Stellar house that shows classy history. Great location with an ocean view. Tour was 25 minutes for $12. The only reason I didnt give 5 stars is that this place does not allow photography in the house. Other historic homes encourage pictures.

Ive dreamed of staying on the Battery. This is the perfect place. Julie took such good care of us. The breakfast was great and gluten-free friendly upon request. The house and quarters have so much history. The quarters are spotless. The beds are cozy. Its fun, imagining what it was like living in old Charleston years ago. Such a pleasant experience!

My husband and I took this tour on a whim and I’m so glad we did. The lady who showed us around was great at explaining the history of the house; from the past occupants, portraits, and even the dining table; she was very knowledgeable. She didn’t rush us, and answered our questions thoroughly. The tour lasted about a half hour. In the summer months, you can purchase tickets to have a couple glasses of wine and cheeses on the balcony. If I ever come back, I will be sure to do that. This was a must see.

Very beautiful. Wife dragged me to this but, I turned out loving it. Historical and as an older individual with health problems, even though they cant modify the property to be handicapped compliant (because of its historical status) they placed a folding chair on each level for me if I needed it.

As a local professional photographer, I have the privilege of visiting some amazing venues in Charleston. This is easily one of my favorite of the old historic homes! The tour guides do a fantastic job of bringing the history to life!!!

The house has a great story but its a 20 min tour of 4 rooms for $36 (family of 4). Im not hurting for cash so it is what it is but I had higher expectations.

Knowledgeable docents and a beautiful house with lots of antiques to gawk at. I have learned more from house guides in historic cities than I ever did in history classes.

Beautiful old house with charming tour

The house was beautiful, truly, but to echo a few other reviews, it was uncomfortable to say the least and turned my partner of many years off from the experience. In short the way the tour treated slave history is woefully inadequate and harmful. Not only did the tour guide romanticize the experience of slaves and their lives, but she seemed tone deaf to the group and chose to add inappropriate political opinions in to the tour. It is unfortunate, as the house is truly beautiful with rich history, but there are too many other great areas to visit in the Charleston area that do a better job of painting an accurate picture of the antebellum period of the south and beyond.

The tour guide, as others have said, seemed to romanticize the history of the house in a way that totally disregarded the experiences of slaves. She talked about how the homeowners at the time kept diaries on their slaves because they were passionate record keepers, which a vast understatement of the true intention. At one point, she started talking about politics which basically excluded myself and others in the group that didnt feel the same way as her. The house is beautiful, the tour was not.

This is my first 1 star review, and as a rule of thumb unless it’s 5 stars I won’t write a review, but I think it is important. This is a historical site and as such the whole story should be told. Not only did the tour fail to engage its visitors in the history of slavery, they almost seemed to romanticize it. I urge the foundation to update their tour to reflect the reality of the times and become more cognizant of slave owners place in US history.

This was a great tour for a rainy day, and a quintessential house tour of Charleston. The house itself is beautiful and the women who staff the front lobby and tours are friendly. Youll be treated to all sorts of information on the family, particularly the Alston family that still owns the property (a current descendant still inhabits the top floor of the building) and their role in the evolution of Charleston. Note that photos are not allowed inside the building. For this part of the tour, I give four stars. However, there were a few comments made by our tour guide about the Civil War insinuating that it would be better referred to by other terms (she suggested common alternatives such as The War of Northern Aggression and others) which added nothing to the tour but to politicize it in a way that left only a sour taste in my mouth for her, the tour, and the foundation that runs the property.

Once more into the breach....... of course we can be a few days off and have had some time in the middle class for some of these reasons I dont have time in the last year and have had a bundle extra time in this country and it is in a row of players and a new team and a great team and I think we can get the ball out there and we have no bags and we would like you as much to get to work on a bundle of wsj in this series that is going through this season and it is in a way out to get to know him in this country to get to work and to do with it or he would be able for a little bit more than likely the best player for your loose player for the same as a player and the families that have to go out there now are not in a row to do with his life in your head or in the last couple weeks or two or four months and you can be here around here in a way out to the drop and the families that are here in about five years are the ones in charge and are not in their lives or their children in the middle class or at the time they were in their own children 8or

One of my favorite hone tours in charming Charleston! Situated at a prime spot on The Battery in downtown this home has stood the test of time and mother nature. Knowledable tour guides take you through each room sharing detailed information and stories about the families that occupied the home. Its one of the more affordable home tours in downtown which is a definite plus!

