Polo Carriage because it was the next in line. Dave was our guide, and Riley was the horse, an impressive animal on all accounts. We were the last ride of the day, and Dave took a bit more time, but Riley knew that the end of his work day was near and hurried home afterwards. There are 5 different routes, and they are specified by the city official in charge of monitoring the business. We had a downtown historic area which was fascinating and made better by Daves informative narration and commentary. The carriage was comfortable, and its height helped us to see over a wall or two and into windows of homes and buildings, It was a delightful way to spend an hour or so, and the clip-clop of Rileys was pleasant to the ear and almost soothing. The tour is reasonably priced, the horses seem well cared for (next time well bring an apple or carrot for Riley), and if youve enjoyed the time, we suggest a good tip for the driver/guide.

Our driver was still pretty good, very knowledgeable about the history and gave a great tour. The horse was extremely sweaty, and the carriage was clearly old. Im not saying this was a bad experience, but looking around at the other horses and well maintained carriages loading around the same area, this was a lower end tour.

I have been on several horse tours in other historical cities they are a must do for us. We were so excited about our first time in Charleston and taking in this wonderful historical city we have heard so much about via a carriage tour. We were very disappointed unfortunately. Our guy was very hard to understand (mumbled and was fast) he gave random personal facts and not much city history. He was trying to be jokey but the jokes were not funny and he made several jabs at people ( and where they were from) during the tour. He spat on the people in the first row during the tour (unfortunately that was my husband and I). The office was not friendly and was very matter of fact with not a lot of eye contact when we showed up we seemed more of an inconvenience than a valued customer. Upon return the tour guided asked for assistance for a steps and the people on the ground refused to help him and then once he did get someones attention of someone who was leaving ( she had her back pack on) she rolled her eyes and was CLEARLY gravely annoyed with the guide. There also was people yelling from the stables to our tour guide for parking in the wrong spot or something and it was rude and made customers feel uncomfortable. It was VERY unprofessional for co workers to speak with each other like that in front of customers, and a big disappointment. I will be back to Charleston and take another Carriage tour but unfortunately probably not with this company.

We enjoyed our tour! I wish I remembered our drivers name but she was super sweet. She told us about our horse (Picasso) and how they are taken care of. The companies are very highly regulated in their care of the animals. These animals love their jobs and are in shape. It was 89° the day we rode and the horses weren’t even hardly sweating. Their temperature is taken after every ride and they don’t let the horses continue working if their temp is too high. There’s a small stable type area where they rest and get sprayed off after working and they don’t work more than 4 hours a day, or if the temperature is over 95° outside. They are then trailered to their stable every night at an offsite location and they get a 4 week break on pasture every few months! I mention all of this because I was very interested in their well-being and they are well cared for.We had to sign in at their little office and then had a maybe two minute walk to wait on our carriage. We only had to wait about 15 min. Our actual tour was very nice and our guide was doing this as her job in college and she was very knowledgeable and kind! Highly recommend this company.

The only downside to this tour was that we had to walk one small block to reach the carriage ride from where the actual post was. The walk took less than 2 minutes. Not bad at all right? Ryan was our guide and he was phenomenal!! The history and information rolled off of his tongue like his favorite song, he was just that good. They along with other carriages use a random bingo system to decide the route they will take. Ryans favorite routes are 1 and 2 so if you get these, you are in for a treat. The staff was courteous and extremely helpful all the way around. He even gave us some background about Chico (the horse). Please be mindful that this tour covers SOUTHERN HISTORY, which is not American, Black, or ALL INCLUSIVE HISTORY. Southern history is and will always be one sided

Bought a groupon the day before and had no trouble getting right on to a a carriage tour (10 minute wait) after just showing up. Both this company and the city seem to have a well run system for numerous carriage groups to co- exist and thrive. Our guide Jeff was great (he’s a high school social studies teacher). With a dry sense of humor, he was both a wealth of knowledge and comedic. His love for Charleston was obvious and relationship with his tour horse, Amigo made us feel like we were in good hands. He loaded the carriage without concern for the line that we had formed. We were at the front of the line. He gave the last 3 seats to people who walked up at the last minute and told us to catch the next carriage which would arrive 30 minutes later, he said. No apology. So much for Southern hospitality!