Highly recommend adding the Edmondson-Alston house to your tour of historic Charleston. We bought the package of Middleton Place plantation and the house tour for both Middleton Place and the Edmondson-Alston house, and I highly recommend this deal. Seeing this house after Middleton Place was truly the best way to do the tours. I found that it was so much fun to see the continuation of the Middleton family line and I remembered a lot of the names from the Middleton house tour. A beautiful (and air conditioned) addition to our sampling of history.

An excellent house tour. Just the right length, with enough detail to interest even teens and tweens. A descendant of the second owner still lives in the house which features many original family furnishings - this makes it extra special.

This is a nice home with a lot of historical value to the area. The guide was very informative. I was a little disappointed in the actual size of the home as many areas were converted to other use. As far as furnishings it was top notch.

Very nice tour, but in all honesty it was way too stuffy of an environment for me. I wouldnt go back. Wasnt any fun, but thats just my opinion.

Nice tour of the house and family history of the Edmondston and Ashton families. Is a great compliment to the Middleston Place. Loved the views of the battery from the balcony. Choose the house tour only or buy a combination ticket and go see the Middleton Plantation too!

Much of the furnishings are original and the house had been in the same family since the second owner who bought it a few years was built.

It was worth going thru the home. Our tour guide didnt give us time to look at any of the displays. She kept moving us on. Even one telling my wife and two others they had to keep up.

The view of Fort Sumter from the balcony where General P. G. T. Beauregard stood during the bombardment is poignant and haunting.

Nice to visit and learn about the history of the family. Visits only allowed with the tour and no pictures inside.

Charming old house. Since Charleston has become so popular these houses have lost some of the personal touches that use to be prevalent.

A beautiful look into the past, led by kind and knowledgeable guides

The tour guide was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable, but I could have gone without seeing it. The cost to get in was kinda steep, and the tour is about 30 min. Does the house have cool history? Yes, but this house is not something you cant visit Charleston without seeing.

The house was gorgeous and the antiques in each room were stunning. Loved the library! Nancy did a great tour and all of the staff were so friendly.

Wonderful home and truly fabulous location on the Battery! Greatly enjoyed being able to sit on a piazza and feel the breeze just as those who lived in the house long ago did. We were able to view an unheard of number of family heirlooms just as they were used in the home.

Had a great spur of the moment leisure tour. Loved looking at the artichetiure and furnishings, as well as hearing about the history of these families and the history that has passed through this house. Nancy was very knowledgeable about the house and fun.

We discovered this wonderful house tour during the January Museum mile. (Check out this annual event which is a great value for both locals and tourists). Ed-Al is one my favorite house tours offering fascinating historical insights with knowledgeable guides.

When in Charleston SC, you have to visit this place for the tour and the history. So much history and this is one of the only places where the furniture and fixtures are almost all original! Adults are $17 each and all monies go to the preservation of the house! I think children under 12 are $12.

We took this house tour which overlooks the bay while in Charleston. Our guide, Arlena, was an avid historian and we totally enjoyed her enthusiasm and humor. The history of the home, the families and its role in the war was amazing.

The tour guide was so informative, took her time to explain the details, history, stories behind the house. The house itself doesn’t really have that much inside but it still have all the furniture. We didn’t get to see the bedrooms and where their workers were but I think it was a good deal given the $12 price and 35-40 mins spent touring.

This is a beautiful home along Charlestons battery. The tour for the home feels limited, as the much of the home is blocked off because it is still being resided in. The rooms that you do get to see on the tour are filled with incredible antiques and history. When youre in the library on the second floor you get to see an incredible view out over the water, which is almost worth the entire tour price on its own. Would recommend if youve got time for a short tour before lunch.

Cool house by the beach with lots of history. It was fun to learn about the joggling board. No pics indoors and parking is tough.

Worth the visit!

Wonderful historic house museum on the harbor, high battery. Family antique pieces, historic documents, and has been in the family since 1838. It feels like a home rather than an old stuffy house museum.

An interesting house tour. Im still wondering if it was worth the price, but my children (ranged 11-5) actually really enjoyed even though I cant quite figure out why. Anyway it was a good perspective on historic Charleston and had some interesting items from the early 19th century.

Unbelievable preservation of a noteable family in the history of Charleston. Period furniture and paintings give a glimpse of the wealthy life long ago.

I have traveled to every State in the U.S, and 64 countries outside the U.S. Ive done a lot of house tours and this one was rather boring. What should have been a 20 minute tour lasted 35 minutes and was, to a large degree, wasted time.
